Mustangs Over Southwood Cowboys 9 to 0

Last year Caddo Magnet produced 107 goals in 26 regular season matches. Coming into this year some were concerned that the loss of last year’s scoring leader Eric Johnson to graduation would create a void in the Mustang attack. But Coach Radi and his Mustangs have done just fine this year. With tonight’s 9 to 0 win over Southwood the team has 108 goals, surpassing last year’s production in only its 23rd game.

Tonight’s game featured a balanced attack from multiple lineups throughout the evening with scores coming from eight different players. Dorian Long (assist from Nick Flowers) got things going in the 7th minute of the contest with a short drive from the top of the 6-yard box. This was followed ten minutes later by the season’s first Spencer-Spencer connection as Spencer Johnson launched a 30+ yarder into the net following a long Spencer Inman pass from the backline – your basic 50+ yard two-touch transition play. In the 21st minute Alex Blandin hit one in from the top of the penalty box. Shortly after the Mustangs were rewarded a free kick. Zach Kelly bumped the ball over to Steven Bush who blasted it in from about 25 yards. At the 30-minute mark outside midfielder Bush sent a beautiful long cross into the top of the 6-yard box where Victor Leuck went high to put a header into the corner of the goal. A few minutes later Kelly found his range from 30+ yards out and rocketed one into the ol’ onion bag. (To avoid plagiarism ESPN’s Tommy Smyth is credited for that metaphor.) The first half came to a close with the Mustangs leading 6 to 0. The second half was more or less a clinic on passing with the entire roster continuing to see action. There were three more scores with goals coming from Jimmy Cowles (assist from Inman), Alex Payne (assist from Johnson), and Long getting his second of the night. Final score was 9 to 0. There is one remaining game on the regular season schedule against Captain Shreve on Thursday Jan 24. This game will determine the district winner while the loser will be the runner-up. Both teams will be going to the play-offs. The opponent and date for the first play-off game has yet to be determined, but according to LHSAA rules the game must be completed on or before February 2nd.
