Caddo Magnet Shuts Out Lafayette High

Lafayette High’s Mighty Lions opened this contest with lots of ball movement and early attacks as the Mustang offense patiently tried to find its passing game while the defense kept the opponent at bay. The high crown of the narrow Tioga football field seemed to be more of a problem for Caddo Magnet than Lafayette in the early going. Midway through the first half the Mustangs had yet to take a shot while Lafayette had created multiple chances with several early shots sailing over the crossbar and a couple of deep crosses being intercepted by the Mustang back line. Lafayette began to resort to more long balls over the back line, but keeper Chris Hilario was scooping up everything before plays could be made. Meanwhile Caddo Magnet was beginning to find its rhythm, and in the 24th minute finally took its first but unsuccessful shot-on-goal. Shortly after midfielder Zach Kelly sent a nice pass to outside mid Steven Bush on a breakaway, but the play was whistled offsides. In the 35th minute forward Adam West was close on a shot from 35 yards out that bounced over a diving keeper but barely missed the net. By now it was apparent that the Mustangs had found their rhythm and were taking control of this match. In the 37th minute midfielder Nick Flowers sent a high ball into the middle of the penalty box. West took possession in a crowd and shuttled the ball over to outside mid Jimmy Cowles who quickly sent it to the back of the net. The Mustangs were finally on the board and went into halftime with the 1 to 0 advantage.

Caddo Magnet came out energized for the second half with more speed and deliberate ball movement. Three minutes into the second half Luke Snow sent in a long free kick to just above the left side of the 6-yard box. Bush went high for the header and sent it beyond the keeper’s reach into the far post. Lafayette tried to pick up their game at this point and did create several opportunities around the Mustang net but no score. In the 49th minute West got loose on a breakaway down the middle. After waiting for the keeper to committ he quickly passed to Dorian Long on his left who finished from the top of the 6-yd box. At that point Coach Radi began to sit many of his starters. In the 56th minute Jack Waterman, following a pass from West, broke loose on the left side and dropped a beautiful looping chip into the net at full pace as the keeper came out to defend – a very nice shot. The Mustangs got another score off a set piece in the 72nd minute.  Flowers lined up a 20-yard direct free kick and charged the ball. But as he raced past the ball Kelly flew in from a different angle and blistered it just under the crossbar beyond the out-stretched reach of the keeper. Flowers closed out the scoring in the 76th minute with a nice left-footed line drive from just right of center of the 18-yard line. Final score – 6 to 0. Caddo Magnet got their scores from nine shots-on-goal while holding Lafayette scoreless on a couple of shots-on-goal. Play was fairly aggressive throughout but well-policed. Each side drew one yellow card for aggressive play. The Mighty Lions showed promise early and put forth a commendable effort throughout the match keeping Hilario busy all afternoon, but the Mustang defense gave them very few decent looks at the net.  Hilario recorded his 13th clean sheet in 20 chances this season.  The Mustangs' nineteen wins against one loss is tops in Louisiana high school soccer, and the team currently occupies the #1 position in the state poll.  The Mustangs next play Airline on Monday Jan 14.
