Caddo Magnet Beats District Rival Byrd

For the first time in school history the Caddo Magnet Mustangs took the field as the number one team in the state. In it’s first match of 2008 the Mustangs faced co-district leader Byrd’s Yellow Jackets amid large student and parent turnouts for both sides.

The game got underway with both sides moving the ball well with Byrd creating the early opportunities. In the second minute Byrd’s Jeff Penner broke down the middle but was chased down from behind by Robert Poole who managed to kick the ball away at the last second. They would create another chance a couple of minutes later but were again stopped before any damage could be done. The Mustangs were also sharp with their passes and distribution from the outset, but not until the 16th minute did Magnet finally get it’s first good look at the goal but no score. However, in the 26th minute defender Spencer Inman sent in a long curving shot from near the right sideline that the keeper could only manage to deflect into the crossbar, and after bouncing back into the field of play it was quickly sent into the net by forward Dorian Long. Three minutes later Jimmy Cowles took a short shuttle pass from Long (initial pass from Zach Kelly) in a crowd and sent another one in from the middle of the 18-yard area. The never-give-up Jackets created a couple more chances, but there was no further scoring into the half with Magnet leading 2 to 0.

The second half opened with continued nice play from both sides, but it appeared that the Mustangs were in control of the match and never in danger. About midway through the half the Mustangs began to rest some starters. Not until towards the end of the match were the Jackets able to put in their only goal with a shot from about fifteen yards out. Magnet finished the night with nine shots-on-goal while Byrd finished with three. The game was played cleanly throughout with little intervention from the officials. Free kicks were evenly distributed between the teams with about four apiece. Caddo Magnet had several opportunities with corner kicks but were unsuccessful on all. Final score - 2 to 1. With the win the Mustangs are tied with Captain Shreve for the district lead with one loss each while Byrd drops to third with two district losses. With games still remaining between Byrd and Shreve and Magnet and Shreve all three are still in the hunt. Overall, Caddo Magnet wins its 18th game against only one loss – tops in the state. This weekend the team travels to Alexandria for a friendly with Lafayette High, the team that knocked the Mustangs out of the playoffs last year.
