Caddo Magnet Goes Down to Captain Shreve
Captain Shreve shut down Caddo Magnet’s high octane attack tonight with disruptive play, eking out just enough offense to make it count. This game had all the atmosphere of a playoff match from the onset - big turnouts by the student body for each side, many local alumni, parents sitting in for past graduates away at college, balloons, face paint, fight songs, you name it. Magnet came out of the gate fast and furious and had opportunities early on - more than Shreve - but the shots were generally not even close to the net. The Mustangs appeared to settle down towards the end of the first half and had most of the Magnet faithful confident that it would just be a matter of time, but by halftime the match was still scoreless. Early in the second half Shreve’s freshman Connor Randel took a long pass and slipped through a couple of defenders to get a rare look at the net, and suddenly Shreve was in the driver’s seat. With nice build-ups in the second half the Mustangs appeared to be on the brink of knotting the score several times, but the Shreve crew through sheer hustle hung on to notch their biggest victory of the season – a victory that they desperately needed to stay in this district race. With the results there is now a three-way tie for first place in district among these two teams and Byrd, with all getting another shot at one another before it’s all settled. Final score 0 – 1 and Magnet’s first loss in ten tries. There were a couple of cards in the second half for rough play and one ejection near the conclusion on the Mustang side for shirt-pulling.
