Caddo Magnet Wins Season Opener

The Mustangs opened district play with a 3 to 0 shutout over Byrd’s Yellow Jackets. Magnet came out of the gate intent on scoring early and did create several opportunities, but adrenalin was running high for the Mustangs in this first game of the season and shots were sailing over the crossbar. After that early flurry both teams settled into a back-and-forth battle with Magnet continuing to hold the edge in chances but unable to finish. In the final two minutes of the half midfielder Ethan Colbert picked the ball out of a crowded area thirty yards out and launched a rocket into the net before a surprised Byrd keeper could react. The early second half saw an almost duplicate shot from the same area – this one from midfielder Zach Kelly - for a 2 to 0 lead. Less than ten minutes later Jordan Mitchell sent a short through pass into Jordan Abdehou at full pace who then slipped it in from the top of the 6-yard box. Byrd’s best chance of the night came three minutes later on the opposite end as the ball bounced around in the box before Magnet keeper Chris Hilario was able to wrap it up. The remainder of the game saw spirited play from both sides, but other than an unsuccessful penalty kick by the Mustangs few legitimate scoring chances. Though the Mustangs out-shot the Jackets by a good margin both teams were even with actual shots-on-goals at three apiece, but Byrd was unable to put enough zip on their shots to get past Hilario while Magnet was perfect on theirs. Caddo Magnet also held the edge in corner and direct kicks. Next for Caddo Magnet will be another district match on Monday Nov 26 against Airline before heading south at the end of the month for a tournament in Sulphur.

The Mustangs lost two starters to graduation last year but feature an All-Stater, an All-City, and six All-District selections among nine returning starters from last year's district champions.  Expectations run high as usual for the Mustangs as they make the LaPrep pre-season Top-10 poll in fifth position.
