Mustangs Stampede Cowboys
The Magnet Mustangs defeat Southwood’s Cowboys 9 to 0 on a cold and sunless Saturday at Shreveport’s w-Indy Bowl. Weather.com’s mid-forties forecast felt like the teens with the swirling winds inside the stadium. On the field the Mustangs again dominated a weaker district opponent. The Mustangs started early as Eric Johnson got the first component of his hattrick in the second minute of the contest with a strong left-footed rocket from about 20 yards off a Nick Flowers pass. In the seventh minute Steven Bush worked his way deep into the left side and sent a cross into Johnson who one-touched in front of the goal for his second score. Bush repeated his pass two minutes later from the same spot, but this time his pass was inadvertently deflected into the net by a defender for an own goal. Bush would earn a goal in the 19th minute following a nicely-placed pass from Zach-the-assistant-Kelly. Johnson then got his third on a Robert Poole feed, and Jimmy Cowles completed the half on a 25-yard dart into the upper ninety from his left midfield position. Halftime score – 6 to 0. Opening the second half scoring was Zach Kelly on a nice looping shot from the top of the box. Five minutes later he collected his second score on a header off a long pass from left midfielder Akeem Williams. The scoring would wrap up in the 73rd minute with a long Ethan Colbert shot from the middle. Goalkeeper Chris Hilario was seldom challenged and earned his sixth district shutout in eight games.
