Mustangs Sweep Gators in District Series
How fitting that Caddo’s two senior co-captains scored all three goals in their Caddo-Shreve district swansong played out on the big stage at Shreveport’s Independence Stadium. This match-up is always something special for players and fans as indicated by the large crowd and many alumni home on college break. The Magnet JV team provided the perfect build-up with their win over the Shreve JV in the prior game.

The Mustangs picked up where they left off after their inspiring St. Paul Holiday Tournament. With intense midfield play and brick wall defense they had Shreve’s Gators struggling throughout the night. Though they had chances Shreve’s potent scoring duo of Ryan Watson and Brennan Randel never got the space they needed to finish as Magnet recorded their second district shutout against the state’s #9 Gators. Forward Eric Johnson figured in all three goals with two scores of his own and an assist to defender Micah Goodwin. Magnet’s first goal came 18 minutes into the contest after several earlier attempts came close but did not happen. Midfielder Zach Kelly sent a short pass to Johnson in the left 35-yard area and he out-raced his defender to slam the ball home from close range. There would be a few other almost-scores before Micah Goodwin got the game’s second goal in the 20th minute of the second half. This one came off a corner kick set piece after the ball was played in short and sent to Johnson at the top. He then sent a beautiful one-touch into the middle of the box to Goodwin. After his quick spin-around and kick the ball was in the back of the net before the keeper could adjust. Shreve’s closest threat came in the second half on a long cross into the box, but Magnet keeper Chris Hilario was there to intercept the close-range header and maintain his shutout. With about five minutes remaining in the match Johnson got his second goal of the night and the team’s third. After a Shreve fullback attempted to send a ball upfield from deep in Gator territory Kelly intercepted and quickly found Johnson in the middle. Splitting two defenders at the 30-yard mark he was off to the races again.

With the 3 to 0 shutout the state’s #6 Mustangs picked up their 15th overall win and remained perfect in district play. Johnson's team-leading 20 goals and Kelly's team-leading 11 assists have all come during Magnet's tough tournament schedule and five match-ups against all the top district teams. Those are quality stats and tops in North Louisiana Division 1 soccer ! The Times had this article.
