Caddo Magnet Over Byrd 2 - 1
Caddo Magnet sneaked by a speedy and aggressive Byrd team tonight with a 2 to 1 win. The match started out slowly, but when Magnet was awarded a penalty kick in the 13th minute the game was on. Magnet’s Adam West was fouled in the box, but Byrd’s goalkeeper made a terrific stop on the ensuing kick and then quickly sent the ball down the middle of the field. The quick counter caught the Mustang defense by surprise and suddenly Magnet was down 1 to 0. Both teams picked it up a notch at that point but neither team was able to score. Byrd looked to be the more aggressive team during this period, winning most of the balls and effectively disrupting Magnet’s passing game with numerous steals. First half nod to Byrd.

The second half opened with Magnet on the attack, and within a minute they barely missed a score with a shot off the crossbar. The Mustangs had several early second-half possessions near and in the box, but not until the 19th minute of the half were they able to finally even the score. From the middle of the field defender Luke Snow sent a long pass to forward Eric Johnson at the top left side of the box. As Byrd’s keeper ran out to contest the shot Johnson was able to send a high looping ball over his head into the empty net. With twenty minutes remaining in the contest and their lead gone Byrd tried in vain to regain control of this game, but Magnet was in high gear by this point. Seven minutes after knotting the score Magnet went ahead with Zach Kelly’s eventual game-winner from above the top of the box. Ethan Colbert assisted on the play. Both sides threatened a few more times with Magnet bouncing another shot off the crossbar. Byrd had a couple of groaners as crosses passed untouched in front of the goal, but in the end neither team could manage another score. Final – 2 to 1.

As expected Byrd showed a lot of speed up top and is a legitimate district contender, but with a strong show of character in the second half the Mustangs proved their worth in tough games to take the early lead in the district race.
