Impact of Youth Sports on Parents’ Feelings and Behaviors

Last Spring, Mt. Airy Baseball parent Nancy Peter conducted a research project to explore parents' feelings and behaviors as they relate to organized youth sports. Using Mt. Airy Baseball as her case study, she used a mixed-methods research design including a literature review, an online parent survey, parent interviews, and game observations. Nancy completed her study and analyses last month, and the full report will hopefully be published over the coming year. In the meantime, the Executive Summary is posted here.

Please address all related questions and comments to Nancy Peter, at: npeter @ sp2.upenn.edu.

Picnic and Championship Games

Coaches, Parents, and Players:

Rainouts
Mt. Airy Baseball tries to keep parents informed through these email messages and the Website. However, the constant rain and rainouts have made this extremely difficult. PLEASE CONTINUE TO CHECK WITH YOUR COACHES REGARDING UPDATED GAME TIMES AND SCHEDULES.
Picnic
This is to remind you that the End of Season Picnic will be held tomorrow, June 20, 2008. There will clowns, balloon animals, face painting, games, and of course the Championship Games for each division. At the concession stand, kids can get a hamburger or hot dog and soda or chips, both for a $1.00.

It is our tradition that every player in T-Ball, AA and AAA child receives a trophy in recognition of their efforts to learn, improve, and show good sportsmanship. We no longer give trophies to all Majors or Senior players. because in past years few were interested in them.

T-Ball and AA trophies will be given out at 10:00, and AAA at 10:30
The T-Ball and AA Commissioners will introduce the coaches and the coaches will give out the trophies. The entire ceremony should take about 30 minutes. For this to happen, teams need to be assembled on time. Then it's off to the clowns for balloon animals.
Championship Games
The AA Championship Game will take place at 9:00. The Majors Championship Game will be held at 1:30 (note time change). Rain has postponed several AAA playoff games. At this point, the AAA semi-final games will take place on Saturday. Of course, the game schedule continues to be subject to changes based on the weather.

Teams in the Championship Games (AA, AAA and Majors) will receive first and second place trophies following their games.

Volunteers
We need lots of volunteers to keep make sure the food is ready to serve when the trophy ceremonies are done, and to keep the lines moving as quickly as possible. Please come to the concession stand on Saturday to help out. If you haven't helped out at the concession stand this year, this is your chance.

Coaches' Softball Game
In past years, the Coaches' Softball Game has been the highlight of the day, so we'll try it again this year. . . T-Ball and AAA versus AA, Majors and Seniors at 12:00. All coaches and assistant coaches are welcome.

Thank you all for your help with the picnic and everything you've done to make this a successful season for the kids.

League Commissioner

13/14 Tournament, Cheesecake prizes, Summer camp

13's/14's Tournament Tryouts

Coaches Haneef Hill (14's) and Andy Miller (13's) are hosting a 13/14 tournament team tryout Saturday, June 13, at noon. It will be held at Leeds Middle School, which is located at 1100 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue (the field is between Mt. Pleasant Ave. and Sedgwick St.). Please contact Coach Haneef for additional details or information: 215-279-2161 or foo981@aol.com.

Cheesecake Prizes

Anyone who sold 25 items in the annual fundraiser can pick up their personalized Mt. Airy bat bag at the Concession Stand this weekend. Congratulations to Demetrius Jackson who won the flat screen TV. The sale raised more than $5,000, all of which will be put back into the program for field improvements and player scholarships. If you did not participate in the sale and would like to make a contribution, please send your check to: Mt. Airy Baseball, 124 W. Gorgas Lane, Philadelphia, Pa. 19119. Thanks so much to all who did participate and for everyone's continued support.

Summer Camp

This is the last week to sign up for MAB Summer Camp. Forms are available at the Concession Stand - all it costs you is a stamp! Camp runs June 22-25, 9 AM-12 PM, and is free to all Mt. Airy Baseball players. High school coaches and players through the Richie Ashburn Foundation will conduct the camp.

More Alumni News

At least three Mt. Airy Baseball players were left of the recently mailed list of kids who played varsity baseball this year. Sam Mercuris and Marcello-Orsorio Soto played at GFS, and Elbert Upsey played for Bodine, bringing the count up to 31 varsity players. In addition to contributing heavily to the success of the League Championship Central High School Team, Mt. Airy Baseball also played a large role in the success of another high school program. Germantown Friends School won it's sixth consecutive Friends League Championship last week with a team comprised of mainly of Mt. Airy alums. Ten of the fifteen on the GFS roster were Mt. Airy Baseball players: Jesse Biddle, Marcelo Osorio-Soto, Justin Berg, Sam Mercuris, Dan Ceisler, Jay Query, Jason Symonette, Josh Goldenberg, Tyler Clauson-Wolf, and Reiss Clauson-Wolf. Among those planning to play college ball is Mt. Airy's Jesse Biddle. Jesse has verbally committed to the University of Oregon for 2010, turning down North Carolina, Arizona State and Oregon State, three of the top baseball schools in the country, to help Oregon build its program back up after a 28 year hiatus. Other former Mt. Airy players include All-Friends league player Ricky Moses, who will attend Spartansburg College in South Carolina, and All-Public outfielder Ian Lewis, who will play at Rutgers-Camden. Please send us your MAB alumni news for future emails! Dan Winterstein League Commissioner 215-552-8103 info@mtairybaseball.org

Majors Commissioner: safety for spectators

Subject: Spectators & Friends

I wanted to review an issue I have noticed from observations at several games this year regarding the presence of spectators (parents & friends) in the designated areas for players/coaches during games.

The open areas next to and around the dugouts should only be occupied by players, designated coaches/asst coaches and the scorekeeper for each team. In the interest of safety and to minimize distractions, parents are not permitted to watch the game next to or behind the backstop at either Pleasant or Mt. Airy. The areas immediately next to or behind the dugouts should also be kept clear to serve as an on-deck area for players to warm up for hitting or pitching as needed.

The dugout area is for players & coaches. Friends/relatives of players not participating in the game are not permitted to watch the game from the dugout.

I clearly realize that folks get caught up in the game action and instinctively want to 'coach' their children during the game. I believe that this can distract the players from focusing on your instructions during the game. I hope that the spectators will respect that this is your time to manage the players and limit their involvement to cheering/supporting their children/team enthusiastically from the stands. I will continue to police these boundaries as necessary at games where I am in attendance and would ask you to pass along this information to your parents. You can tell them that this request is from the Commissioner and will be enforced.

Regards,

Reynold Dyson, Majors Commissioner

Youth Sports Parent Survey

Mt. Airy Baseball Parents, Nancy Peter is a Mt. Airy Baseball (MAB) parent. She is also a researcher and doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania. Nancy is conducting a research study on parents' feelings and behaviors regarding organized youth team sports and Mt. Airy Baseball.

Nancy asks that you take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete this survey.

1. Participation is completely voluntary.

2. Participants' identities and answers will be kept strictly confidential.

3. Parents should complete one survey per child involved in MAB.

4. For research purposes, parents rather than guardians should complete the survey.

5. Participants may volunteer for individual interviews and/or request copies of the final report.

As a result of her study, Nancy hopes that researchers and program administers will better understand parents' feelings and behaviors. She also hopes that parents will reflect on their feelings and actions and, subsequently, find optimal ways to support their children.

To access the survey, cut and paste this URL into your browser: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=cn2ikcX0dGze_2btF1kH7rlw_3d_3d

Please complete this survey no later than Wednesday, May 6. Send questions or comments about the survey directly to Nancy at npeter@sp2.upenn.edu.

Thank you, in advance, for your time and interest.

Clean-Up Day; 10-Year-Old (May) Travel Team

Clean-Up Day
Thanks so much to everyone who helped with the annual Clean-up Day last Saturday. We accomplished a great deal. New infield mix was spread, the infield overgrowth was removed, the pitchers' mounds were rebuilt, the batting cage net was hung, the dugout roofs were installed, the fences were painted, the infields and outfield were re-seeded, the storage closets were cleaned out, the sand bags were filled, and bags and bags and BAGS of winter's assorted debris were taken to the curb.

If you were not able to participate, you will have a second chance. On Sunday March 29, from 1:00-4:00 PM, we will meet at the Pleasant Playground, at Chew Avenue and Pleasant Street, to clean up there. As many of you know, the Pleasant Playground field was renovated last year with a grant from Major League Baseball and the Player Association, and is home to many AAA and Majors games. We hope to see you at Pleasant Playground on the 29th.

Thanks again for making Mt. Airy Baseball a community effort. 10-Year-Old (May) Travel Team
There will be an open tryout for the 10-year-old MAB travel team that will go to Rehobeth Beach, Delaware, for a tournament at Sports at the Beach. To avoid the Easter conflict, the tryout date has been changed from Sunday, April 12 to Sunday, April 5 at 6 PM. The tryout will be conducted by Kenny Holdsman, MAB Tournament Team Coordinator, and the 10s coaching staff of Ray Heim, Jeff Istvan, and Jonathan Levy.

The eleven or twelve players who are selected for this team will play in a competitive regional tournament on May 2-3, 2009. Players will likely be back in time for their AAA games on Sunday afternoon. The team will stay overnight in a dormitory on May 2, with their teammates and coaches.  Parents are encouraged to attend but cannot stay in the team dormitory.  The car ride is about 2.5 hours long, so parents may either commute or stay in a local hotel. The cost of the tournament and lodging will be about $80/player, not including transportation and meals. There will be a team dinner on Saturday night with the MAB 13-year-old team, which is also competing in Delaware that weekend.
Eligible players cannot turn 11 prior to May 1, 2009. First-year AAA players who turn 10 after May 1, 2009 will not be eligible to participate on this team either. Those players who are selected for the May event will not automatically receive a spot on the 10s summer traveling team. There will be other tryouts in April and May, to select the 9-year-old, 10-year-old, and 11-year-old summer traveling teams. For more information, contact Kenny Holdsman at kenny.holdsman@gmail.com or 215.848.2408.

Mt. Airy Baseball 2009

Dear Parents and Players:

If you've registered for 2009 Mt. Airy Baseball (MAB), you will soon receive a letter in the mail, welcoming you to another year of MAB. If you have not registered, time is running out. Register today at www.mtairybaseball.org.
PLAYER ASSESSMENTS AND TEAM ASSIGNMENTS

1. T-Ball, AA and Senior League Players Ages 14-16 Need Not Attend Assessments

T-Ball and AA players who played last year will continue with the same team this year. New T-Ball (ages 5&6) and AA (ages 7&8) players will be assigned at random. A MAB coach will contact all T-Ball, AA and Senior League players about their respective team assignments.

2. AAA & Majors Player Assessments and Team Assignments

The AAA and Major League player assessments will be held on Saturday, March 7, at Mt. Airy Playground; specific times are listed below. The purpose of the assessments will be to balance the AAA and Majors teams with players of all skill levels and experiences. When players change divisions (move into AAA or Majors), they are reshuffled to balance the teams. AAA and Majors players therefore remain with the same team for two years.

This is not a tryout, as every child will be assigned to a team. However, all AAA and Major League players must attend, even if they are continuing on the same team and in the same division. The assessments will be organized like practice sessions. Players should plan on being at the field for about an hour, and they must come to the session for the league they are entering. Bring your gloves!

AAA and Majors Assessment Day Schedule
Saturday, March 7, 2009
Rain Date:  Saturday March 14, 2009
Mt. Airy Playground (Germantown Ave. & Sedgwick St.)

All Major League Players (Ages 11 & 12)
Players whose last names begin with the letters:
A-H: 10:00 AM
I-Q: 10:30 AM
R-Z: 11:00 AM

All AAA Players (Ages 9 & 10)
Players whose last names begin with the letters:
A-H: 1:30 PM
I-Q: 2:00 PM
R-Z: 2:30 PM

3. 13-year-old Player Assessments and Team Assignments

The 13-year-old assessments will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 28, at Mt. Airy Playground. This is not a tryout, as every child will be assigned to a team. The purpose of the assessments will be to match kids with the teams on which they will feel most successful.

There is a mandatory meeting for parents at 10:00 AM on February 28, to explain the 3 options for 13-year-olds. If you and your child cannot attend the February 28 activities, e-mail us at
info@mtairybaseball.com or call 215-552-8103, so we can make other arrangements.

For players who don't feel ready to move on to the regulation size field (90' bases and 60' pitching distance), they may return to their Majors teams for one more year. We encourage all 13-year-olds to try the big field, but a few are not yet comfortable there, and they are welcome to return to their Majors team. Players must decide before March 6.

For the other 13-year-olds, we will create at least two travel teams, possibly three. We will field travel teams in two leagues: The Philadelphia Recreation Department (Rec) League (Mt. Airy Blue), and the Montgomery County Intercommunity League (Mt. Airy Red). On the Rec League squad, players compete for playing time. Substitutions are based on game situations and reentry is limited. Consequently. every player may not play in every game.  On the Mt. Airy Red squad (the Inter-Community league) participation rules require that everyone play at least two innings of every game, and everyone bats with unlimited substitutions and reentry. The Rec League is a bit more competitive than the Inter-Community League, although the children will receive the same level of instruction in each. Both leagues are travel leagues.  Half the games are at home, and half are away. All games are in the Philadelphia area, usually within a 30 minute drive from the field. Occasionally (but not often), teams may travel a bit farther.
PRACTICES

AA, AAA, Major League and Senior League coaches will begin practices as soon as their rosters are complete, typically in mid-March. Each coach will develop a preseason and routine practice schedule for their team. Practices are where we teach children to be better players, and all players to be a better team. It is absolutely essential that all players come to practices.

CLEAN-UP DAY

Please come out and help get the field ready for opening day:

Sunday March 15
Rain Date:   Sunday, March 22
1:00 - 4:00 PM

We'll be painting, raking and sweeping. Wear old clothes. Bring the kids. Bring your neighbors. The more people, the better.

PARENT ORIENTATION: Uniforms, Schedules, Photos, and More

All Mt. Airy Baseball Parents must attend THE Parent Orientation on April 4, 2009. It will be held at the Mt, Airy Presbyterian Church, at Cermantown and Mt. Pleasant Aves. The times are:

T-Ball: 9 AM
AA:  10 AM
AAA:  11 AM
Majors/Seniors: Noon

Parents will be able to pick up uniforms and schedules, meet their children's coaches, and receive other important information about this season's activities. This year, each team will be responsible for providing one team parent to help at the snack stand during each game. You will be able exchange times with other parents at the Parent Orientation. Our thanks to Pastor Higgs and Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church, for use of the church and their help in organizing the event.

GLOVES AND CLEATS EXCHANGE

If you have old baseball gloves or baseball shoes collecting dust, bring them to the Parent Orientation Meeting so that they may be used by younger players who may need them.

SUMMER CAMP

In collaboration with the Richie Ashburn Foundation, Mt. Airy Baseball will offer a three-day baseball camp for players 8-12. The camp is scheduled for June 22-25; sessions will run from 9:00 AM -12:00 PM and include two games each day. Local high school coaches and players will conduct the camp, which is free to all Mt. Airy Baseball players. Additional information will be available at the Parent Orientation.

COACHES AND ASSISTANT COACHES
A Coaches' Orientation and Clinic was held on January 24. If you were not on our mailing list but indicated on the registration form that you are interested in coaching, a League Commissioner will contact you as we identify coaching vacancies. Each team will need one head coach and at least two assistant coaches.

Attending coaching clinics is essential for all coaches and assistant coaches. Each coach will receive a handbook of skills, drills and practice techniques. However, no handbook can substitute for demonstration, instruction, and practice. If you are interested in coaching and have not been to a coaches' clinic this year, please call 215-552-8103 and leave your name, address, and phone number. We will send you information about the date and time of the next clinic.

OPENING DAY

Opening day is April 11, 2009. There will be a brief opening-day ceremony at 10:00 AM and then it's . . . Play Ball!

We hope you have a great season, and look forward to seeing you on the field.

April 25: Help Clean Up Pleasant Playground

On Saturday, April 25th from 8:30am - 12:30pm, Trolley Car Diner & Deli, 22nd ward leader Vernon Price and East Mt. Airy Neighbors will be joining forces for Mt. Airy Pride Day on Chew Avenue (between Upsal Street to Gorgas Lane) and its side streets.

Mt. Airy Pride Day is an outgrowth of the MLK Day of Service that Trolley Car Diner & Deli owner Ken Weinstein and Vernon Price sponsor every January. We are asking Mt. Airy Baseball players and parents to participate in Mt. Airy Pride Day by helping at Pleasant Playground (Pleasant St and Chew Avenue). Our last clean-up there was rained out.

We need help completing the bullpen area, painting fences and walls and cleaning the surrounding area. Pleasant was recently renovated with a grant from Major League Baseball and is home to many AAA and Majors games every year. We need to do our part to maintain the park and keep the surrounding area clean and green.

Meet at Pleasant Playground from 10am - 12:30pm to help out! Donations are appreciated if you cannot attend. Please send checks made payable to "Village of Mt. Airy" to Ken Weinstein, 5219 Germantown Avenue, Phila, PA 19144. Contact Po-Hong Yu at pohong.yu @ gmail.com or 215-848-1133 x208 to sign up or with any questions.
