2010 brings the Winter Olympics in February, and another season of baseball in Lynn Valley will follow almost immeiately after that big event. While we hope for snow in February, we will hope that the sun is out and the fields are green come April.
Registration
Our online registration is open, and I encourage you to register your children as soon as possible. We will have an in person registration time on Saturday, January 16, 2009 at Lynn Valley Centre, but our preference is for as many kids as possible to register online. Early online registration will assist the planning process for the Board and the division coordinators. Online registration will be open until midnight on February 28, 2010, after which late fees will apply and your child may be placed on a waiting list.
Operations
As with most amateur and children’s sports programs in the Province, LVLL faces challenges that include significant reductions in the amount of grants and other funding made available. However, LVLL continues to offer relatively inexpensive registration fees and good value for your money. We will also work hard to control our expenses.Lynn Valley will continue to operate our teams from some of the most spectacular baseball locations in the Lower Mainland. Kilmer Park will remain the cornerstone location for our Rally Cap and Minors divisions, including the wonderful Kilmer Park Concession. At beautiful Viewlynn Park, home to our Majors teams, we have a new grass infield, and drainage and irrigation that have been installed. The Little League season will officially start in early April, and run through the middle of June. Opening Day will be Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Kilmer Park. Post-season all-star play will continue from mid-June through the end of July.
Coaches
Our annual coaches meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 2, 2009 in the Cedar Room at the Delbrook Rec Centre, but we would appreciate if you could submit a coach application as soon as possible if you are interested in coaching this season. We cannot run a successful Little League without our volunteers, and particularly our coaches. We have had a great group of coaches in the last few years and we look forward to their return this season.
Majors Tryouts and Minors Assessments
Majors tryouts (10-12 year olds interested in a more competitive level of baseball) are scheduled for January 31 and February 7, 2010. Minors skills assessments (8-11 year olds) are scheduled for March 20 and 21, 2010. All 8 year old players (except for those who choose to play in the Peewee division) will be assessed during the Minors skills assessments to determine the most suitable division for them. Please see the “Divisions” tab on the LVLL website for more information on the different age divisions.
The Rally Cap program has been a tremendous success in the T-ball and Peewee divisions, and we will continue to use the Rally Cap structure with an emphasis on FUNdamentals and the objective of keeping as many kids in Little League baseball for many years after Peewee.
Need for Volunteers and Concession Coordinator
We have an energetic and enthusiastic Board of Directors to guide us and prepare everyone for the upcoming Little League season. However, remember that a successful season depends on the volunteers throughout the season. We are looking for coaches, assistant coaches, concession captains, umpires, and others to assist with the special events during the season. We are specifically interested in finding a Concession Coordinator for the Kilmer Park Concession. The role of Concession Coordinator is vital to the League running a well-organized Concession. It is not a time intensive position. If you are interested in learning more about this position, please let me know by return email or telephone.
I look forward to a wonderful season of Little League baseball in Lynn Valley.

THERE ARE ALWAYS QUESTIONS THAT PARENTS HAVE WITH REGARDS TO THE RALLY CAP DIVISION. OUR COORDINATOR CHRIS HEAL HAS PUT TOGETHER SOME OF THE ANSWERS FOR YOU. WE HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU IN YOUR REGISTRATION.
What is Rally Cap? Rally cap is a format in which game play and practice are built into one session. 3 teams are involved, while one team practices the other 2 play a mini game, then teams switch. Every team has one practice and 2 mini games during each session. Everyone gets to bat during a game, and we do not keep score.
What days do they play? They play 2 games a week. Games usually take between 1 – 1.5 hours with 1 game during the week on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday @ 6pm, and one game on Saturday, games can start between 9am and 1:30pm. We play between early April and mid June.
Can my child be on his friends’ team? While we do take requests, it isn’t always possible to fill every request as we try to keep teams to a small number so that everyone gets the attention required. We try to keep teams between 6-8 kids, and do our very best to try match kids up with kids they may know.
Parents are encouraged to volunteer to help coach as we only have 6-8 kids on a team and would like 2 coaches per team, as we know not everyone can make every game. We do offer clinics at the beginning of the year to help get you started coaching and can supply reference material to help plan your sessions, and at this stage it is all about getting out and having fun with your kids playing and learning baseball.
Any further Questions please feel free to contact Chris Heal Director of Rally Cap.cheal8@shaw.ca
