Scrimmage Kick Outline by Scott Taylor VI. SCRIMMAGE KICKS A.) Fundamentals - K may Punt, Drop Kick, or Placekick from in or behind the neutral zone before team possession has changed. - R may catch or recover anywhere on the field and advance. - K may catch or recover in or behind the neutral zone and advance. - If K catches or recovers beyond the neutral zone, the ball is dead. - If R is first to touch beyond the zone, a new series will be awarded. - A Scrimmage Kick which goes out-of-bounds between the goal lines belongs to R. B.) Numbering Exception (NX) - When K sets or shifts into scrimmage kick formation, players must take an initial position on the line, between the ends, and remain ineligible throughout the down. C.) First Touching - Occurs beyond the neutral zone when K touches the ball before R. - Is canceled if R touches then fouls, or if any penalty is accepted. D.) Illegal Kicking and Batting - Only SIX loose balls may be legally batted: * A fumble in flight. * A backward pass in flight, but NOT forward by the passing team. * A forward pass, but ONLY by players eligible to touch it. * A low scrimmage kick which R is trying to block in or behind the expanded neutral zone. * A scrimmage kick in flight beyond the NZ which K may bat in any direction provided there is no R player in position to catch. * A grounded scrimmage kick beyond the NZ which K may bat backwards ONLY, towards his OWN goal line. Note: If a scrimmage kick which cannot a score has broken the plane of R's goal line when batted, the ball is already dead and the result is a touchback. - FG attempts by placekick must be held in position by the holder. - An illegal kick is considered a fumble. E.) No defensive player shall block, tackle, or charge into the kicker or the holder other than when - It is not reasonably certain that a kick will be made. - The defense touches the kick and contact is unavoidable. - Contact is slight and partially caused by movement of the kicker. - Contact is caused by R being blocked into the kicker. Displacing or dislodging the kicker or holder - 5 yard penalty. F.) No defensive player shall charge directly into the scrimmage kick snapper until he has had an opportunity to regain his balance and defend himself. G.) Fair Catch - R may signal anytime a free or scrimmage kick is in flight. - After a Valid or Invalid signal, no receiver may advance. - Is made by a receiver who gives a Valid signal and catches the kick between R's scrimmage line and goal line. - Only receivers who give a Valid signal are afforded protection. - Receivers who signal are prohibited from blocking until the kick ends. - The option to Snap or Free Kick remains after: * Any dead ball foul * A live ball foul and the penalty is accepted * An inadvertent whistle and the down is to be replayed. H.) Kick Catch Interference - During any scrimmage kick in flight beyond the neutral zone, K shall not touch the ball or R, nor obstruct R's path to the ball. A fair catch signal is NOT required for interference. The exception to this rule permits K to touch a Scrimmage Kick in flight provided there is no R player in position to catch the ball. 8/04 |
