SOME GOOD THOUGHTS
FROM THE OFFICIAL'S DISCUSSION BOARD

"New white hat"

"I am the new white hat on my varsity crew this year. What adivice can you give me? I've seen what my past referee did but there might be subtle things that I have missed"

"Blue"

Take your time...absolutely!
And...
...don't worry about the other 4 officials and what they're doing. Don't try to officiate out of your zone unless somebody needs help.
...don't abandon the QB too quickly.
...stay back and don't close too quickly. The flanks and U can handle the ball.
...get a good pace and maintain it.
...if you boot something, forget it and move on. One play at a time.
...when a foul is reported to you, get clear of players and give a preliminary signal immediately. Don't "walk through" your signals.
...almost never blow your whistle other than to mark the ball ready.
...don't think you're more important than the rest of the crew, but you ARE in charge. So, TAKE CHARGE!
...be firm with the coaches but not a jerk.
...be organized.
...change your pre-game weekly so it doesn't become stale.
