2003 Varsity Assignments
The assigning of varsity games this year was more difficult than in any year in the past. We have 2 fewer varsity games this year than last season due to the college crew receiving a full high school schedule. We have ten officials with several years of experience. I tried very hard to give every one their fair share of the pie. That does not mean equal share. I have a responsibility to the schools to make sure the crew assigned to their games is skilled enough to handle that particular game.
Check this schedule and notify myself or John Carricato immediately if their are conflicts. I did not get availability info from John V ( fire department and son playing) or Tim A ( AFA games) and I suspect they will both have conflicts that will need to be re-scheduled.
Sub-varsity games will be assigned after the meeting on August 5th. It is very important that you attend that meeting.

Developing a Slow whistle
This is an article by Lee Jones a Texas football official that appeared on E-Referee in October of last year. e-Referee is now officiating.com and is a really good site for officiating information.
I have been a big believer in the hand whistle. I believe it to be the only way to go. Hand whistle or lanyard Mr. Jones geves us some food for thought when sounding the whistle.

Penalty Enforcement Philosophy
This is an article that outlines what I believe to be a sound common sense penalty enforcement philosophy. We want quality flags, not a quantity of flags. The key to being a great official in my mind is what you don't call, not what you do call.
