LRFC 95s Bring Ft. Smith Express 95s to Screeching Halt 5-1
The LRFC 95s traveled to Ft. Smith for a late Sunday afternoon Arkansas State League game against the Ft Smith Express. The Express played in their Dawg Daze weekend tournament and entered the match with two games already played earlier in the day. The Express ended up as the U15 Champions in their home tournament and came into their final game of the day with some tired legs which certainly did not help as they faced a very well rested LRFC 95 Girls team. Since the Express had already played two games the coaches agreed to play an abbreviated 60 minute game by knocking off 10 minutes in each half. Blue got on the board first in the fifth minute when Cat took a shot on goal from about 10 feet out. The ball bounced off the goalie’s hands and Natalie quickly got her foot on the rebound to put the ball across the goal line giving LRFC the 1-0 lead. Two minutes later Ellen passed the ball forward to Kaitlin who placed the ball over the Express goalie’s hands into the high center area of the net. Natalie got LRFC’s third goal when she went untouched up the middle of the field and took a shot that ricocheted off the Express goalie on the right side of the goal. As the ball rolled to the opposite side of the net Natalie followed her shot and punched it in nearly crashing into the far post as she made the close range shot. The Express were able to answer before the half when a corner kick bounced off Caitlin’s hands and was punched into the LRFC goal to pull the Express within two. After the break LRFC scored two more times with both goals coming off assists from Cat. Natalie registered a the rare “hat trick” with her third goal after receiving the ball from Cat. Meghan finished the scoring when Cat sent a long ball into open space on the right side of the pitch where Meghan beat the Express defender to the ball and punched it in for the final margin of 5-1. The Express enjoyed a successful weekend with four tournament wins and some Championship hardware, but LRFC put a sudden stop to their winning ways with both teams final game for the weekend. Offensively Natalie took 5 shots on goal followed by Cat (2), Ellen (2), Melissa (2), and Meghan (1). Sara took two corner kicks but Blue did not score on either try from the corner. Overall LRFC outplayed their opponent, but to be fair, Blue came into the game with fresh legs. The Ft. Smith Express will be playing in the Capital City Cup and very well could show a whole different effort against LRFC with equal rest for both teams. Go Blue!
