Summer INFO from LHS Head Coach Joe Willmann

May 28, 2009

Dear wrestlers and parents:

I commend you on your very successful and bright season last year. Lowell wrestling is on the rise at every single level of the program. At the club level, the Lowell Wrestling Club took home three state trophies: Folkstyle State Runner-up (Peewee-Novice), Folkstyle State third place (Schoolboy-Junior), and Freestyle State Champs!!! The LMS squad had an undefeated season and finished in 3rd place at the State Tournament. The LHS program ended the season with two IHSAA state placers.

To win a team state title, it takes a great effort by a lot of people. It takes a level of commitment that is hard to match. With this letter you should find either the middle school or high school training schedule for the summer. The middle school has six practices over the summer and is also invited to participate in our summer camp. These practices will be run by the high school coaching staff as well as the middle school coaching staff. It is important for you to get to know the high school staff as well as the athletes that you will one day compete with.

The high school has three lifts a week and one practice time depending on your weight class. We are teaming with the football team for lifting. If you are a football player, you will follow the lift time as scheduled by football. If not, you will follow the time on our schedule.

While none of these are mandatory, they are strongly recommended. Our success or failure is dependent on our participation in these activities. Remember, the 5 P’s of athletics are: Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.

I look forward to a great summer of training and improvement.

RDP

Joe Willmann

Head Wrestling Coach Lowell High School

ThreeCrownsClear.jpg
It's not one, nor two, but a TRIPLE CROWN!
Jake Tucker and Drew Hughes earned triple crown honors today in Indianapolis; both Lowell wrestlers won the ISWA Freestyle State finals! By doing so, Tucker and Hughes capture the coveted title of "Triple Crown". Tucker's titles at Folkstyle state, Greco-Roman state, and Freestyle state lifted him to the top. Hughes' titles at Middle School state, Greco-Roman state, and Freestyle state vaulted him to the top. Congratulations to both boys on achieving an extremely rare and difficult task!
Also at the ISWA Freestyle State finals, Kenny Hughes earned the title of State Runner-up by losing a very close finals match. Alex Mavros added to his Greco-Roman placing last week by placing 5th in freestyle. Lowell High School's Nathan Cleveland won the state title at 215lbs. Nathan achieved a Double-Crown this year by winning both folkstyle and freestyle state! (He was unable to compete at Greco State)
A special thanks goes out to LHS Head Coach Joe Willmann! Coach Willmann was matside the entire weekend and assisted the boys in wrestling their very best!

25 LWC members take the challenge at Folkstyle State! 9 receive medals!

The 2009 State Finals was a tremendous experience for the Lowell Wrestling Club. 25 members traveled to compete and 9 wrestlers placed! The state tournament is a very difficult place to wrestle where the best grapplers from all over the state try to earn a medal in the Top 8. I want to congratulate all of the parents and wrestlers who took the time and money to drive to INDY for this event. Our pursuit of taking our program to the highest level will not become a reality without dedicated parents who are willing to sacrifice their time and money in order for their child to gain valuable experience. Our LWC parents are doing just that! I am so proud to be a part of the LWC and I am very proud of each wrestler who competed, whether they medaled or not; the fact that they participated is HUGE!

The Lowell Razorback Wrestling Team is setting up a "Help the Asher Family" Fund. Anyone who would like to donate money to help the Ashers through this challenging time can call Coach Ken Hughes at 696-8755. The Razorback Wrestling Team will be making a donation as well.

Meatgrinder at Middle School State! Charlie Mavros and Zak Mroczkowski wrestle great!

The Indiana Middle School State Championships are considered by many the most competitive wrestling tournament in the state, including the high school series. Wrestlers have ONE (1) day to go through brackets as large as 40 or 50 competitors often returning home after midnight.

NINE (9) middle school wrestlers (All Lowell Razorbacks)traveled to New Castle, Indiana to challenge themselves!

Charlie Mavros, an 8th grader at Lowell Middle School and Zak Mroczkowski, a 7th grader at LMS both wrestled to a top 8 finish. The ISWA only awards the TOP 6 but both Charlie and Zak would both have wrestled for 7/8th place if the bracket would have allowed for it. That's a tremendous job by both boys! Mavros defeated local rival, Grimmer's Escobedo, to avenge an earlier loss at the Conference Tournament. Mroczkowski lost a heartbreaker by 1pt in the quarter-finals and showed the whole state that he is to be reckoned with!

Other wrestlers competing were Kenny Hughes (6th grader), Derek Pearman (6th grader), Mitch Roadruck (7th grader), Josh Bottos (6th grader), Alex Mavros (6th grader), Scott Pitrowski (8th grader), and Ryan Patterson (7th grader). Hughes, Roadruck, and Bottos all had winning records in the tournament.

The tournament pits 6th, 7th, and 8th graders against each other in each weight class!

Way to go, Fellas! We are proud of you for giving a good effort! The underclassmen will have another chance to strike gold next year!

A special thanks goes out to Coaches: Roadruck, Hughes, and Bilka for making the trip to New Castle and coaching the boys!

Email Coach Tucker for any omissions.

Hughes and Tucker, Freestyle State Champions! 4 other Razorbacks medal in INDY!!
Indianapolis played host to the ISWA (Indiana State Wrestling Association) Freestyle State Finals at the Indiana State Fair Grounds (West Pavilion) this past weekend.

The Lowell Razorbacks recorded one of the best weekends in club history by placing all Six (6) of its competitors. The Razorbacks went 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 4th.

Drew Hughes won his 3rd state title (2 folkstyle, 1 freestyle) by destroying the competition. Drew only gave up 2pts in the whole tournament! Great job, Drew!

Jake Tucker won his 2nd state title (1 greco-roman, 1 freestyle) by defeating this year's folkstyle champion and also beating his arch-nemesis (and good friend) from Crown Point, Darden Schurg by pin fall. What a season for Jake!

Johnny "Spider" Alessia came onto the wrestling scene as a Pee Wee wrestler this season and in his inaugural debut he finished runner-up at folkstyle state and again this weekend at freestyle state! We are going to be calling Johnny "THE NATURAL" instead of "Spider"!! Outstanding work, Johnny!

Kenny Hughes finished 3rd but had the Champion pinned but the official failed to get into position and Kenny eventually lost the match. Kenny wrestled tough and showed the whole state that he is a serious CONTENDER for a state title every year!
Way to go, Kenny!

Mitch "Roadkill" Roadruck probably wrestled the best that he has ever wrestled at the freestyle state finals. Mitch was nearly unstoppable on day 1 but ran into some stiff competition on day 2 and earned a very respectable 4th place in a large bracket! We are very proud of you, Mitch!

Jeremy Crocker wrestled in a weight class that was 15lbs heavier than his bodyweight but battled hard for two days and finished 4th in a large bracket. Nice job, Jeremy! All of the hard work that Jeremy is putting in is paying off for him.

The Lowell Razorbacks showed the whole state why they are among the ELITE clubs in the state of Indiana. Great Job boys!

WHAT A SEASON!!!!

Jake Tucker Champion! Drew Hughes Runnerup! Mitch Roadruck, 3rd! Kenny Hughes, 4th! at GRECO-ROMAN STATE FINALS!!
Lots of action for FOUR HOGS that traveled to INDY to wrestle for a state title in Greco-Roman Wrestling. The Razorbacks looked tough bringing home 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place medals at the state meet.

Jake Tucker won the Midget 70lb State Championship by defeating the Folkstyle State Champion and also a wrestler who was Runnerup at Folkstyle state. Way to go, Jake!

Drew Hughes cruised through the bracket and reached the finals despite being sick all day long with a stomach virus. Drew showed more heart than most by going out there and wrestling in the finals. Several controversial calls were the difference in Drew not winning the state title. He finished 2nd. We are so proud of you, Drew!
YOU are the true champion in our hearts!

Mitch Roadruck finished 3rd and looked very strong all day long. He battled a couple of tough wrestlers enroute to bringing home the Bronze Medal. Nice work Mitchell, all of the hard work is paying off!!

Kenny Hughes brought home 4th place and lost two very close matches versus some quality opponents. Those two matches could have gone either way, Kenny looked STRONG all day long! Kenny, we loved watching you tear it up!!

HUGHES' boys both AAU ALL-AMERICANS!!!
Kenny and Drew Hughes both earned AAU ALL-AMERICAN status this past weekend at the AAU ELEMENTARY DUALS in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Kenny was 6-3 and Drew was 6-3...all of their losses were very CLOSE matches. In order to be considered an All-American at this event, a wrestler must win at least 6 matches out of 9 total bouts.

Drew's recap:
He lost 2-0 in Overtime against the Illinois north kid, Kyle Akens.
He lost 2-0 to Trevor Murano from Iowa black.
He lost another nail-bitter 4-2 in Overtime to the Iowa gold kid. All were second year novices (2yrs older than Drew)

Drew finished with 4 pins, one major decision, while giving up just 8 points in 9 matches but just couldn't come away with the tight ones.

Kenny's recap:
Kenny lost two tight ones 7-5 and 4-2 in Overtime. In both matches, he had the lead in the third period. He also had three pins and one major and could of easily been 8-1.

Way to go HUGHES' boys, we are very proud of you!!

Sunday, April 15

John "Spider" Alessia: 1st Place
Jake Tucker: 2nd Place
Mitch Roadruck: 2nd Place
Derek Pearman: 3rd Place
Trevor Asher: DNP

Johnny Alessia wrestled tough and had one real "tester" on his way to earning another GOLD medal in the PeeWee 40lbs division.

Jake Tucker bumped up a weight class to wrestle his arch-nemesis and good friend, Darden Schurg from Crown Point. It was a barn burner of match, Schurg won the match on this day, 2-1;7-6. They were 4-4 versus each other going into this match, they have been wrestling each other since the age of 5!!

Mitch Roadruck stormed through the field barely breaking a sweat. A match for the title was set with none other than Sam Ferdig, an extremely tough wrestler from the Mishawaka area. Mitch came up short but he battled hard and brought home 2nd place.

Derek Pearman earned a Bronze medal and wrestled Joey Mammolenti, a National Champ, very tough. Derek has a lot to be proud of for giving an effort like that!

Trevor Asher had an OFF day but he'll be back, keep working hard Trevor!!

(June 22nd, 23rd, and 24th)

Sunday, April 1
Razorbacks Claim TWO (2) USA WRESTLING FOLKSTYLE ALL-AMERICANS!!!
Seth Abad and Drew Hughes both placed 5th at the USA Wrestling's Folkstyle Nationals held in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Hughes lost to last year's 50lb National Champ in a nailbiter and also to last year's 55lb National Champ. Abad won his final match of the day after a receiving an opening bye to bring home the HUGE MEDAL and the All-American status.

Mitch Roadruck wrestled tough and defeated his first opponent from Louisiana then lost a tough match in the 3rd round. Mitch looked good though and battled hard in the consolations.

Jake Tucker defeated a Louisiana wrestler then lost a heated match, 10-8, in the 2nd round to the eventual 4th place finisher from Wisconsin. Both of Tucker's losses came to medal winners.

Jeremy Crocker didn't make weight by .1 and had to move up to 130lbs...he had a difficult time with the bigger and stronger kids. Jeremy gained some valuable experience though on a National Stage.

Kurt Monix looked good and went 2-2 in the JUNIOR division even though Kurt is only a Sophomore in High School, he looked very tough out there in Iowa.

The whole trip was a GREAT experience!! We will be heading out there again in '08. Last year, Indiana sent 37 wrestlers to this event. This year, 135 Indiana wrestlers participated in this event and it was nice to see all of the Indiana kids looking so tough against national powers like Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and Illinos.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE: Razorbacks to practice for freestyle at Hanover Central!!
ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS:

A 3-0 vote by the Razorback Wrestling Board decided that the 2007 freestyle/greco season will be spent at Hanover Central Central High School in Cedar Lake, IN. NO practices for freestyle/greco will be in LOWELL this season. The board agreed that the number of wrestlers enrolled for the Rick Larsen Wildcat Wrestling Club combined with the Razorback Wrestling Club would provide a better training opportunity for our kids for the freestyle season.

The Razorbacks will resume training for the FOLKSTYLE SEASON again in October of 2008.

There is a TWENTY (20) dollar fee that should be paid directly to Steve Micic at Hanover Central High School during/after one of their practice(s) to cover administrative fees for their club.

The last Razorback Wrestling practice this season will be held at 6pm on Thursday, March 29th. We will also wrestle on Tuesday, March 27th at LHS, 6pm. (These are folkstyle practices to prepare for folkstyle nationals in Iowa).

PRACTICES AT HANOVER CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL FOR FREESTYLE WILL BE:

MONDAY: 6PM-730PM
WEDNESDAY: 6PM-730PM

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call one of the coaches/board members.

This decision is best for the wrestlers and the coaches due to baseball season starting and time-management being very important to everyone involved.
