Krystal Lewallen's Northern Kentucky University softball team flirted with perfection this season, winning a record 55 games in a row.

NKU eventually lost twice in the NCAA Division II World Series, but Lewallen's junior year ended on a practically perfect note yesterday when she was named NCAA Division II Athlete of the Year by Collegiate Women Sports Awards.

"I was really excited and surprised to get it because there are so many good athletes out there, and it's hard to compare a sport to a sport," said Lewallen, a South Oldham High School graduate.

"She's certainly very deserving," said NKU coach Kathy Stewart.

The right-hander from Crestwood was 32-1 this season with 20 shutouts. She struck out 335 and posted an ERA of 0.36 as her team finished 55-2.

Lewallen was one of 12 nominees for Athlete of the Year, which involved voting by women's sports administrators throughout the country. She will be honored at a press conference and luncheon in New York on June 29. The award also means $5,000 for her school from American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Despite winning the top honor for an individual athlete, she still aches over losing the team prize.

"I'm still not over our two losses at the end of the season," she said. "That was a real hard thing, because we'd been No. 1 almost the whole year. … It was real hard to lose the two games that mattered most. … It still hurts to think about it."

Loudonville Tournament Press Release
LOUDONVILLE YOUTH ASSOCIATION, INC
GIRL'S SOFTBALL TOURNAMENTS
RIVERSIDE PARK    LOUDONVILLE, OHIO

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Prepared by Gail Mowry for the Loudonville Youth Association.

The village of Loudonville is bracing for a major softball invasion. July 15-17 marks the 28th renewal
of one of Ohio's most popular, and most competitive, summer events, the Loudonville Youth Association,
Inc. 18-U Girl's Softball Tournament. The event is sanctioned by the Amateur Softball Association. Pro-
ceeds from the weekend souvenir sales and concessions will help finance the baseball and softball youth
programs in the village.

An impressive list of twenty-four traveling squads will converge on Mohican Country, with one team in
particular creating a pre-tourney buzz. Tournament Director, Bev Bilger, has landed the defending ASA
Class A 18-U national runners-up, the Louisville (KY) Lady Sluggers. The Lady Sluggers were 48-4 in 2004
with one loss being the national title game in Fresno, CA. When reached by phone at a tournament in
Binghamton, NY, Louisville head coach, Don Dobina, commented that he was looking forward to testing
the strength of Ohio softball and his players also wanted to try some "serious" canoeing.

Local interest is provided by the Millersburg Diablos, coached by former Hillsdale and Ohio State star,
Jaime Chenevey. The Diablos begin pool play on Friday, July 15 vs. Lady Lasers Black at 6:00 pm on
Riverside Park Field #2. The tournament will conclude with Sunday's single-elimination bracket play
beginning at 8:00 am. The Championship Game is tentatively scheduled for 6:30 pm.

Tournament title contenders from the remainder of the field would appear to be any of the four Lady
Laser entries, along with perennial powerhouses Alliance Maddogs Gold, Ohio Bandits, Ohio Ice, Akron
Tiger Lillies, Grand Slam, Road Runners Elite and the Central Ohio Stingrays.
