Swim Tips: Backstroke
Here’s some tips from Coach Michelle on how to make your backstroke more smooth and powerful:
START: Streamline with a dolphin kick underwater.
HEAD POSITION: Keep your head in-line with your spine. Your eyes should be looking straight up or slightly backwards.
HANDS: Your thumb should come out first, and your pinky should enter the water first.
SHOULDERS AND HIPS: Rotate your shoulders and hips side-to-side with each arm pull.
KICK: Use strong, fast flutter kicks, and keep your toes pointed.
STROKE COUNT: During practice, get an idea how many strokes you typically take inside the flags during sprints. Then you’ll be able to anticipate where the wall will be...and you won’t have to worry about crashing!
FLIP TURN: If you are racing a 50-yard event, remember that you must flip from your back to your stomach in one continuous motion. You are only allowed one “freestyle” arm pull on your stomach before flipping.
FINISH: You must touch the wall on your back.
