Tuesday, July 3 Running LOG TOPS 13,469 Miles @ OCT 22 LOHI 500 Mile Club: First Members:
Boys: Valencia(1031),Krizman(871),Leon ,(642),Taylor-R(576)Aylor(583) Sunday, September 9 GREAT TRIP TO THE CENTRAL COAST! The team kicked off their competitive season with a reward trip to Morro Bay on the Central Coast. Everything went smooth as the team traveled on Friday and enjoyed a workout on the beach and some time to enjoy the water and frisbee football. A huge thank you to the Haerr's for preparing our pasta dinner and the Aylor's and the Akahoshi's for the breakfast on Saturday morning! The Grizzlies faced much tougher competition this year at this meet and performed very well. No awards are given at this meet and team scores are not kept, but it is possible to add up the scores yourself. With 22 teams attending, the varsity girls finished 4th behind a highly ranked Corona team, Atascadero and Ventura. They defeated two ranked squads in Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. Lexie Bravo and Melissa Edwards led the way for the team. The boys have flown under the radar this summer, but that may not last long after a fine performance against strong teams. They finished fifth, losing only to Ventura...ranked 4th in the NATION, Cabrillo -ranked 4th in Division 2, Corona...ranked in the top 16 in Division 1 and Morro Bay, the number 2 team in Division 4. Overall, they were only 19 points out of 3rd, so a very close race. Brett Valencia finished 3rd overall, taking down two of Dyestatcal's California Top 40 Returnees. Ethan Krizman finished 6th overall, also beating one of those returnees. Thanks to all the parents who helped make this trip possible, including Mrs. Melton for chaperoning on the bus. Sunday, September 16 MIXED RESULTS AT WOODBRIDGE Boys Shatter Team-Time School Record!!! The team traveled to Irvine to compete in the ever-growing Woodbridge Invitational on Saturday. They were greeted with warm and breezy conditions that would eventually give way to ideal cool and calm weather for the later races. The flat and fast course is a team favorite and eager freshmen set their marks to beat in the coming years, while veterans tried to lower their previous best, with many successful. On paper, the girls struggled. But keep in mind that they were not in the original Rated ("Junior Sweepstakes") field, only added in when a team scratched. While a better team finish would have been nice, they did finish where they should have based on the seeding. Also, their team-time (determined by adding the five fastest individual times) of 97:30 was 61st out of the 166 teams competing on the day. The boys were out to prove that they should have been included in the rated race, and they did just that. The coaches felt that they could beat "half of the teams" in that race and their time was better than 11 of the 23 schools. In the process, they shattered the team-time school record by a full minute, running 79:17. That placed them 42nd out of 181 schools racing on the day. In addition, Brett Valencia and Ethan Krizman cracked the "Hot 100" list of fastest times of the day, while Daniel Hawkins ran the 11th fastest time of all freshmen competing. Here are the complete results, with improvement from last year. BOYS WIN FIRST VARSITY INVITATIONAL IN SCHOOL HISTORY WHILE THE GIRLS A STRONG 3RD! A great trip ended with a great race! The top seven boys and girls traveled to San Francisco this weekend to compete in the Lowell Invitational held in beautiful Golden Gate Park. A trip that nearly didn't happen began with the drive up on Thursday afternoon. On Friday, the team did their pre-meet workout on the course in Golden Gate Park followed by a meeting and campus tour of the University of San Francisco. Thanks to the coaches for taking time out of their day to meet us. After a group photo across the Golden Gate Bridge, the team enjoyed lunch and some free time at Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. After a quick swim, we returned to the city for a great meal at Tai Chi and made our way down Lombard Street before returning to the hotel. Heavy rain at breakfast gave way to cloudy and cool conditions at the afternoon race. Circumstances forced Elle Farrar into the JV race, where she ran a great race to finish 3rd overall. The girls battled two very tough NoCal teams to the end, but finished 3rd out of 16 schools competing and their team time would have won the other varsity race. Lexie Bravo led the way with a 3rd place finish and she was supported by a furious finish by Melissa Edwards to take 7th. All-in-all, the team placed all five scorers in the top 30. The boys looked strong from the start and made history with the first varsity win in an invitational in the school's young existence. Brett Valencia battled yet another "California returning Top 40" runner to the end, finishing 2nd, with Ethan Krizman a strong 6th. All five scorers finished in the top 25 as Chris Delgado reeled in 5 places alone down the last 100 meter stretch. Nobody looked forward to the long journey home, but it was made more bearable after such a strong team effort. Thank you to all the athletes for their responsible behavior and for making it an outstanding trip! Sunday, September 23 BASELINE LEAGUE MEET #1 RESULTS ALL TEAMS FINISH IN THE TOP 3! There are times when the outcome of a meet is not the most important thing. Wednesday was one of those times. After collapsing within 200 yards of the finish, Ethan was taken to the hospital and after multiple tests, was released last night, and that is great news. In typical Ethan fashion, he was not worried about his health, but upset that he did not finish. We're instead thrilled that he was okay. The girls JV got things rolling yesterday finishing 2nd behind Upland and we saw the emergence of freshman Alice Zayer, who finished 2nd overall with a varsity-caliber time. Elle Farrar and Tori Greaves ran well to finish in the top 10. The boys JV nipped Rancho by 1 point to hold onto 3rd. With a varsity runner out ill, we had to use a JV runner to fill the gap. While we still would have finished 3rd, it would have made an impact on the score. Ryan Massie led the way for the Grizzlies. The varsity girls came in with only Woodbridge as the common invitational with other league foes. In that meet, Upland had the upper hand by nearly 4 minutes of team time and Claremont was up 45 seconds on the Grizzlies. However, these are veterans and they nearly pulled off a huge upset, finishing 2nd, just 13 points behind Upland. Lexie Bravo continued her season of fine racing by finishing 4th. Anya Watford looked very strong taking 7th overall. Melissa Edwards also finished in the top 10. The varsity boys, with their strongest team ever, hoped to close the gap on perennial champion Upland and were in the process of doing just that. Brett Valencia stayed in the lead pack throughout and as others dropped off, he found himself alone, winning by 16 seconds in the fastest time ever run by a Grizzly in a league meet at Guasti. Ethan Krizman moved from 7th to 3rd at the start of the 3rd mile and maintained it nearly to the finish. Finish or no finish, it was a great race. Tommy Cottam ran 2nd for the team finishing 13th. Overall, the boys finished 3rd as a team and will look to improve on that at Red Hill. BOTH GIRLS TEAMS TAKE 2ND AT BREA-OLINDA The team traveled to Brea to compete in the Brea-Olinda Invitational at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. We wanted to follow up our first league meet with a fun invitational with a different format. Races were broke down by your spot on the team (ex. all the #1's and #2's raced together) and everyone found it slow-going on this course. With much of it on narrow trails, with little chance of passing, some grass and a significant hill, times were not impressive. Nonetheless, some good performances were put forward and the girls varsity placed 2nd behind a powerful Vista Murrieta squad and the FS girls placed 2nd behind Mater Dei. The boys finished 6th overall. Oh yeah...Coach O was very generous with letter points, running 21:17 in the coaches race...sure felt faster! Complete Results below: Var Girls 1-2 (42 in the race): 6. Saturday, October 6 SCHOOL RECORDS FALL AT INLAND EMPIRE! VALENCIA AND BRAVO TOP THE LIST! It was a beautiful morning for racing at Guasti Regional Park as the Grizzlies came back for an encore performance on one of their "home" courses. Brett Valencia played the role of maestro as he once again answered his critics with a spectacular race. Digging down deep in the last 1/2 mile, he moved from 10th to 3rd in a 200 meter stretch, nearly catching Murrieta Valley's McCutcheon for 2nd place in 14:56. Finishing 3rd overall in the race, he stands as the San Bernardino County Champion, topples the thought-to-be untouchable school record of Scott Harris and runs the 10th fastest time in meet history. In that most-impressive 200 meter stretch, he passed three "California Top 40 Returnees" with relative ease...simply amazing! In other action, Daniel Hawkins faced little resistance in the Frosh race, winning easily although his time suffered from a lack of competition. On the girls side, the Grizzlies finished 7th in the Sweepstakes race, led by a school record run by Lexie Bravo. Her 18:09 bettered Brianna Bentley's school record by an impressive 9 seconds. Not pleased with her finishing place, let me add some perspective. Before today, her time would have been the 9th fastest ever run in meet history, but the depth on the girls' side left her 15th fastest for today alone!!! Meet records were completely rewritten in 2007!!! Congratulations also to Melissa Edwards, Elle Farrar and Alyssa Scheidemantle for running onto the "Top 15" list in school history. See updated list in "Handouts." Congratulations to the following athletes who were named to various All-County Teams: All-San Bernardino County Team: Brett Valencia (1st) and Lexie Bravo (6th) All-County Freshman Team: Daniel Hawkins (3rd) and Elle Farrar (6th) All-County Junior Team: Lexie Bravo (1st) and Melissa Edwards (5th) All-County Senior Team: Brett Valencia (1st) and Anna Edwards (7th) Complete Results: Boys Sweepstakes (92 total runners): 3. BOYS ASSAULT TOP 10 LIST; BRAVO SETS SCHOOL RECORD Wednesday's Baseline League Meet at Red Hill Park brought out the best in some and unfortunately another trip to San Antonio Hospital. After finishing, Hannah Haerr had difficulty reestablishing normal breathing and headed to the hospital as a precaution. Sinus and allergy issues combined with a maximum effort left her weak. She is resting comfortably at home and should be back in school next week, and knowing Hannah, will be frantic waiting for doctor's clearance so she can run at her favorite course...Mt. SAC! The girls JV got things rolling with a breakthrough performance by freshman Elle Farrar. She won the race by a large margin and ran the 10th fastest time in school history on the Red Hill course. Alejandra Lugo ran her best race of the year in aggressive fashion, finishing 4th. Overall, the JV girls had our best finish of the day (2nd). The JV boys let the race get away from them early and then found themselves trapped coming down Vineyard. By the time the course opened up there was only so much "moving up" they could do. Roman Scott led the way, running 17:36. The girls varsity could not match the success they enjoyed at Guasti. While we improved up front, our fifth scoring position was 28th as compared to 16th at Guasti. This lack of pack running allowed Claremont to slip in front of the Grizzlies as well as Upland. Lexie Bravo continued her emergence as an elite runner, this time running away from the field and winning in school record time. Melissa Edwards also ran a fine race, moving up to 6th after finishing 10th at Guasti. She moves to #4 all time at Red Hill. The boys welcomed back Ethan and ran by far the fastest team-time in school history on this course. Despite having the reins on him, Ethan managed to run the 3rd fastest time by a Grizzly here. All five scorers left their mark on the Red Hill Top 10 list, led by a masterful winning effort by Brett Valencia. His win earned him his third picture in a week in the Brett Valencia Daily Bulletin! The team closed the gap on Rancho and Upland, finishing 3rd, 10 behind the Cougars and 20 behind the Highlanders. BOYS BREAK TEAM TIME SCHOOL RECORD; STILL WAITING FOR OFFICIAL GIRLS VARSITY TIMES Motivation can come from a variety of sources, but none stronger than someone saying you can't do something. With something to prove, the boys varsity ran to an 8th place finish in the Individual Sweepstakes race on Saturday, lowering the school record for team time by 8 seconds. Proving once again the truth to the message that "every place counts," they were a mere 6 points from finishing in 4th place. On a course that hasn't been kind in the past, all seven set personal records and six of the seven landed on or moved up the LOHS Top 15 All-Time List at Mt.SAC to conquer some demons. The Grizzlies were led by Brett Valencia and Ethan Krizman, both finishing in the top 25 of a loaded field and now rank #2 and #3 all time at Mt. SAC. Daniel Hawkins shattered the frosh school record as well. All this after a rigorous week of practice as the team prepares for League Finals. In other races, Joe Lopez made an impressive debut, just missing the Top 15 list while strong performances were delivered by Daniel Niewenhuizen, Scott Aylor, Erik Strong, Roberto Leon and Scott Palti. The varsity girls finished a very respectable 16th out of 30 in a tough race. Lexie continued her incredible racing, but her school record on this course will have to wait a couple of weeks. She missed it by 3 seconds, but became only the second Grizzly to break 19 on the Mt.SAC course. Taking the five best times, our team time ranks 3rd all-time in school history. Two of those times were in the frosh race, as Elle Farrar and Tori Greaves led the team to a 4th place finish, putting themselves at #8 and #12 respectively in school history. Also racing well were Megan Bruno and Victoria McNamara. Results (will complete when they come available): Boys Individual Sweepstakes (8th of 21 teams): 13. Thursday, November 1 BOTH TEAMS ADVANCE TO CIF!!! GIRLS GIVE UPLAND A RUN; BRETT SCORES THE HAT TRICK! Returning to Mt. SAC for the Baseline League Finals after two years at Glen Helen, the Grizzlies accomplished what they needed to advance to the post-season. Many fine performances were distributed throughout the day, but none finer than Brett Valencia's third victory in as many league races this season. Following directions to utilize his speed and strength at the end of the race, he never led until the final meters in winning the Baseline League Championship. A fine example of hard work and discipline, most find it hard to believe he was 16th in this same race a year ago! Other medal winners included Ethan Krizman and Daniel Hawkins as the varsity boys wrapped up 3rd place in the league. The varsity girls ran very solid up front as Lexie Bravo, Anya Watford and Melissa Edwards finished in All-Baseline League positions, taking 4, 5 and 6 overall in the race. Running after the Highlanders, as they did last year, they came up a point short...but this year that point did not matter as the Grizzlies needed Claremont to beat Upland as well to win the league title. A point ahead of Upland or a point behind, it still results in a 2nd place finish in league. A great effort by the girls today. The JV Girls also made a run at Upland, coming up 6 points shy. Elle Farrar dominated the race in running the #6 all-time mark in school history at 19:44. Madison Melton finished 3rd, Alice Zayer in 5th and Hannah Haerr ran to 9th to pace the Grizzlies. Newcomer Joe Lopez, in just his second race, paced the JV Boys as he finished 13th. They tied Claremont for third, but lost out on the 6th runner. VARSITY GIRLS: TEAM - 1. Upland - 52; 2. Saturday, November 10 GRIZZLIES RACE STRONG AT CIF!!! GIRLS BREAK SCHOOL RECORD; BOYS SHOW WELL WITHOUT ETHAN A beautiful day awaited the varsity teams at Mt.SAC and they performed very well. The girls led off the day in Race 1 and were seeded 9th in the race. Lexie Bravo, despite painful shin-splints, broke 19 for the second time to lead the team. PR's by Anya Watford, Melissa Edwards and Alice Zayer allowed the girls to defeat two teams seeded ahead of them as they finished 7th with a school record of 98:54. Some of the girls were on the 2005 team that held the previous record of 99:07 which resulted in a 4th place finish...today's super effort only good for 7th, a tribute to the strength of Division 1 girls cross country this season. The boys came in seeded 8th in the race and finished in that exact spot...the difference being that the seeding included Ethan and today's race did not. As it turned out, today's effort was the third best in school history and subbing in Ethan would have resulted in a new school record by a large margin. Brett Valencia continued his consistency at Mt.SAC, while Daniel Hawkins and Chris Delgado had huge PR's to pace the team. Congratulations to the athletes for their hard work all season and for a very positive finish to the '07 season. The coaching staff is very proud of both teams and look forward to even "better things" in '08! Please remember that the off-season is approaching, which includes 2 weeks mandatory rest (cross training okay), followed by lowering the mileage and beginning again as we gear up for track season (vital for your development in cross country!). Those who have asked about weights and strength work, now is the time to begin, with primary focus on the upper body. We look forward to celebrating this season's successes at our banquet on December 13th...see info below. RESULTS: BOYS: Team - 8th of 18 teams (83:19); Individuals - 11. Brett Valencia - 15:42; 31.
