JULY NEWS AND NOTES!!!

Mandatory Parent Meeting  -  The annual informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 22nd in the LOHS Lecture Hall (just north of Admin main entrance) at 7:00pm.  It's a great chance to get your questions answered about the sport and the season.  Carlos Delgado from the Los Angeles Times will be on hand to kick off our new fundraiser.  Hope to see everyone there!

Hydration  -  The heat has finally arrived!  Now is the time to pay close attention to your fluid intake.  Water, water and more water, all throughout the day, even when you are not thirsty.  Also, be sure to replace electrolytes with Gatorade type drinks.

Logging Miles  -  You are required to log miles this summer for a few reasons:  1. So the coaches can see what you are doing (or not doing)...we have found some tend to overdo it based on the experience they have,  2.  500 Mile club is determined by only logged miles, and 3. Logging your miles motivates you to run.  Here are the directions to the free website:

1 Go to this Free Web Site: www.running2win.com.
2.Register yourself with a username and password and some other basic information.
3.Once you've registered, click on the link within the site to "join a team." Find "Los Osos H.S." listed and click on it. You will be asked if you'd like to request access. That sends an email to Coach Mike who will grant you access.
Fill out your mileage daily!!

Unsure of your mileage???  Go to Google Earth, click on the ruler icon in the toolbar above the image...when the window opens, click on Path, then measure your route and it keeps a running total of mileage!

Meet Schedule  -  For your planning purposes, the meet schedule for this season appears as a "Handout" or you can browse through the calendar.

Captains Thank-You  -  I want to thank the captains for taking an aggressive approach to organizing off-season practices during the three-week dead period.  Thanks for taking time out of your summer to improve the team.

Physicals  -  If you have not done so, you need to schedule a physical with your doctor (no more chiropractors).  Pick up the districts' physical packet from school to take with you.  When everything is complete, hang on to it until the first day of practice and bring it with you.  DO NOT TURN IT INTO THE SCHOOL!  No athlete will be allowed to practice until the coaches have your physical packet.  If you took the physical at school, I will gather the forms for you.

Summer Practice  -  Official practice begins on Monday, July 20th at 8:00am at the stadium...please be prompt.  Practice will be Mondays at 8:00am at school, Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00pm at Heritage Park (Beryl and Hillside).  Visit the website frequently for any practice changes to times and locations.  Do your best to attend as many as possible to assure your placement in 6th Period PE and to increase your chances to make the Morro Bay trip.  No physical...no practice!

Incentives  -  We are again planning the overnight trip to Morro Bay and the two night trip to the Stanford Invitational.  Morro Bay is for the 40 athletes that attend the most summer practices regardless of ability.  Stanford is for the top 7 girls and boys as determined at the Woodbridge Invitational.  Work hard this summer!

Incoming 9th Graders  -  It's time to begin conditioning yourself for the season.  Your goal is to be able to run 3-4 miles comfortably by the time practice begins.  Build up slowly and follow the training calendar in the "Handouts."  You will be contacted prior to practice if I have your information;  email me if I don't have your info.  Get your physical taken care of and get ready to enjoy a great transition into high school.  We look forward to working with you.

Returning Members  -  If you ran last year and are coming back, but did not attend the meeting in June, please email me to let me know you are returning.  There are many I have not heard from.

INTRODUCING YOUR 2009 CAPTAINS!!!

Saturday, June 13
Scott Aylor

Scott Aylor  -  Scott enters his fourth season in the program and as a two-time Most Improved award winner, he is a great example of hard work paying off.  Scott has a great attitude and a strong desire to better himself as a person and a runner.  After working his way up to a varsity position in the middle of last season, he was not content to settle there;  he continues to work hard to be the best he can.  He also stepped up as a leader during this past track season which helped secure his position as a captain.

Monday, June 22
Elle Farrar

Elle Farrar  -  Elle is our only returning captain and is just a junior.  After being restricted to JV her freshman year, Elle settled into the team's number 2 spot for most of the season before taking over as the number 1 runner for the last three meets of the season.  This very talented runner proved to be a very capable captain as a sophomore, earning the respect of upperclassmen as well as those in her own grade level.  An outstanding student, an outstanding runner and an outstanding leader!

Monday, June 22
Daniel Hawkins
Daniel Hawkins  -  Talented runners of Daniel's caliber come along very infrequently and the Grizzlies are fortunate to have him.  A clear leader based on ability on this team, Daniel has been one of the top performers in the state of California in his grade level each of his first two years at Los Osos.  He has matured into a very coachable young man that is not afraid to work hard to achieve his goals.  Daniel has also started to mature as a vocal leader for the team and we look forward to him leading this team in both ways as a junior this year and as always...with a smile on his face!

Monday, June 22
Alejandra Lugo
Alejandra Lugo  -  Alejandra is entering her fourth year in our program and is looking towards making her senior season her best.  As a former Rookie of the Year and Most Inspirational award winner, she has the makings of being a fine captain.  Not only is she talented and intelligent, but she brings that hard-nosed toughness that all coaches love.  Never shy about speaking her mind, we look forward to her intensity spreading throughout this team.

LEXIE'S A RUNNIN' REBEL!!!

MICHELLE ANUMBA SIGNS WITH DUKE

Today was National Signing Day for high school athletes and Los Osos had 11 participate in the ceremony.  Michelle Anumba, our outstanding versatile track athlete, will attend Duke University in North Carolina.  Her 2nd place finish in the shot put at last year's state meet made her a hot commodity.

Cross country's own Lexie Bravo signed her letter of intent to compete at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.  She loved her visit and was very impressed by the coach and we wish both her and Michelle the best;  their hard work and dedication has certainly paid off.

If any of our other seniors have made up their mind and are going to compete, make sure you let us know.
