ASA NATIONAL QUALIFIER VS RAW 7/10/05
This game has been the topic of conversation in the fast pitch area of Southern California due to the controversy in the game between The Long Beach Black Sox and Raw on July 10,2005 for the final berth to the ASA C Nationals in Stockton. I am here to clarify exactly what took place and set the record straight since I was directly involved.
John Otte who was on third base was called out in the bottom of the 9th with no outs and the Black Sox trailing by 2 runs by a score of 11-9. Fred Hanker went out to get an explanation on why Otte was called out. The third base umpire stated it was a circle violation and that Otte was off the base when the pitcher Jerome Clark had the ball in the circle while the catcher was not behind the plate and the home plate umpire had not even put his mask on. When Hanker asked the 3rd base umpire where Otte was standing he literally walked over and stood about 3-4 inches from the bag.
As Otte was on second the ball got away from the catcher Otte went to 3rd and rounded the bag and stopped. He is in a neutral position where the play is still alive because the catcher and the umpire were not in their position. He can either go toward the plate or back to third. Being that he did neither the umpire assumed and called him out. He should only be called out if he is in the position while a pitch is being delivered and this is not the case here. The umpire made a decision which was wrong in calling Otte out because he said he counted to 5 seconds and the home plate umpire informed me during our discussion and debate that the 3rd base umpire told him he counted to 10 seconds. So the discussion I had with the 2 umpires after they had their meeting were 2 different stories. Last I checked there is no time clock in softball or baseball. It’s the only major sport without a clock.
This is why I didn’t leave the field right away because I didn’t receive a straight answer. A call made of this magnitude in this type of championship caliber game deserves a clear cut explanation. The umpires response was “that’s enough”. I responded “enough of what 2 different responses from 2 different umpires”. The argument continued and I still was never provided with a legitimate reason. As I was walking off the field I approached the home plate umpire and told him “your stories don’t match up.” He replied,”that’s enough coach”. “I said enough of what not getting a straight answer. You guys cant seem to get things straight here.” At that point I was ejected from the game. At no time was profanity used by Fred Hanker or myself.
In response to the ASA write up of the game on the ASA web site. I was asked to go out to find out what had happened. When the umpires asked for only 1 person to speak, manager Fred Hanker turned it over to me being I have experience coaching at the highest levels in the ISC the last 2 years. I have a great deal of respect for umpires. I have always treated them with respect but I expect that in return from them. I have noticed over the years umpires have limited coaches to go out and talk to them in questioning a call. They seem to have this stigma of not wanting coaches to come out and discuss any call. If so you are subject to being thrown out right away. The umpire that threw out John Otte, Fred Hanker and myself wasn’t even the same umpire who made the call in this particular game. Players have a duty for proper sportsmanship, but that does not give umpires the right to confront players. In the letter it states I was asked repeatedly by my team to leave the field and that was not the case at all. They as I do deserve to know why the call was made and a proper explanation of the call and we got neither. In my opinion if you are going to hold players to a certain standard of conduct than the umpires in return should be held to that same standard. To whoever wrote this article, if you are going to call out names of players involved in this incident, and you are using their names in a negative aspect, you should also name the umpires involved and sign your name to this article.

DUO GIVES UP 15 RUNSSOX CAPTAIN LOPES PUT ON HOT SEAT!!!!
|
I RECENTLY SAT DOWN WITH SOX CAPTAIN DALE LOPES AND PUT HIM ON THE HOT SEAT
1) WHAT GOT YOU STARTED IN FAST PITCH? I started playing in a summer league program and I progressed to various city leagues. This eventually lead to travel leagues, national and world competition.
2) WHO WERE YOU IDOLS GROWING UP? Being athletic my whole life I grew up idolizing Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente and George Brett. I was fortunate enough to see how they played the game. My biggest idol has to be my mother. After losing my dad at the age of 1, my mom has always been there for me despite all the setbacks she has encountered. (3 bouts with cancer and currently bone cancer). She continues to battle everyday and she has taught me to do the same.
3) WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN FAST PITCH? Winning the 1995 NAFA World Tournament at the B level. Most recently hitting a walk off 2 run home run in the bottom of the 7th with the score tied to win the game in the Beaumont 4th of July tournament.
WORST MOMENT? Losing the 2002 NAFA World Tournament from the winners bracket with Team Rainey.
FUNNIEST MOMENT? In a game I was catching years ago the runner on 1st was stealing. Randy Clay our pitcher turned and bent down trying to get out of the way. I hit Randy in the butt with the throw. The umpire asked Randy if he was alright. Randy responded, ” ask him”. I told Randy to never wear his bulls eye underwear again.
4) HOW DID YOU GET UR START IN MODELING? My photographer back in 1980 was shooting for a magazine. The magazine people saw my photos and hired me to be in their magazine.
5) TELL US ABOUT SOME OF YOUR MODELING SUCCESSES? I did mostly print work, magazines, catalogs, C&R Clothiers, and live runway and fashion shows.
6) WHICH PITCHERS GIVE YOU THE MOST TROUBLE? My modeling pictures Fred put on the internet. This space is too small to list all the pitchers.
WHICH PITCHERS HAVE YOU HAD SUCCESS AGAINST? This space is too big not very many.
7) YOU RECENTLY GOT ENGAGED DESCRIBE HOW THAT WENT? It was awesome. I took Tammy to the Grand Canyon which she thought was for her birthday. I proposed to her the next day at Hopi Point overlooking the canyon. You can’t describe in one word the experience. I see why it is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.
8) HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE LONG BEACH BLACK SOX? Fred Hanker talked to be about getting a team together. He asked me to help out and I agreed to join him. At the time we both had taken a 6 year sabbatical from playing. I was getting the itch to play again. I had just completed my 4th year as Team Rainey’s head coach. There were rumors that they might fold. I never heard from them about coming back so I told Fred I was 100% in with the Sox and let’s do it.
9) WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR RESPONSIBLITIES AS CAPTAIN OF THE SOX? I have been very fortunate to have some great baseball coaches in the past. I have learned from the best. I have made a mold from what I have learned with, my knowledge of the game, and have offered to teach and demonstrate to the younger players. I take pride in working with the younger guys on how to prepare and how to handle certain situations. I also help Fred with decision making and anything related to on field management.
10) WHAT ARE YOUR SOFTBALL GOALS FOR 2005? My main goal is to win a National Championship in Stockton. My softball goals are to be a productive player, a good teammate and to help the team win.
11) I AM GOING TO ASK YOU A SERIES OF QUESTIONS RELATING TO YOUR SOX TEAMMATES. SOME ARE FOR FUN AND SOME ARE SERIOUS. ANSWER WITH THE 1 NAME WHO YOU BEST THINK FITS THE QUESTION. SINCE I HAVE KNOWN YOU A LONG TIME YOU CANNOT USE ME AS ANY OF THE ANSWERS.
• WHICH PLAYER IS MOST LIKELY TO MAKE YOU LAUGH? John Otte
• WHICH PLAYER WOULD YOU WANT ON YOUR SIDE IN A FIGHT? Benny Guerrero (I have to stick with us old guys and it doesn’t hurt to have a black belt either)
• WHICH PLAYER HAS THE BEST WORK ETHIC? Brett Semans
• WHICH PLAYER COULD YOU BEAT IN A RACE? Anyone with a broken leg
• WHICH PLAYER’S PERSONALITY IS MOST LIKE YOURS? Dan Fleming and Brett Semans
• IF THE GAME IS ON THE LINE WHICH PLAYER WOULD YOU WANT AT THE PLATE? Chris Minogue
• WHICH PLAYER DO YOU HAVE THE MOST RESPECT FOR? Chuck Vranich ( I have to stick with another old guy who has been around the game a long time)
• IN A CRISIS SITUATION WHICH PLAYER IS MOST CALM? Dave Hanker ( Need I say more)
• WHICH PLAYERS YOU THINK RESPECT YOU MOST? Damian Guerrero, Andy Martinez and Chuck Chaple I think younger players respond to me well and I hope they can benefit from my experience.
• WHICH PLAYER IS MOST LIKELY TO MISS A SIGN? This team this year hasn’t had that problem. It was a bigger problem last year and I hope were over it.
• WHICH PLAYER IS MOST LIKELY TO WEAR THE WRONG UNIFORM? Cesar from last year but he isn’t with us anymore. John Otte wears the wrong hat sometimes.
• WHICH PLAYER IS MOST LIKELY TO BE LATE TO A GAME, PRACTICE OR MEETING? Marcel Bernal but I know he has to come from Corona so he has a good excuse.
• WHICH PLAYER IS MOST LIKELY TO HAVE A DIRTY UNIFORM AFTER A GAME? John Otte he is always tumbling.
• WHICH PLAYER IS MOST LIKELY TO THROW HIS BAT? Brett Semans He plays with so much intensity he hates to fail if he does heads up!!!!
• WHICH PLAYER IS MOST LIKELY TO ARGUE WITH THE UMPIRE? Excluding Fred and myself this is a tough one. We have a good group of guys. Maybe Randy Clay if he felt his strike zone was getting pinched
• WHICH PLAYER IS LEAST LIKEY TO ARGUE WITH THE UMPIRE? Andy Martinez
• IF YOU STARTED A TEAM AND COULD TAKE 1 PLAYER WHO WOULD IT BE? Damian Guerrero He is up and coming and in his prime and can pitch if needed.
• WHICH PLAYER IS MOST WILLING TO HELP OTHER PLAYERS? Dan Fleming Dan has accepted a lesser role and has been more than willing to help out other players. He is also great at reading defenses ( that’s an inside joke)
12) I AM GOING TO ASK YOU A SERIES OF QUESTIONS DIRECTLY RELATING TO YOU AND YOUR LIFESTYLE?
• FAVORITE FOODS? Tammy’s Organic cooking / Italian
• FAVORITE MUSIC GROUPS? The Doors / Chicago / The Guess Who
• FAVORITE DRINKS? Vitamin Water / Wine
• FAVORITE ACTORS/ACTRESSES? Al Pacino / Robert De Niro / Raquel Welch / Halle Berry
• FAVORITE VACATION SPOT? Hawaii and Banff, Canada
• FAVORITE THING TO DO IN SPARE TIME? Spend time with Tammy
• IF YOU COULD MEET 1 PERSON PAST OR PRESENT? George Patton
• IF YOU COULD HAVE A DREAM JOB WHAT WOULD IT BE? Professional Athlete
• IF YOU COULD HAVE A DREAM CAR WHAT WOULD IT BE? Ferrari Convertable
• IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD WHERE WOULD IT BE? Australia
13) HOW MUCH LONGER TO YOU ANTICIPATE PLAYING FAST PITCH? As long as I can help contribute to my team’s success. That’s assuming they want me back.
14) AFTER YOUR DONE PLAYING FAST PITCH DO YOU WANT TO STAY INVOLVED IF SO WHAT CAPACITY? I would like to be a head or an assistant coach with Team USA, an ISC team, and men’s or girl’s fastpitch.
DALE LOPES YOUR OFFICIALLY OFF THE HOT SEAT!!!!!
