2007 MVP Ron Rupp looks to rebound from a 11-11 season. He still led the team in 11 pitching categories including a 3.26 ERA. He once again will be the Sox ace and is moving up quickly in Sox all time pitching categories. Randy Clay the Sox all time wins leader had another solid season in 07. Clay was 3-2 with a 5.28 ERA. Dave Blackburn comes off a great rookie 2008 season with Long Beach. Blackburn finished 6-3 with a 4.11 ERA. Todd Budke adds depth and versatility as a starter or closer.
The Sox had the best defensive infield in the league again in 2008. The best middle infield in Southern California just got better with the addition of Jason Obregon and Chris Paiiva. Obregon and his career .586 Sox average will take over at shortstop. Paiiva is very versitile and will fill in at 2nd, SS, and 3rd base. The Sox loose Andy Martinez for 2009 but but gold glover Chris returns. Chris Martinez has won 2 gold gloves for The Sox.Todd Budke and his world class bat will also play on a limited basis again at 3rd and 1st. He holds several Sox hitting records and is a career .509 hitter for Long Beach. Recent signings for 2009 were a pair of veteran brothers in Ken and Doug Shaw. Ken will help bolster 2nd and 3rd base. He played for the Sox in Carson City and is a career .300 hitter for Long Beach. Doug Shaw is a veteran power hitting 1st baseman who adds great power from the left side of the plate. Chris Minogue could see more time at 1st after another fantastic 2008 season. Minogue is 2nd in many all time hitting categories for Long Beach. Ron Rupp will play 3rd and 1st when not pitching. He is a career .411 hitter for The Sox.
The Sox outfield is littered with big bats. Chris Minogue, Dave Demaio and Fred Hanker have played the bulk of the games in the last few years and they are looking for a break. Hanker leads the Sox in almost every career stat. he is a career .442 for Long Beach with 36 Hr and 218 RBI. Minogue is a well respected veteran hitter and in the top 5 in all the Sox career stats. he is a career .418 hitter with 20 Hr and 148 RBI. Demaio will be back again in right field. Dave is a career .292 hitter with 6 Hr and 24 RBI. The Sox welcome newcomer Josh Persell a former USC baseball player to play center field. he has blazing speed and a rocket arm. He has a great work ethic and desire as he walked on and made the USC baseball team. Recently signed brothers Kasey and Matt Shaw bring a lot of youth, speed and talent to an aging Sox outfield. The Shaw's come over from The Hustlers with their fathers. Nathan Hanker could steal some time in the outfield after 15 at bats in his rookie season.
The catching duties look to fall to Fred Hanker and newcomer Carlos Romero. Fred Hanker who caught about 75 % of the games in 08 will split with Romero. He recently lost 50 pounds in the off season and is primed to catch as much as needed. Carlos Romero impressed Hanker enough in Beaumont to sign him for the 2009 season. Romero hit .417 in Beaumont and brings a grit and determination to the club.
