THE RANKINGS EXPLAINED
May 15, 2012
As always, there are questions about how Minor League Football determines the National Rankings and, of course, whether they are fair or not. So, in the spirit of responding to a few critics, I am writing this article to describe the system as fully as possible. Though we do not share the several mathematical formulae, I will describe the variables used in the computations.
First, a few definitions:
POLL – This is a survey of opinions from within a sample of a certain population. For our purposes, it is a survey of Head Coaches of Minor League Football Teams to determine their opinion of the top 50 AAA and AA rated Minor League Football Teams across the country that are currently participating in either Winter/Spring or Summer/Fall Minor League Football seasons. The result of this poll represents a subjective rating of the teams across the country.
Computer Rankings – The Minor League Football News Computer rankings is a mathematical model that analyzes the results of Minor League Football Games played around the country and provides objective ratings for each team. For the purposes of rating Minor League Football Teams, there are actually three separate computer models applied to the rating of the teams and an effective average of those models is used to rank each of them. Again, the result of this computer model represents an objective rating of the teams across the country.
MLFCS Rankings – The Minor League Football Championship Series (MLFCS) is the final National Rankings that applies the results of the Minor League Football Coach’s Poll and the Minor League Football News Computer Rankings to determine a simple average. This average is then assigned an ordinal rank relative to each team starting with the team with the highest average ranking earning the #1 position.
