HOME OF LODI HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

THANKS TO THE PLAYERS AND PARENTS FOR A GREAT 2009 SEASON.  HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY SEASON.  PLAY WHEN YOU CAN, AND HOPE FOR A SHORT WINTER!

 LODI FINISHES FOURTH AT SECTIONALS

Facing top competition, the tennis team wrapped up their season on Wednesday at the Whitewater sectional tournament.  Briana Kleinfeldt and Jessica Timmons played very well, but could not overcome their opponents from Big Foot, losing a close match 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the #1 doubles flight.  Jessica Fredrick and Phoebe Mogharei bounced back from a semifinal loss to a duo from McFarland to capture third place with a 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2 win over Waupun in the #2 doubles flight.  Kortney Koch and Jenny Escher (#3 doubles), and Olivia Gallagher (#4 singles) fought hard but dropped two matches and settled for fourth place.  As a team, Lodi finished fourth out of 18 teams, with only Edgewood, McFarland, and Ripon having more points.

The team finished 9-3 in dual matches, won the Lodi Quad tournament, and came in second in both the conference and in the regional tournament.

LODI NETTERS ADVANCE TO SECTIONALS

Seven of the ten Lodi varsity tennis players advanced to the sectional tournament after regional play in Lodi on Monday.  Moving on were all three doubles teams and #4 singles.  Needing to win only one match, the top seeded 1 doubles team of Briana Kleinfeldt and Jessica Timmons wasted no time in closing out a Sparta team that moved down from division 1 this year, 6-1. 6-0.  Also earning the top seed in their flight, the 2 doubles team of Phoebe Mogharei and Jessica Fredrick justified their seed, beating Wayland Academy 6-0, 6-0, and Ripon, 6-1, 6-4.  The second-seeded 3 doubles team of Jenny Escher and Kortney Koch found the” zone” in completing Lodi’s  doubles sweep, overcoming Wayland Academy 6-3, 6-1, before overwhelming Ripon 6-2, 6-0.  Wrapping up the scoring for Lodi, top-seeded 4 singles player Olivia Gallagher swept by her opponent from Wisconsin Dells, 6-0, 6-2, before finishing her day with a dominating win over Viroqua, 6-1, 6-0.

At #1 singles for Lodi, Emily Wimmer had the most thrilling match of the day, coming from a set behind to outlast her opponent from Wayland Academy, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.  Unfortunately, the top-seeded player from Viroqua ended Wimmer’s season in her next match.  At 2 singles, Holly Hargis could not surmount illness and a staunch opponent from Mauston, dropping her match 6-2,6-3.  Similarly, Haley Hesse at 3 singles fell to a tough Wayland player, 6-3, 6-0.

As a team, Ripon finished the day with 18 points, Lodi took second with 14 points, followed by Columbus with 12.  Mauston, Viroqua, and Waupun each took 8 points, Wayland Academy had 4, and Sparta and Wisconsin Dells had 2.

Next up for Lodi is the sectional tournament in Whitewater on Wednesday where they will test their skills against teams from Madison Edgewood, McFarland, Lake Mills, East Troy, Big Foot/Williams Bay, Jefferson, Whitewater, Watertown Luther Prep, and Edgerton.

Lodi Takes Second Place at Conference Tournament

The Lodi tennis team failed to pull of a miracle onSaturday, but all players won matches and Olivia Gallagher emerged asconference champion at #4 singles. Needing to win the tournament and have Lake Mills finish third in orderto win the conference championship, Lodi had to play perfect tennis and hopethat other teams helped their cause. At the end of the day, the Lake Mills team put an exclamation point on theircommanding season by winning the conference tournament with 24 points, andearning championships at #1 and #2 singles, and #2 and #3 doubles.  Lodi finished second with 17 points inthe tournament, while Watertown Luther Prep and Columbus finished wellback.  Besides Gallagher’schampionship, Lodi took second place medals at #1 doubles (JessicaTimmons/Briana Kleifeldt) and #3 doubles (Kortney Koch/Jenny Escher), andfinished third at #2 singles (Holly Hargis),  #3 singles (Haley Hesse), and #2 doubles (JessicaFredrick/Phoebe Mogharei).  Having byfar the closest matches of the day, Gallagher needed a tie-break game to beat astaunch Columbus foe in the first round, 6-4, 7-6 (4).  She then reprised her Thursday matchagainst Lake Mills, taking 3 hours to win the gold medal 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3.

The team now moves on to the WIAA tournament, hosting theregional tournament in Lodi all day on Monday, October 5th.  Lodi is the 4-time defending regionalchamp, and will defend its title against Columbus, Mauston, Ripon, Sparta,Viroqua, Waupun, Wayland Academy, and Wisconsin Dells.

Lake Mills 5 Lodi 2

Trying to catch up to the conference leader, the Lodi tennisteam shifted the line-up to see if they could steal a win.  The strategy almost worked, but the Lake Mills netters proved too strong on Thursday and took a commandinglead into the conference tournament. Briana Kleinfeldt, playing singles for the first time this year, dominated her match at #2, winning 6-1, 6-3 against the eventual conference champion.  Olivia Gallagher needed more than threehours before taking her #4 singles match, 7-5, 5-7, 7-6(1).  Jessica Fredrick and Phoebe Moghareimoved up to play #1 doubles, but could not prevail in a third set tie-break,losing a heartbreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(4). Other Lodi players fought to the last point, but could break through forwins.  The Lodi JV team completedits undefeated season, squeezing out the win 6-5 as darkness fell.

LODI JV TEAM WINS CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT!

It was a long, hot day, butThe Lodi JV netters refused to wilt on Saturday, and walked away as conferencechampions.  Taking top honors insingles were Hunter Noel at #1, Camryn Kellogg at #2, and Lindsey Veach at #4,while Nicki DeGroff and LeAnne Kramer took top honors at #3 doubles. Taking second place were Kelly Quam at #2 singles and the #2 doubles team ofPaige Cooper and Christina Plunkett. The #1 doubles team of Kim Breunig and Kalli Caldwell came in third.  This is the first JV conferencechampionship for Lodi since 2006.

 Lodi 5 Columbus 2

The Lodi tennis team tookadvantage of Columbus misfortune to collect a Capitol Conference win onThursday.  Missing their #2 and #4singles players due to illness, the strong Columbus team was weakened.  Lodi quickly took advantage.  The Lodi doubles teams of JessicaTimmons/Briana Kleinfeldt (6-1, 6-4) and Jessica Fredrick/Phoebe Mogharei (6-0,6-0) won quickly, as did Haley Hesse at #3 singles (6-2, 6-1).  Olivia Gallagher at #4 singles, tookmore time, before winning 6-3, 6-4. Holly Hargis closed out the scoring with the longest match of the day, dropping the second set before fighting back for a 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 victory.  Emily Wimmer at #1 singles and KortneyKoch/Jenny Escher at #3 doubles played well in defeat.  The Lodi JV team remained undefeated, winning 10-2.

Lodi  4  Watertown Luther Prep 3

Wow.  What a day.  It’s always hard to travel 75 minutes in a bus, and then get out and play tennis 20 minutes after you arrive.  Luther Prep struggled with the task when they were in Lodi a few weeks ago, and the Lodi squad suffered the same fate on their visit to WLP yesterday.  While continuing to play at a high level, Emily Wimmer couldn’t solve this year’s top player, Emily Pearson, and lost 6-2, 6-2.  The #1 doubles team of Timmons/Kleinfeldt also fell quickly, losing to the WLP team of Leyrer and Free as they continued a stellar season (their only loss this season has been to a top Monroe team).  The #2 doubles team of Fredrick/Mogharei suffered from illness, and could not overcome a motivated WLP team that came ready to play.  Down 3-0, and needing to win the final four matches, the remaining Lodi varsity players slowly started to turn things around.  Haley Hesse came out firing on all cylinders, and dominated her match, getting Lodi’s first point.  Holly Hargis was next to add to the win total.  She dropped her first set 7-5, but then changed tactics and pulled away from her opponent.  The three doubles team of Koch/Escher had a thrilling match.  The first game of their match lasted almost 15 minutes, and another game went to 14 deuce points.  After more than two hours for two sets, the 3’s tied the overall match 3-3.  So it all came down to Olivia Gallagher.  She had to wait until Hesse won her match at 5 p.m. before starting, since WLP only has six courts for the seven varsity matches.  Her opponent was a rapidly improving sophomore with a wicked cross court shot, and very good court coverage.  Fighting fiercely, Olivia still dropped the first set 7-5.  Down 3-2 in the second set, things started to turn around.  All of the other matches had finished, so Olivia and her opponents were alone on the courts, with 26 teammates watching and numerous parents sticking around for the drama.  After eking out a tight 6-4 second set, beating the sun became a factor … the third set started at 6:45, and it would be dark by 7:30.  The final set went back and forth as the competitors struggled to hold serve, until Gallagher held serve to take a 5-3 lead.  Her WLP opponent fought off two match points in the next game, and looked to win a third as she lofted a lob over Olivia’s head.  Stretching as high as she could, though, Gallagher just barely pulled off a sharply angled overhead, and the fans erupted in cheers.  It was 7:20.  Olivia did not know that her point clinched the match for the team until after the match.  A great win for the team, and exciting for the fans.  Not to be outdone by the varsity, though, the JV’s had already won their match 8-5 to remain undefeated.  A top Columbus team visits tomorrow (Thursday) on senior night, intent on upsetting Lodi.  You can expect more thrills for sure.

GIRLS TENNIS TEAM TRIUMPHS IN TOURNAMENT

Onalaska Luther, Ripon, and Waupun all visited Lodi for a full day of tennis on Saturday.  After almost eight hours of tennis in the hot sun, the players were barely standing … but Lodi refused to give in and emerged undefeated on the day.  Beating Ripon 4-3, Waupun 5-4, and Onalaska Luther 4-3, the Lodi team is now 7-2 on the season.  Winning all three matches and a gold medal were Olivia Gallagher at #4 singles, Jessica Timmons and Briana Kleinfeldt at #1 doubles, and Jessica Fredrick and Phoebe Mogharei at #2 doubles.  Despite their success, the day was not without thrills, with Timmons playing the entire third match on a sprained, but taped, ankle, and Fredrick/Mogharei having to win a match tie-break game for their medal in the very last match of the day.  The #3 doubles team of Kortney Koch and Jenny Escher went 2-1 on the day, and Haley Hesse and Holly Hargis were 1-2.

LAKE MILLS 5 LODI 2

In a key conference match up last Thursday of the top two Capitol Conference teams, the Lodi netters fell short to an experienced group from Lake Mills. Sporting eight returning letter winners, the Lake Mills team swept all four singles matches, and upset the strong Lodi doubles team of Mogharei and Fredrick.  The Lodi doubles teams of Timmons/Kleinfeldt and Koch/Escher dominated their matches to take the only points for Lodi on the day.  The Lodi JV team continued their winning ways, beating Lake Mills 8-4 to remain undefeated.

Baraboo Bounces Lodi Netters

The Blue Devil tennis team fought hard against a tough Baraboo team, but came up empty last Thursday losing 7-0.  Playing their third match of the week, most of the Lodi players started a bit slow, and couldn’t catch up.    Holly Hargis, at #2 singles, took the only set for Lodi, but eventually succumbed 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.  The #1 doubles team of Jessica Timmons and Briana Kleinfeldt looked to take revenge on a team that had beaten them earlier in the season.  They came closer, but still couldn’t get over the top, dropping a close 6-3, 6-4 match.  Following suit, The #2 doubles team of Jessica Fredrick and Phoebe Mogharei ran out of time just as they were solving their opponents game, losing a second set tie-break and dropping the match by a 6-1, 7-6 (9) score.  All other Lodi players were competitive, but it was not their day as the #3 doubles team of Kortney Koch and Jenny Escher lost 6-1, 6-4, #1 singles player Emily Wimmer lost 6-1, 6-3, #3 singles Haley Hesse lost 6-3, 6-2, and #4 singles Olivia Gallagher dropped her first match of the season 6-3, 6-1.  The Labor Day holiday couldn’t come soon enough for the varsity.  On a very bright note, the Lodi JV remained undefeated as Hunter Noel took that last match of the day in a tie-break game, and led the team to a 7-5 win.

Lodi Edges Edgerton 5-2

On Tuesday’s beautiful fall afternoon, the Lodi girls tennis team traveled to Edgerton and emerged with a tough win over their long-time rivals from the south.  Edgerton took the early lead as their very strong #1 singles player muscled a 6-0, 6-2 win over Emily Wimmer. Holly Hargis evened the score her own  6-0, 6-2 victory at #2 singles.  Things them quickly fell into place as the closer matches almost all fell Lodi’s way.  Jessica Fredrick and Phoebe Mogharei moved to 7-1 on the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win at #2 doubles, and the #3 doubles eked out a close first set before cruising in the second, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Olivia Gallagher clinched the match for Lodi with a very hard fought 6-4,6-3 win at #4 singles.  It took Haley Hesse a second set tie-break to wrap up her opponent at #3 singles, but she didn’t flinch, winning 6-3,7-6 (5).   The #1 doubles team of Jessica Timmons and Briana Kleinfeldt fell victim to the special scoring  for the day, as their comeback was thwarted in a match tie-break set, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.  The JV’s continued their winning ways, dominating Edgerton 9-2.

Lodi 5 Watertown Luther Prep 2

Lodi extracted a bit of revenge against two-time defending Capitol Conference champs Watertown Luther on Monday.  Having lost to WLP by the slimmest of margins the last two years, this year’s Lodi squad took matters in their own hands by winning three of four singles matches, and two of three doubles matches.  The #2 doubles team of Phoebe Mogharei and Jessica Fredrick won handily 6-2, 6-2, while Kortney Koch and Jenny Escher were even more dominant at #3 doubles, topping their opponents 6-0, 6-2.  Olivia Gallagher continued her winning ways at #4 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win, followed quickly by Haley Hesse’s match-clinching performance at #3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.  Holly Hargis had the closest match of the day at #2 singles, coming from behind in both sets to win 6-4, 6-4.  Emily Wimmer dropped a tough match at #1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, while the #1 doubles team lost a very close contest to a pair of state qualifiers 7-6(2), 6-4.  The Lodi JV team beat Watertown Luther for the first time ever, winning 9-4, and remaining undefeated.

Lodi takes two first place medals at Fort Atkinson Tourney

The Lodi #1 and #2 doubles teams battled top competition at a doubles tournament in Ft. Atkinson on Monday, and emerged with gold medals.  Participants included a Ft. Atkinson team which returns seven starters from the defending Badger South conference champion, and Sauk Prairie, the second place finisher in last year’s Badger North conference.  West Bend West rounded out the teams.

Jessica Timmons and Briana Kleinfeldt dropped an early match to West Bend West, but fought  back to take a nail biter from Sauk 7-6 (0), 7-5, and close out their championship run with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win over Fort at #1 doubles.  Jessica Fredrick and Phoebe Mogharei won all three of their matches to take the #2 doubles crown, although two of the matches went to a match tie-break game.

The #3 doubles team of Kortney Koch and Jenny Escher played almost six hours of tennis in the hot weather, taking one of three matches, but losing a heartbreaker to Sauk, 7-6(6), 7-6(6).

Lodi varsity singles players teamed up as doubles teams for the day, and one JV team doubles team of Stacy Veach and Kate Prosa also participated.  While not gaining any victories, these players improved dramatically by facing the stiff competition.

Lodi Tennis Second at Monroe Tournament

The Lodi varsity tennis team has been playing at the Monroe doubles tournament for decades, but the team recorded their highest finish ever on Saturday.  Showing their depth of talent, and scoring wins at every position, they finished behind Monroe, and tied with Baraboo.  Elkhorn, Burlington, Stoughton, Delavan, and Beloit all trailed the Lodi squad.

The teams of Kortney Koch/Jenny Escher and Haley Hesse/Holly Hargis took second place, while Jessica Fredrick/Phoebe Mogharei finished third.  All went 2-1 for the day.  The team of Jessica Timmons/Briana Kleinfeldt took fourth in the highly competitive #1 spot, and Emily Wimmer/Olivia Gallagher wrapped up the scoring with a sixth place finish.

While all matches were competitive, the most exciting was the Fredrick/Mogharei win over Elkhorn for third place at #2 doubles.  Having dropped the first set 4-6, the team stormed back to take the second 6-1, and force a third set match tie-break game (first team to 10 to win by two).  The lead switched back and forth the entire game, with the Lodi pair fending off numerous match points.  Finally, a serve by Mogharei clinched the marathon, 15-13.

Lodi JV 13, Sauk JV 12

The Lodi JV team took advantage of the good weather to record a close win over the visiting Sauk team on Saturday.  Players competed in both singles and doubles matches during the morning.  Lodi eked out a 9-8 advantage in the singles matches, and the teams split the doubles matches 4-4.  Additional details will follow.

Lodi 4  Portage 3

The Lodi/Portage rivalry continued on Tuesday as Lodi squeaked out a narrow victory over their opponent from the north.  The best matches of the day were at #1 and #3 singles, as Emily Wimmer continued her high level of tennis, but dropped a close match 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.  Haley Hesse’s match at #3 singles was even closer, as she came back against a seasoned player only to lose in a tie-breaker 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (2).  Despite these two losses, and a loss by Holly Hargis at #2 singles (6-2, 6-2), the doubles teams swept their opponents, and freshman Olivia Gallagher won handily at #4 singles 6-1, 6-2.  Timmons and Kleinfeldt took a set to warm up, before solving their opponents 7-5, 6-1.  Fredrick and Mogharei played steadily, cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 win.  Koch and Escher had little problem at #3 doubles, winning 6-1, 6-2.  It was a good early season win against an experienced Portage team featuring nine seniors.  The Lodi Junior Varsity team dominated their Portage opponents, winning 10-1.  All the players learned a great deal today, and will build on the experience as the season progresses

Summary - Whitewater JV Tournament - Saturday, August 15

A deep Lodi JV squad took on seven other teams at a tournament hosted by Whitewater High School.  The event is put on as a fund raiser for Gilda's Club and to promote cancer awareness.  Cancer survivors hit ceremonial first serves at 8 a.m., and all players wore pink shirts and used pink tennis balls during the day.  Lodi fielded a team consisting of two juniors, three sophomores, and five freshmen.  The team record of 11-9 was only bested by Union Grove HS and Westosha Central HS.  Kelly Quam, Camryn Kellogg, and Kalli Caldwell and the doubles teams of Nicki DeGroff/LeAnne Kramer and Paige Cooper/Christina Plunkett all went 2-1 for the day.  The doubles team of Kim Breunig/Hunter Noel came one inch from a second win before dropping the match in a tie-break.  Lindsey Veach played very well at #1 singles, losing two close matches against top competition.  All players had to deal with heat and increasing humidity, but fought tough during their five hours on the courts.  Their results bode well for the rest of the season, as players gained a great deal of experience ... some of them seeing their very first competition ever.

Update for Parents of LHS Tennis Players from Bill Dalrymple – August 13, 2009

What a week of tennis!  Your daughters have worked extremely hard in hot dry weather.  They never complained (well almost never) as we worked them through a lot of stretching, conditioning, matches, and drills.  They have been polite, cooperative, and supportive of one another. Our conditioning goals for the first week were to make the players more flexible, build stronger core muscles, and increase their speed and endurance.  All of these goals decrease the risk of injury, and increase the player’s ability to get to the ball to hit good shots.  I think we were quite successful in attaining those goals.  Be aware, though, that some minor injuries have flared up, including sore muscles, blisters, and in a couple of cases some tendon inflammation.  Please have your daughters make us aware of any medical conditions as they arise (they seem to have been very good about this so far).  Renee Ripp, the school trainer, remains available to address concerns as they arise. We have tried to teach the players exercises and stretches (including yoga) that they can continue to use long after this week’s workouts.  We encourage them to continue to exercise outside of our practices.  Our conditioning will tone down significantly as we move into the match play portion of our schedule, since we just don’t have the time to teach and condition as much.  Remember, flexibility, core strength, and endurance all help avoid injury! Our goals for the “playing” portion of this week’s try-outs were to: define who would play varsity; define which underclassmen would represent the JV’s in the tournaments; and to rank the players according to ability so that we can set up matches and drills that will be challenging and competitive for them.  Please be assured parents, that ALL players are welcome and encouraged to be on the team no matter what their skill level.  We did our best to make this process as fair as possible through a series of ladder matches, bracketed tournaments, and coach-selected challenge matches.  We also recorded our observations on skills as we watched your daughters play.  We are happy to share all of this information with you should you or your daughters have any questions. Finally, a few words on the teaching portion of this week’s practices.  We have introduced a number of drills and games to improve strokes and footwork.  We will spend much of the next two months building on this training, and teaching muscle memory through repetition.  This can sometimes be frustrating.  Please let us know if the frustration overflows at home so that we can address it early and appropriately through more player-specific teaching.  As we mentioned in the orientation program, improved skill is in direct proportion to the amount of time the players put into their practice.  We have had a number of players work beyond the practices this week (hard to believe, but true), and they have seen dramatic improvements in their serves and strokes in only three days.  Hard work equals more success.  What a great lesson!Thank you to all you parents who have had to rearrange schedules to provide rides, suffer through the aches and pains of your daughters as they use muscles they didn’t know they had, and for keeping us informed about any issues that arise.  You are always welcome to email us at lodiwi4@aol.com, or call us at home (576-2373).  This is a GREAT group of young women, and perhaps the strongest team (top to bottom) that we have had in Lodi in a long time.  It has truly been our pleasure to work with them through this, our toughest week.  We look forward to watching them progress as we start playing matches tomorrow!
