13u Dwight Tournament Champs!

The 14u Cougars will play in the Championship game of the WSBL after defeating the Brookfield Sabotage 8-2 on Saturday evening at Kane County Cougar stadium. The Cougars fell behind 2-0 after 1-1/2 innings. The jitters subsided after Taylor O'Donnell cracked a double to the left centerfield gap to lead off the 2nd inning. After Mike Pratl advanced O'Donnell to third with a deep sac fly to center Nick Bratcher ripped a 3-1 pitch to left to score the Cougars first run. In the 4th with the Cougars down 2-1, Brendan Treacy ripped a single to lead off, Jeff Schoenhofen put down a perfect bunt for a single, O'Donnell then walked. Treacy stole home on a fake bunt to tie the game and the Cougars were on their way. Pratl singled to score a run, O'Donnell scored from second on a groundout to deep short and Pratl scored on a base hit by Jake Swenson. Davis Purviance drove a deep double to the left center gap to score Connor Murphy (who singled up the middle) in the 5th. Bratcher was solid in 4 innings (2 unearned runs) on the mound for the win while O'Donnell pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief. The Cougars played sparkling defense overall with great performances by Purviance, Jake Swenson, Jake Gluszek but the key play was turned in by Josh Quade in the 3rd. Runners were on 1st and 2nd with one out. Quade made a running shoestring catch in rightfield on Brookfied's leadoff hitter and threw to Jake Jarzynka at first base for the inning ending double play! The Cougars will play the Championship game on Wednesday (June 29th @10 AM) at beautiful Cougar stadium in Kane County...

Cougars advance to Semi-Finals...

The 14u Cougars advanced to the semi finals of the WSBL playoffs with a 15-5 victory over the Naperville White Sox. The Sox came out swinging and jumped ahead 4-0 after the first half inning. The Cougars never lost their poise as they cut the lead in half after one inning then pushed 7 runs across in the bottom of the second to take control. After a bumpy 1st inning Jake Gluszek settled in to get the win with 4 innings work. Nick Bratcher threw 2 strong shutout innings recording 4 K's. Offensively Bratcher (2 hits, 4 rbi) hit a mommoth 320', 3 run homer in the 4th. Gluszek added 3 rbi, Taylor O'Donnell, Mike Pratl and Brendan Treacy added 2 rbi each.

Cougars in playoff zone!

The 14u Cougars are starting to hit their stride just in time for the WSBL playoffs. The Big Cats opened WSBL action as the #2 seed and took on the North Riverside Chargers in the opening round. The Cougars came away with a 14-4, 5 inning win! Nick Bratcher was outstanding on the mound allowing 1 unearned run on just an infield single while striking out 3 Chargers in 4 innings. The bats were the real story as the Cougars collected 16 hits. Five of those hits were long doubles and Davis Purviance added a triple. Jake Gluszek had 4 rbi on the night. The Cougars meet division rival Naperville White Sox on Saturday at LTHS with the winner advancing to the WSBL final four at Kane County Cougars stadium in Geneva, IL.

I 80 action

The 14u Cougars jumped back into I 80 play on Friday and earned a 5-1 win in Woodridge. Taylor O'Donnell pitched 6 strong innings for the Cougars to earn the win while Jake Gluszek went 3 for 3 and added 3 more rbi.

Cougars earn 2 more WSBL wins...

The 14u Cougars improved to 10-2-1 in WSBL action with 2 victories over the weekend. On Saturday the Cougars came from behind late on the road to defeat the Clarendon Hills Cardinals 10-9. Billy Krawczyk earned the victory with 2-1/3 innings of spectacular relief work, allowing only 1 baserunner and keeping the Cougars within 3 runs to allow for the comeback. Nick Bratcher pitched a scoreless 7th for his 3rd save in a row... Offensively the Cougars were led by Jeff Schoenhofen 4 for 4 (2 doubles) 3 rbi and Davis Purviance 3 for 3 (2 doubles, 3 runs scored). Taylor O'Donnell added 2 hits, scored 3 runs and drove in 3 runs, while Jake Gluszek added 2 hits and 2 rbi. Defensively the Cougars played solid ball and catcher O'Donnell threw out 2 runners trying to steal second. In the 7th, Purviance led off with a walk, Brendan Treacy then put down a perfect sac bunt moving Purviance to 2nd. Schoenhofen then doubled in the winning run with a drive to the gap in right centerfield, leading up to Bratcher's save in the bottom of the inning.

Sunday bounce back!

The Cougars bounced back from a lackluster performance in a first game loss to DuPage on Sunday to defeat the Lisle Hawks 17-5 in 5 innings. The Cougars shook what was ailing them in game one as Nick Bratcher earned the win on the hill. Davis Purviance finished strong on the hill in the final 2 innings. Offensively the EXPLOSION was led by Taylor O'Donnell 3 for 4 (2 doubles, Home run and 6 rbi). O'Donnell hit a blast off the scoreboard in left center some 300 feet away for the dinger and narrowly missed another homer as he hit the fence his next time up to knock in the final 2 runs. Jake Gluszek added 2 monster doubles and 2 rbi, Brendan Treacy scored 3 times and had 3 rbi, Purviance and Jeff Schoenhofen each had rbi's and scored twice, Jake Jarzynka and Josh Quade both stroked 2 hits and scored twice each while Billy Krawczyk scored twice and Mike Pratl knocked in two runs during the barrage...

14u Cougars finish 2nd at Winfield....

The 14u Cougars finished 2nd at the Winfield Wolves Memorial Day Tournament. Rain washed out Saturday and Sunday's games for the Cougars entire bracket so going into Monday the best of the 4 teams in Pool B would advance to the Title game. By the time the Cougars late afternoon games started Finish Strong Force was on top with a 2-0 record (5 runs allowed). The Cougars would need to go 2-0 and allow less than 5 runs. Both Cougar opponents were playing the spoiler role. Taylor O'Donnell (5-1) got the nod in game one against West Chicago and was brilliant pitching the shutout and allowing only 2 singles. Nick Bratcher earned the save with 2 shutout innings (3 k's). Jake Swenson had the only Cougar rbi while O'Donnell scored from 3rd on a heads up play when a Cougar was picked off first base, O'Donnell streaked home and the Cougar runner was ultimately safe at 2nd, the Cougars were victorious 2-0. In game two against Wheatland Jake Gluszek (4-2) earned the win pitching 4  dominant, scoreless innings while Bratcher earned his 2nd save in consecutive games. Gluszek allowed 2 hits while striking out 5 Ducks. O'Donnell and Swenson again provided the rbi's (one each) while O'Donnell again scored from 3rd base on another heads up play. Wheatland tried to pick off a Cougar at 2nd base and without hesitation "T" made them pay by streaking home with the Cougars 2nd run. O'Donnell later ripped a single to center to score Jeff Schoenhofen with an insurance run. The Cougars won 3-1 and advanced to the championship as the top seed having allowed only one run in pool play! Playing in their 3rd consecutive game of the day the Cougars were defeated by a strong, rested and deep Batavia team for the title. The Cougars were lead by Nick Bratcher and Jeff Schoenhofen (2 rbi each and a double each). Davis Purviance went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a double and Jake Gluszek added an rbi. The Cougars ran out of steam at the end but as usual NEVER gave in! For the day, the Cougars played outstanding team defense behind some incredible pitching performances and left Winfield with loads of hard earned respect.

14u Cougars open at home....

Finally the weather cooperated enough to allow the Cougars to play a home game on May 22nd. The Cougars defeated the Plainfield Jaguars 13-4 in I-80 competition behind Taylor O'Donnell's pitching (4-1) and a ton of offensive production from several players. Mike Pratl and Jake Jarzynka had 2 rbi each, Davis Purviance went 3 for 3 (2 runs) Jake Gluszek, O'Donnell and Billy Krawczyk all scored twice each, Krawczyk and Nick Bratcher both had 2 hits while O'Donnell, Pratl, Jarzynka and Connor Murphy all had doubles...

In game two on Opening Day the Cougars hosted the Elmhurst Cougars in WSBL action. The Cougars improved to 7-1-1 in league play with a 13-2, 5 inning victory. Nick Bratcher earned the win highlighted by pitching out of a bases loaded no out jam in the 2nd inning. Bratcher struck out 3 consecutive hitters and the Cougars grabbed the momentum and raced to victory. Jake Gluszek paced the attack going 3 for 3 (3 rbi) while Jeff Schoenhofen, Bratcher and Jake Swenson all added 2 rbi each.

Home Sweet Home...

The Cougars improved to 8-1-1 in WSBL and 3-0 at home on Tuesday May 24th by defeating the Naperville White Sox 11-0 in a 5 inning game. Jake Glusek was strong on the mound with 8 strikeouts in 4 innings for the shutout win, while Billy Krawczyk pitched a scoreless 5th in mop up action. Jeff Schoenhofen was 2 for 2 (2 doubles) on the day with 3 rbi and 2 runs scored. Taylor O'Donnell went 2 for 3 (triple) 3 rbi, Gluszek 2 for 3 (triple) 2 runs and an rbi. Krawczyk went 1 for 1 with 2 rbi and Davis Purviance scored 3 times from the leadoff spot. The Cougars have outscored opponents 37-6 at home having played a total of 15 innings and only 13 offensive innings...

Cougars hitting clinic!

The 14u Cougars continued their torrid hitting pace on Tuesday evening at beautiful Benedictine University. The Cougars defeated the Wheaton Knights 19-5 in a 5 inning game. Davis Purviance got the ball rolling on the first pitch of the game driving a fastball to the deep gap in right center for an inside the park home run! Purviance went 4-4 (HR, 2B) 4 rbi and 2 runs scored. Jake Gluszek also went 4-4 (3B) 5 rbi and 4 runs scored. Taylor O'Donnell 3-4, (rbi, 3 runs) and Nick Bratcher 3-4 (2 doubles 4 rbi) were also big contributors. Jake Jarzynka(2 runs), Brendan Treacy(2b, 2 rbi) and Connor Murphy all chipped in w/ 2 hits each. Josh Quade had a hit, an rbi and scored twice. Jake Swenson and Jeff Schoenhofen each added a hit which brought the hit total to 23 for the game! Taylor O'Donnell earned the win on the mound (3-1). "T" pitched 4 shutout innings allowing 2 harmless hits while striking out 2. The key to his success was ZERO walks! The infield defense (Purviance 3b, Billy Krawczyk ss and Schoenhofen 2b) was outstanding while firstbasemen Swenson and Bratcher both made several great plays on tough throws. The Cougars played without one of their top all around players Mike Pratl who is nursing an injury. The Cougars are now 6-1-1 in the league and sit on top of the WSBL National League Gray division with a full slate of weekend games coming up...

On Saturday morning the Cougars battled the Glen Ellyn Rangers to an 11 inning 3-3 tie! The game was inning after inning of game saving plays, great pitches, and key hits. Both teams had another game scheduled for that afternoon otherwise they may still be playing. Taylor O'Donnell was 2-4 run scored and a double while Nick Bratcher was 2-4 with an rbi. The game was really about defense though. There was a month worth of outstanding defensive plays by both teams. Jake Gluszek (4 inn) Bratcher (4 inn) and Billy Krawczyk (3 inn) all pitched great baseball! Davis Purviance sparkled behind the plate while Jake Jarzynka made two game saving plays at third base in the bottom of the 10th to keep the Cougars alive.

The Cougars then traveled to Joliet to arrive just in time to meet Victory Baseball. The Cougars obviously physically and emotionally drained lost 4-1 after allowing 4 unearned runs. The game was the 3rd for the Cougars in less than 24 hours, actually the Cougars played 3-1/2 games in less than 24 hours and traveled good distance to all of them. Taylor O'Donnell went 2 for 2 with another double, his 3rd over the 2 days.

On Monday the Cougars traveled to Oak Lawn to take on the Chargers. The Cougars received an outstanding pitching performance from Mike Pratl (1-0-1) for the 7-1 win. Pratl pitched 7 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 3 hits while walking only 2. Davis Purviance, Jake Gluszek and Brendan Treacy all had 2 rbi. Connor Murphy, Taylor O'Donnell and Jake Jarzynka all scored twice. Billy Krawczyk and Josh Quade shined in the outfield while Jake Swenson and Jarzynka had great defensive games at firstbase and Purviance threw some leather at third! The key play of the game came in the bottom of the 3rd inning with the Cougars leading 3-1 and the bases loaded with one out. The #4 hitter for O.L hit a smash to Jeff Schoenhofen at 2nd base which started the 4-6-3(Schoenhofen, O'Donnell to Jarzynka who handled a tough throw) doubleplay to end the inning and sent the Cougars on their way to the win. Pratl was in command the entire way throwing only 15 pitches in the final 3 innings combined and a total of 65 for the game!

14u Cougars update...

The 14u Cougars haven't played a league game of any kind since April 17th. Finally on May 3rd the weather cooperated somewhat as the Cougars opened their I 80 league season with a 6-1 chilly victory over the SouthSide Express. Taylor O'Donnell pitched 5 innings of shutout relief allowing only an infield dribble single while striking out 4 for his 2nd win on the year (2-0). Davis Purviance, Jeff Schoenhofen, O'Donnell, Jake Gluszek and Jake Jarzynka all contributed an rbi each. The Cougars also currently lead the National League Gray division of the WSBL league with a 3-1 record.

3 in a row...

The 14u Cougars ran their early season win streak to 3 games with an 11-1, 5 inning contest against the Lisle Hawks on Tuesday night at Benedictine University. Jake Gluszek (1-1) earned the win with a 4 inning 11 strikeout performance. Jake allowed just 2 singles. Davis Purviance struck out 2 hitters in one inning of shutout relief. Mike Pratl led the offense with 3 hits and 4 rbi, Gluszek added 2 hits and 3 rbi, Nick Bratcher had 2 hits and 3 rbi while Purviance 3 singles, 3 runs scored and Connor Murphy rbi also chipped in offensively. The Cougars committed only one error following up an errorless game the night before...

14u Cougars update...

The 14u Cougars bounced back from a dismal, uninspiring 4-0 opening day loss to the Lockport Vipers by beating the Vipers 10-0 in a 5 inning game on Sunday April 10th. The Cougar bats came around after the opening day loss in which they scratched out only 3 singles (2 by newcomer Jake Jarzynka). In the victory Nick Bratcher (3-1/3 inn 5 k 1 hit) and Davis Purviance (1-2/3 1 hit) combined for the shutout. Purviance was 3 for 3 at the plate with 2 rbi, Taylor O'Donnell went 2 for 2, 3 runs scored, Mike Pratl 2 for 2 (2 doubles) and Jake Gluszek 3 rbi led the offensive attack... The defense was led by O'Donnell's sparkling plays in centerfield and shortstop, Purviance's defense on the mound and solid play at third by Pratl...

Win # 2

The Cougars traveled to Naperville on April 11th and defeated the Naperville White Sox 5-3. Taylor O'Donnell (4 inn) earned the win while newcomer Josh Quade pitched 2 solid innings of scoreless ball to warrant the save. The defense was sound playing errorless baseball and the combination of Mike Pratl to Billy Krawczyk to Nick Bratcher (5-4-3) turned a "Big League" double play to snuff out a White Sox rally in the 5th inning. The Cougar bats are inconsistent in the early going but good clubs find a way to win. Nick Bratcher led the offense going 2 for 3. Connor Murphy executed a perfect squeeze bunt in the second to get the Cougars going during a 3 run inning and Pratl added a deep sac fly to score O'Donnell with an insurance run late in the game...

COUGAR BIRTHDAYS IN MAY

We are proud of all of our Cougar players' accomplishments, athletically and/or academically. Perhaps the thing that really makes the coaches most proud is the fact that we usually end our discussion about each player with the statement, "what a great kid". We really are blessed to have some remarkable young men in this organization!
