Welcome to the official web site of the London Minor Hockey Association.
We are located in London Ontario, Canada, where our home ice is at Argyle Arena on Wavell Street. Other members who attended the first meeting were Stan Stokes, Dr. Gordon Clark, Dr. Herb Andrews, Jack Webb and Grant Sangster. Jack's bantam team and Gene's midget team, both advanced from this area to the provincial championships in our first hockey season. Doug Jarrett played on the midget team and eventually went on to a very successful career with the Chicago Blackhawks. The city is now divided into 5 hockey associations, operating under the Greater London Hockey Association banner. Check out www.GLHA.ca, the GLHA web site for information and links to the 4 other associations, as well as the schedules and the standings for the Forest City Hockey League and Community Hockey League. Thunder Classic Tournament is now open to House League teams!!!March 19-21 Registration has been extended to include Red and White teams in the Novice to Midget Divisions! After a devastating loss to SSE in the final of the Ernie Clayton Memorial Pee Wee tournament in Welland the previous Sunday, the CHL regular season champion Scotiabank Thunder was determined not to fall short in the LMHA Neil Barker Tourney.
After falling behind early, our hard working squad battled back to 3 - 1 decision over a very formitable Cambridge Stars team. The early evening game saw us roll past Stoney Creek 6 - 1 with high pressure forechecking and solid defensive coverage. Saturday we played perhaps our best game of the year with pin-point accurate passing, unselfish disciplined play that resulted in a 7 - 1 victory over a very overwhelmed Sudbury team.
Our semi-final draw was against a fast skating Newmarket team who took an early 1 - 0 lead. As is the character of this team, we came storming back to tie the game a minute later and continued to outwork the opposition to post a 3 - 1 victory.
We knew the final was going to be tough playing a high powered Erindale team that had scored 23 goals while only surrendering 5 in it's previous 4 games. The boys knew we had to battle for every inch of ice and disrupt their skating on the bigger ice surface. After giving up some early chances, and some big time saves by our goalie and game MVP Alex Grenier, we smothered them defensively and kept pressuring them until they were forced into taking penalties. We capitalized on two powerplays, before running into penalty trouble of our own in the third period, killing off both a five on three and four on three before sealing it with an empty net goal for an exciting 3 - 0 triumph.
The cup was presented to our captain Corey Ford, as the whole team celebrated what was a total team effort of hard work, team play, and willingness to follow the instruction of four very proud coaches.
