YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED ONLY IN THE EVENT OF A CHANGE AND/OR PROBLEM WITH YOUR REGISTRATION. If you don’t hear from us, your child is in!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Teachers may cancel a session of classes if a minimum of students does not enroll, and classes are contingent on classroom availability at La Entrada.
  • Students may withdraw from a class for a 90% refund if the registrar is contacted prior to the 2nd week of classes start date! No refunds will be given after the second class meeting.
  • There will be no supervision after classes. Students must be picked up or walk home immediately after class.
  • Please have your child bring a snack to school to be eaten just before class, as the teachers have noted the kids are hungry at that time and benefit from some food.
  • Students and parents are expected to show respect to classmates, instructors, classrooms and property at all times. Failure to do so may result in student’s dismissal.

COOKING FUN: Thursday Adventures

Cooking fun for the student with a bit more experience in the kitchen: Join other students who would like to explore more challenging culinary projects. We’ll survey the group at the first cooking class and together decide which projects to undertake. Past projects have included Fettucine Alfredo, Oven-Fried chicken, Ratatouille, Tiramisu, Puff Pastries and Boston Cream Pie. If you enjoy cooking, come join us for a weekly adventure! (Please alert Linda to any diet restrictions or food allergies.)

NEW CLASS FORMAT! Join your friends for “Cooking Fun” as you prepare after-school snacks, mini-meals, and special treats. Each short one-hour class gives you basic cooking skills and “chef’s secrets” so you can cook for yourself, your family and friends. GUITAR CLASS

Whether you want to join a band and tour the world or strum your favorite song behind closed doors – if you want to play the guitar you need a solid foundation. You need technique, rhythm, and knowledge of harmony. This class will focus on developing basic technique, rhythm, learning chords, strumming, and developing a basic ability to play the instrument. This is the class for new students and returning guitar class students. Students will be placed in bands based on their experience level. Each student will learn new songs and perform in a concert at the end of class! Required Resources: Acoustic or Electric Guitar*, small guitar amp (if electric), guitar picks, guitar tuner, 3-ring binder to keep guitar notes, plus notebook paper.

* Please call or email the instructor if you have questions about purchasing/renting an instrument. Note: Learning to play the guitar takes dedication. Students are expected to practice at least 15 minutes, 5 times a week. Students who do not complete given assignments may be asked to leave the class.

JAZZ BAND

Jazz Band offers young instrumentalists the opportunity to develop their musical skills in an art form that moves from the written page to that of the creative mind. Students will be able to create music 'on-the-spot' through improvisation. Students will lose their inhibitions in a non-threatening environment, which will promote music making in four distinct styles: ballad, Latin, rock and swing. The following instrumentalists are encouraged to participate: saxophone, trumpet, trombone (baritone/euphonium), clarinet, flute, *electric and *bass guitar, *drum kit and *piano (*keyboard). The highlights of the year include performing at a winter concert and an outdoor performance in the spring. *The rhythm instruments have a maximum enrollment of two students per instrument to ensure adequate playing time.

MATH WIZARDS II

 

Develop problem-solving strategies while solving Math “challenges,” playing Math games, and having fun! Class time will be divided into two segments. First, students will work cooperatively to solve Challenges (Mensa Math puzzles, Magic Squares, Tangrams-geometrical designs, brain teasers, logic). Next, a game will be introduced. After modeling the game with the whole group, students will work with small groups/partners to challenge one another. If time allows, a second game will be introduced. Each week, your child will bring home at least one new game for your family to keep, play, and enjoy.

As a full-time teacher, she taught second, third, and fourth grades and directed the district-wide GATE program for grades 2-5. She also worked editing math textbooks for Addison-Wesley. For the past 10 years, she has been a substitute/part-time teacher at Playschool in Atherton and Redwood City. As a district parent for the past 13 years, she has volunteered for numerous programs.


FENCING

Want to learn a cool new sport? Tired to standing out there in left field waiting for something to happen?  Never get the ball to shoot for two?  Here it is, fencing!  It's one-on-one, so you are in there right then and there.  You'll learn the basics over the course of the semester and you'll be ready to start competing once you're done.

Each week, the instructor will cover the basics of fencing: advance, retreat, attack, defend.  You get accustomed to the movements and then it's up to you to implement the movements to make the winning hits!

During the 12-week session, you will develop good character traits, mental toughness, problem solving skills, physical agility, strength and quickness.  Our class is designed for those with no prior experience as well as those who have practiced the sport already.

All equipment will be provided:  Students will use practice swords, jackets, masks, gloves and will learn the basics fencing.  Students may purchase their own personal fencing mask and/or glove (no swords!).  Please contact First Place Fencing Club for more information about the class or the equipment. SINGING

Learn to sing contemporary and classic songs with a group of students. Students will learn singing techniques, basic music reading, projection, harmony and cadence. The program will conclude with a concert performance. Students should be prepared to practice their songs at home.

He loves helping students find the fun in singing while developing sound fundamentals, and hopes to awaken the creative side in all his students.


CHESS

Whether you’re a complete beginner or have been playing chess for years, the BayAreaChess program will give you a chance to improve your chess game and have fun playing. A typical day in the class will consist of instruction on tactics and strategy followed by a practice game. Students will be divided in several groups based on ability so that each will receive instruction appropriate for their skill level.

BayAreaChess gives students the choice of playing at the club or team level. The club level is for recreational play and the team level is for students who wish to complete additional training and attend chess tournaments. More information about playing at the team level will be made available when the class begins. VIDEO CLASS Every week through fun and creative hands on activities students will learn and explore different parts within the video-making process. We will cover story structure, acting, equipment proficiencies and postproduction editing. Students will work as a team to complete on short movie created solely by them through a collaborative process.

Instructor: Sagesse Graham, sagesse@riekes.org Sagesse also known as Jessie, grew up in Olympia Washington, and is a graduate of the Evergreen State College where she studied Film, Video, and Audio production as well as Youth Empowerment Through the Arts, Community Organizing and Theater.


ANIMATION

Every week youth will learn simple and fun 2-d and 3-d animation techniques including Claymation, Stop Motion, Time-lapse and Collage. This series of workshops teaches the basics of frame-by-frame shooting with moving image cameras.  Through fun hands on activities we will bring the inanimate object to life.  As a crew we will create short animations that combine one or two of the above-mentioned techniques. In addition to animation this class will also teach the basics of story structure and small scale set design.

CERAMICS

Does your child love to be creative and get their hands dirty? Of course they do! For most kids, working with clay is a treat only offered in small doses at school. They love getting their hands into the clay and seeing sculpture magically appear in their hands. This class offers ten classes of pinching, coiling, and sculpting creatures and vessels, then glazing them in a rainbow of colors. We will be making: mugs, animals, vases, and a free choice project. At the end of the sessions, all pieces will be wrapped for safety and sent home.

She has a Bachelors’ degree in Art Education and a Single Subject Art credential. She regularly makes and sells art on her own, working in watercolor and ceramics. She is married with two kids in 2nd and 6th grades.

 


FUN WITH FIBER ARTS

 

We are going to explore the exciting area of the art world where fabrics take center stage!  Every project will be a fabric based project, from traditional art forms such as batik, silk painting and weaving, to just plain fun projects like sock animals.  You don’t want to miss this great, hands-on experience with such a variety of materials.

Instructor:  Janet Gregori has been teaching public school students from kindergarten through 8th grade for the past 19 years.  She is currently teaching art and photography to 6th through 8th graders at La Entrada School.  She is a National Board Certified teacher in the arts, a Fulbright Scholar, and has won several teaching awards including The Charles & Helen Schwab Foundation’s TeachEach Award and the John Hopkins University’s Distinguished Teacher Award.  In her free time, she does her own photography and art work, and teaches private art lessons to children and adults.

 


DRUMMING

 

Learn about drums and percussion and their role in various genres including Jazz, Rock, Classical, and world music. This is a great opportunity to get to know the fundamentals of rhythm and the basics of how to play a drum set, whether you are interested in playing in a band or just for fun.  Beginning and intermediate students welcome.  Curriculum will cover:  Basic music reading, playing simple drum beats used in popular music today, half time grooves, shuffles, 16th note and triplet fills and performances duets

Mike Osborn has been teaching drums and music since 2002 and has had the privilege to direct Riordan's High School Drum line. Mike has been teaching at the Riekes Center since 2005.  Mike is currently working on a Bachelors Degree in Music and has privately studied classical percussion with Artie Storch as well as drum set with Danny Descalzo, Mike Curotto and Larry Berman.


HIP HOP

The class is a fusion of hip-hop dance styles allowing students to have fun, let loose and expresse themselves. There is a warm up before choreography is taught, and a cool down after. The class will culminate in a final performance of the choreography open to friends and family.  Hip Hop is a fun and wonderful way to move your body and expand your vocabulary of movement.

She currently dances and studies with some of the Bay areas leading Hip Hop choreographers and instructors.  


BRAIN GAMES

 

Children enjoy solving puzzles and playing games while they develop creative skills and analytical thinking. They are no tests and no homework, just plain Fun First focus. This program is based on puzzles and games which are designed to accentuate logical thinking and enable the students to learn mathematical and logical principles.

CARTOONING

Back by popular demand! Cartooning is a wonderful means of telling a story or expressing humor in a visual art form. Basically, it is very much like telling a joke, only on paper. Technical emphasis will be on facial expressions and character development, overall visual layout and design, legible lettering, clean inking and presentation, depicting action, and sequential storytelling. 

Students will be encouraged to develop their own characters and stories and to express their own humor and imagination in the form of a comic strip, single-panel, or comic book.

FLAG FOOTBALL 

This class designed for 4th and 5th grade boys and girls covers the proper fundamentals of Flag Football.  This class will instruct participants in passing, catching, flag pulling and game strategies.

Tim Bowler is a National Board Certified Physical Education Teacher and Coach at Menlo Atherton Hgih School. He also runs the baseketball, baseball and football clinics for kids at Burgess Park in the summer and holiday breaks.


Mandarin Chinese – Level 1 and 4

Students will learn Mandarin Chinese conversation skills and practice writing simplified characters with the guide of pin yin phonetics.  Classes involve singing, dancing, writing, and drawing to enrich the children's appreciation of the Chinese language and culture. These classes meet twice per week with textbooks for guided instruction.  Level 1 class is designed for students new to Mandarin with little or no previous knowledge.  Level 4 class is a continuation class for students with few years of Mandarin language experience. If you are unsure whether your child might qualify for this level, please speak with the instructor, Grace Ko.  Grace can help place your child depending on his/her level and ability. Intermediate Spanish

This class is for students with some prior Spanish instruction.  Through a structured approach, the class is packed with interactive games, oral and written exercises, fun action songs, rhymes and crafts all in the targeted language. Children will quickly and happily learn vocabulary, and they will learn to convey short conversations in a natural way from this methodology based on communication and expression.  A language workbook is included. Students will be evaluated at the end of the semester for appropriate placement in the following semester. New students are welcome.
