New Western Region Umpire Coordinator Named
Mark Bernstein
Mark Bernstein, a Little League volunteer umpire since 1976, has been named the new Western Region Umpire Coordinator. Bernstein, who hails from District 31 in Southern California, enthusiastically said, “It is my hope that I, with the assistance of an incredible group of dedicated volunteer instructors, a supportive Western Region staff and the staff at Williamsport, can continue to improve the quality of volunteer umpiring throughout the Western Region.” Bernstein has served in California District 31 from 1996-2010, and has served as an instructor on the Western Region level for several years. Bernstein is completing his third consecutive two-year term as the president of the Western Regional Little League Umpire Alumni Association, a non-profit association that he helped form. Mark has umpired in the 2008 Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, PA; 2002 Senior Baseball World Series in Bangor, ME; 2000 European Regional Baseball Tournament in Kutno, Poland; 1999 Western Regional Baseball Tournament in San Bernardino, CA; and the 1995 Junior Baseball Regional Tournament in Sacramento, CA. What keeps Bernstein going as a Little League volunteer after so many years? “I believe that I am making a difference. Each time I umpire or teach or work with young people, I am striving to teach those core values, through Little League, that will hopefully make each of these individual’s better adults and, ultimately, leaders of the future. It is a responsibility I take seriously,” he said.
