2008 ASAP RESULTS

ASAP Logo

The Western Region has the best 2008 ASAP results in the Nation!

Jim Gerstenslager, Regional Director announced that the Western Region closed the gap of reaching 100% participation by attaining 90% in 2008!  This was a 2% gain for the second year in a row and we thank everyone for their efforts! Congratulations to Montana and Wyoming for joining Oregon as the second and third states in the Western Region that have attained 100% participation.  Oregon has reached 100% for three consecutive years.
Jim said, “The safety and welfare of the children under our charge is Little League’s number one priority and objective”. He went on to say, “Without a commitment to safety from everyone in the program, the best interests and protection of the children is not the primary focus”.
“The current ASAP program (since being adopted) has proven to be the most effective approach to player protection. The leagues that have developed and instituted safety plans have drastically reduced insurance claims and injuries resulting in a safer environment for the children”.
Jim said, “The goal for the Western Region for 2009 has not changed, and is to have every league in the region at
100% by the time the ASAP plans deadline is reached on April 1st.
Little League Baseball Incorporated has many resources available, including a CD that has all the information needed to develop a plan for your league or district. You can also call your District Administrator or the Regional Office at
909-887-6444 for advice and support.
Let’s all participate.   Every state in the region has the ability to do what Montana, Oregon and Wyoming has done. Let’s strive to keep the Western Region as the #1 safety region in the United States for 2009!
To read and download the latest results of the ASAP News Letter, click on Regional Results.
Thank you for your participation!

JOIN IN TO BE PART OF A SPECIAL NEW PROJECT FOR THE WESTERN REGION!

Bollard Ball

We Just Need a Few More Bollards to Complete the Northern Parking Area!

Earlier this year, Jim Gerstenslager, Western Region Director, was given a directive by Williamsport to create a barrier between Little League Drive and the northern parking lot of the Western Region complex. It had been suggested that a series of posts and a sturdy chain would stop vandals that were using the area for their own personal enjoyment with no regard to the Little League’s property. An idea was concocted that a series of concrete baseballs and softballs would certainly due the job but the cost did seem out of the question. However, after some research and some negotiation we came upon a company that was local to the complex and would delight in creating the diverters for us.  It will take a combination of 60 concrete baseballs or softballs to complete the north parking lot project. When this is completed, the same type project is planned for the south parking lot.

These diverters are called Bollards  you will see them at schools, public parks and roads throughout the country. Our Western Region bollards are unique because not only will they do the job as requested by Williamsport but it is an opportunity for leagues, districts and individuals throughout the region to have their own personal testimonial to Little League, but also a small portion of the donation will go to the maintenance and upkeep of our Western Region complex. The 1200 pound white baseballs or optic yellow softballs are made of white concrete, and placed on a foundation formed in the shape of a home plate. They are secured by bolts and are sprayed with a chemical so that graffiti can be easily removed. A 4”x6”cutout strategically placed on the ball so that a bronze plaque can be inserted with your league, district, organization or family name. There is no limit to the number of characters to be placed on the plaque, but keep in mind that the more characters the smaller the font. If you want the Little League logo on your plaque there is an additional charge of $85.00. The total price (with logo) is $785.00 and this includes the installation. If you want to participate in this worthwhile project, and leave a personal testimonial to the Western Region, please CLICK HERE, to download an application and instructions on how you can participate in this important project. There is a limited amount of spaces so orders will be taken on a first come, first served basis.

Better Coaches. Better Games. Better Leagues.
Managers and coaches are among the most important volunteers in the Little League® program. They have to know the game and they have to love working with kids. Leagues with knowledgeable, caring and concerned coaches have an advantage when it comes to making the games fun and retaining players.
That’s why Little League® International created The Coaches Registry. The registry gives coaches exclusive tools and resources to prepare them for the job of putting the Little League program into action. To register in the program, and download useful tools and information to find out how this program can help you become a better manager or coach, click here!

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS TOO MUCH BASEBALL?

Stephen D. Keener
We hear the horror stories about kids spending nearly every week of the year playing in one particular sport; about parents spending thousands of dollars so their child can play on an "elite" traveling team; about pitchers being used so much in non-Little League play that they require surgery that used to be reserved for Major League pitchers looking to extend their careers. How much is too much? Check out the essay by President and Chief Executive Officer Stephen D. Keener. This article was featured in the 2005 Little League World Series program.   More...
