For the first time in at least 3 years, the Central Region Challenger Jamboree didn't involve rain! About 60 participants from leagues in Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana joined us for a fun-filled weekend of baseball! Ashland National Little League-KY, Moraine-West Carrollton Little League-OH, Lowell Little League-IN, Indiana Central Little League-IN, Michigan District 1 and Indiana District 11 all sent representatives.
Thanks so much to the volunteers in each of those leagues who work so diligently to make the program possible.
The weekend included five baseball games, an opening ceremonies in which each participant received a medallion , indoor games with lots of prizes, a picnic on Saturday afternoon and a pizza party Saturday evening. Additionally each participant received a goodie bag filled with donated items.
A BIG Little League thank you to the Central Region volunteers who are dedicated to making the event so special. What a great bunch of big-hearted people!!
A special thanks to all those who donated items for goodie bags and items for the raffle. Also, thanks to Indianapolis Fire Department EMS personnel who assisted us with the event.

The 2009 Central Region Umpire School was held the week of April 19th through the 24th. 13 students representing 6 states were in attendance--Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Throughout the week, the students participated in sessions on field mechanics, rules and plate work. They also were able to network with the other students, as well as the staff of volunteer umpires who conducted the clinic.
Thanks especially to the instructors who volunteered their time to conduct the school: Dave Tucker, WI-6; Jason Kelley, WI-4; Terry Coburn, MI-2; Jim Helm, IN-9; Jerry Millage, IA-2; Roy Turley, KY-3; Keith Wagner, IN-7 and Central Region Umpire Training Coordinator Jeff Knoebel, IN-5.

The policy regarding the maximum number of World Series assignments a volunteer umpire may receive has been changed.
Previously, a Little League volunteer umpire was permitted to umpire only two different World Series tournaments in baseball and/or softball. Also previously, there was no minimum time limit between those two World Series tournaments.
The new policy places no limit on the number of different World Series tournaments in baseball and/or softball that an umpire could work. However, the new policy places a minimum four-year hiatus between each of those assignments - during which the volunteer umpire must continue to provide his/her services to the local league/district.
With these additional opportunities spread out over a number of years, it is our hope these veteran umpires will continue to lend their expertise to the Little League program beyond their most recent World Series assignment.
1. Any umpire who has been assigned to a World Series may apply for another world series at a different level.
2. It must be at least four years since the last assignment. (Example: An umpire works a 2009 World Series. That umpire once again becomes eligible under this condition to be recommended in 2012 to umpire a different World Series in 2013. If that umpire works a World Series in 2013, that umpire again becomes eligible under this condition to be recommended in 2016 to umpire a different World Series in 2017.)
3. An umpire may only be assigned to any one of the eight World Series one time.

As many of you know, the "Champions Walkway" has been completed and is a very attractive and impressive addition to the Center (see photo below). The walkway is lined with all the state flags of our region. In order to keep the state flags flying as often as possible, we have asked the District Administrators to help provide us with the flags or the money to purchase the flags. The project was presented to the Regional Advisory committee and received their full support.
To date we have already received flags or the money to purchase flags from:
--Indiana (from all Districts)
--Kentucky (from District 1)
--Michigan (from District 2 and 11)
--Minnesota (from Districts 1 and 4)
--Ohio (two flags from District 3)
--Kansas (1 flag from District 2)
--Iowa (from all Districts)
--Wisconsin (2 flags from District 1)
BE A PART OF THE CHAMPIONS WALKWAY
If you are interested in a way to permanently recognize those who support the preservation and advancement of the Little League program and the great tradition that it represents for young boys and girls throughout the Central Region and throughout the world, a brick on the "Champions Walkway" is a great idea.

Local Rules, Ground Rules and Bylaws
Remember, your league’s local rules, ground rules, and bylaws are developed, maintained, and approved annually by the Board of Directors, and are not considered part of the Constitution. NONE of your local rules should conflict with Little League Rules, Regulations and Policies. Also, existing Little League Baseball Rules, Regulations and Policies should not be re-stated in your local rules, as it invites conflicting interpretations. Local rules, ground rules and bylaws expire each year (unlike the constitution, which governs the league meetings, etc., until it is amended by the Membership and approved by Regional Headquarters.)
