Edge Parents, players, and prospects,

With the final games of the 2008-09 season completed, we move on to a new season,  with new challenges and new opportunities.  Our strong play as an organization during the season is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our players, coaches and families.  Here are some of the competitive highlights of the past year:

Winning is just part of the EDGE experience, however.  The friendship, good times, and personal growth of our players are equally important criteria in our evaluation of the season.  The family and team parties, tournament fun, and sleepovers are just as important as the on ice play.  Playing between periods at Ranger and Islander games and attending college and AHL games during tournaments are memories that last a lifetime.

The Edge goal is to provide the framework for players to develop their hockey and personal skill to their greatest potential. Our organization is committed to finding and keeping coaches knowledgeable in the sport, sensitive to the needs of the players, and enthusiastic in meeting the challenges of the season. Our coaches are focused on providing an environment where players can improve - emphasizing hard work, commitment, and team play.

Having each player compete at a proper level to enable them to succeed is an important part of our program. We encourage continued participation in the sport, whether travel, high school or middle school, house league or clinics.

2008 Letter to Players/Prospects

Long Island Edge

Edge Parents, players, and prospects,

Another season has ended. Now we turn the page and move on to a new season with new opportunities, new challenges, and sometimes new coaches and teammates. Last season had some great moments – victories at Silver Sticks, League Championships, Tournament Championships and overall competitive success. Winning is just part of the EDGE experience, however. The friendship, good times, and growth of our players play just as important a role in the EDGE experience in how we evaluate the season. I’m sure we enjoyed equally great moments in these areas as well.
The Edge goal is to provide the framework for players to develop their hockey and personal skill to their greatest potential. Our coaches are focused on providing an environment where players can improve - emphasizing hard work, commitment, and team play. Having each player compete at a proper level to enable them to succeed is an important part of our program. We encourage continued participation in the sport, whatever each player’s ability or experience may be, and at whatever level or whatever team that player is part of.
The continued growth of the EDGE is dependent on many things – most importantly the availability of adequate ice and quality coaching. Affordability is also a factor as rocketing ice costs drive up fees. While Port Washington remains totally committed to the Edge, efforts to secure ice at several other venues has had mixed results as other rinks attempt to expand their own programs, and other leagues try to fill their own requirements. We learned last season that ice must also be obtained at venues close enough to Nassau County to enable complete participation of our players, especially for practice. All requests for ice have been made for this season, and we are awaiting confirmation of availability to provide you with team practice schedules.
Our coaching staff has been tentatively established, (barring unforeseen circumstances) and will consist of a blend of long time EDGE coaches and the influx of a new generation – including Andy Greges and Kord Angelluci. Our veterans include coaches Beale, Cammarata , Dathe, Giamundo, Giardino, Lawler, McCarthy, Nielsen, and Scanlon. Our coaching staff
has the added support of dedicated and knowledgeable parents behind the bench and on the ice, available to assist our head coaches or to take over when circumstances prevent coaches from being at events. Remember- our coaches also have work and family obligations that will cause them to miss practices and games – despite their high levels of commitment. We are fortunate to have certified, qualified assistants who can fill the gaps.
Tryouts will begin the early in April. Applications and team specific information are included in this package. PLEASE HELP US OUT BY RETURNING ALL FORMS AND PAYMENTS PROMPTLY. Our coaches will select players based on their hockey skills, knowledge of the game, enthusiasm, attitude, and behavior. We will field one team at each USA Hockey age category that will be eligible to participate in the USA Hockey state and national tournament at the end of the season, and that will play in the Long Island Amateur Hockey League at the Tier II or “B” level. Additional teams will be non-tournament bound, and will play in the LIAHL division that includes other non-tournament bound teams. We have completed our full transition to Tier II, and coaches are mandated to select players that will allow us to compete at the best level possible. Team size is targeted at 14-15 players plus goalies on each team, except Bantam and Midget, where rosters may be expanded at the coach’s discretion to allow for conflicts due to high school games, homework, job schedules and injury.
Our league schedule normally will consist of 18 – 20 games per team, with added exhibition games scheduled for a total of about 40 games per team. . Mite, Squirt, and Peewee, and Bantam teams can expect to practice twice weekly, with power skating scheduled as a regular practice slot or as added ice. Please be aware that participation in power skating is not optional; it is an important part of each player’s development. Goalie training with Phil Cammmarata and Dean Giamundo will also be on a scheduled basis. Tournaments are usually slotted for Thanksgiving Weekend and President’s Week, sites and participation to be determined by the members of each team. Additional tournaments – including Silver Sticks - may be scheduled on a team by team basis, provided they do not conflict with league games.
EDGE parents are an important asset and are considered valuable allies in the operation of our organization and development of our players. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed to assist in scheduling, scorekeeping, supervision of games, and in maintaining the flow of information between families and team management. Current team managers will be assisting in the registration and tryout process. Team managers for next season will be named once the tryout process has been completed.
Due to escalating ice fees, season fees are expected to rise to $2595.00 per player for Mite through Squirt, and $2695 for Peewee and Bantams. A deposit of $1000 must be made upon acceptance to the team, with the balance due by Nov. 25. Home and away jerseys and home and away socks (CCM – black and white) will cost $195.00. Old style teal Bakka jerseys will be phased out. All jerseys must be paid for when ordered. Two tournaments per team are included in the team fee. Families with more than one EDGE player will receive a modest discount in their fees, as will players who must use toll bridges for all activities. USA Hockey has requested that all USA Hockey registration should be completed online by the player or parent, and must be done prior to the start of the season.
Players who desire to continue playing hockey with an organization other than the EDGE must obtain a release from the EDGE before participating in any other tryout, with the exception of those players for whom no team is available. All requests will be granted provided all financial responsibilities to the EDGE have been met. Players with outstanding obligations may be placed on the league list of ineligible players, which will prevent them from participating in any USA Hockey activity. If you have an outstanding balance, please take care of it NOW. Release forms may be obtained on the LIAHL website, www.LIAHL.com and should be mailed to me or brought to the rink. I will provide the release within 24 hours. Please read all information concerning releases prior to determining your tryout schedule.
The EDGE has tried to balance the ability to compete with the enjoyment of the game and the camaraderie of friends and family. We can continue to provide an amiable, nurturing atmosphere as long as we continue to support each other. Teammates, coaches, parents, and administrators must accept responsibility for enabling this to happen. Parents, coaches and administrators as well need to display positive energy and respect for all competitors and for each other. Players and coaches must be prepared, stay fit and conditioned, and must exhibit proper behavior at practice and during games.
I will do my best to provide you with the ingredients needed for your season to be successful. Blend these ingredients, cook them well, add some spice, and you will be able to feast on the result.

As always, I am available at Port should you have any questions or suggestions.

Good Luck to all !

Fred Nielsen
