"Soccer is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated. It satisfies the
soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening.  It is without doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented."

Columbus Crew Visit LUYSA 2011

After waiting a year, the stars aligned and we were finally visited by the Columbus Crew at Alt Park.  Sebastian Miranda, Shaun Francis, Santiago Prim, Josh Williams, Assistant Coach Ricardo Irribaren and the Crew Cat were in attendance.

The kids were divided by age and sent to one of four stations.  Each station had a different game and was run by a one of the Crew members.  The kids rotated through each station and got to spend a little time with each of the Crew.

Afterward, the players spent time to sign autographs and pose for some pictures, before heading  back to Columbus.  Everyone, had a great time.

We would like to thank the Columbus Crew for a great evening.

LUYSA at the Columbus Crew

LUYSA spend the day with the Columbus Crew.  It was packed with things for everyone.  The girls travel team were the ball girls during the game. The boys travel team was the Glidden Spotlight Team and the rest of us got to stand on the field outside the tunnel while the teams came out before the game.

The Crew also gave us a great game.  They were up 3-0 late in the 2nd half when Hesmer (Goal Keeper) was injured and taken out of the game.  Midfielder Eddie Gavin was put in goal to replace him.  The Philadelphia Union scored a quick goal, but it was too little too late.  The Crew treated us to a 3-1 victory.  It was a great time!

CREW ROCKS! - Rescheduled

I'm sorry to announce, but the Crew Event is cancelled for this evening.  At the last minute, they took the whole team to Trinidad as part of the Champions League.  They weren't planning to take the whole team, but at the last minute they decided to.

We will still be going to the game this Sunday (10/24).  The Crew is going to allow everyone with a ticket to be in the Welcome Tunnel (where the Crew comes in at the start of the game).

As soon as we find out the details of the reschedule, I will pass it along.

Sorry for the late notice.

U15 GIRLS - MSSA CHAMPIONS!

REPEAT…  Liberty Union’s U15 Girls MSSA Are Champs Once Again!

In the great words of Yogi Berra, it was deja vu all over again.  After a similarly slow start to last fall’s season, the Liberty Union U15 Girls found their grove and finished with 4-4-2 record.  The first game of the tournament was just like the start of this spring’s regular season, a 2-2 tie with CESA.

The girls started the following weekend with a 1-0 win over the Big Walnut Elite Eagles. Then one hour later a 4-0 win over the Olentangy Orange Blitz.  That max win put the girls in the Championship Game.

Sunday, the LU girls found themselves matched up with the same team from the Fall 2009 Championship game, the Big Walnut Fury.  In one of the hottest days of the spring, the girls found themselves in a 0-0 tie after 60 minutes of regulation play.  Both teams had multiple shots on goal, but they ended up wide or in the keeper’s grip.

In overtime, the LU girls turned up the pressure keeping the ball mainly on the Big Walnut side of the field.  After two corner kicks and a few shots on goal, LU finally threaded one in between the post and the keeper to finish the game with a 1-0 win.  It was a hard fought win which ended with much excitement and cheering.

For two of the girls (Autumn Mitchell & Mackenzie Gilmour), this is their 3rd Championship in a row.  They were part of the U15 girls first ever MSSA Championship team during the Spring 2009 season.

GREAT JOB GIRLS AND CONGRATULATIONS, YOU ARE CHAMPIONS ONCE AGAIN!

The team is pictured below, Left to Right:
First:  Audrey Collmer, Sidney Paxton, Alaina Miller, Alyssa Hilliard, Gabee Wymer & Kenlea Weaver
Second:  Kaylee Landis, Autumn Mitchell, Maddie Drake, Olivia Robinson, Kenley French, Jeanie McGarvey & Whitney Gilmour
Third:  Sydney Perkins, Jamie McGarvey, Mackenzie Gilmour, Desirea Gaffney, Abby Hite & Whitney Gilmour
Fourth:  Mike Gilmour, JT Hilliard & Jeff Raymond

Joe Schappa Spirit Award Recipients 2009

The recipients of the 2008-2009 Joe Schappa Spirit Awards are Mackenzie Gilmour & Trevor Wilson.  This award is given at the end of the spring season to both a boy and girl that will be leaving the U-12 age division and has shown a consistent, positive attitude in our recreational association.  Players are nominated by their coaches and selected by the LUYSA Board.

Joe Schappa – of which the above award is named after – brought soccer to the Baltimore community, beginning both the youth and high school programs.  Joe remains connected to the association, still serving on the LUYSA board.  If you have a chance this fall, make a trip to Alt Park on a Saturday morning to watch children ranging in age from 2 – 14 having fun playing the game of soccer!

Congratulations to Trevor and Mackenzie!

LUYSA Annual 3v3 Tournament (May 4th & 5th)

Friends, Music & Soccer, Soccer, Soccer…

Our annual 3v3 Tournament had another good turn out this year.  Along with tunes filling the air (thanks to DJ and Coach Heath Wolfe) and numerous prizes given out, there was a lot of soccer.  We hope everyone had a great time.

We would like to thank that many coach and parent volunteers that helped make this tournament a success.   We'd also like to give a special thanks to Ed Schaffner for donating the t-shirts, hats and gift certificates.  Thanks again, Ed!

Finally, congratulations to the winners of this year’s event.  See their team pictures below...

U-12 Boys - Spring 08
Ohio South Youth Soccer Association

image_name2
The Liberty Union Youth Soccer Association is very proud to a member league in the Ohio South Youth Soccer Association. Membership in the OSYSA means we have agreed to accept and conform to the standards set fourth by US Youth Soccer Association. It also provides our organization with many resources to continue our growth and training of our young players, coaches, and refs.

Member organizations are the most elite in the state and being recognized, as a peer to those organizations is a great asset to our organization. Getting to this point has been a combined effort of the current board members and all of the coaches for their hard work in making this league what it is today.
