2009 All Star Info

Parents.

LaGrange Park Little League will again be sponsoring ten all-star teams this year. The team members will be announced on or around June 15th 2009. There will be two evenly divided eight and nine year old all-star teams, a ten and eleven year old traveling all-star team and District 10 year old, 11 year old, 12 year old and Junior (13/14 year old) teams.

The exact dates the District teams will be playing will not be announced until late June.  The dates the 11 year old traveling all-star team will be playing have not yet been determined. Following is the tentative tournament schedule for the 8 year old, 9 year old and 10 year old traveling all-star teams. It is anticipated that these teams will also have several practice games with all-star teams from surrounding towns.  Actual game dates can change at the discretion of the tournament or due to rain outs.

Eight year old all-star teams:  July 4th - 12th in Burr Ridge and July 17th - 27th in Hinsdale.

Nine year old all-star teams:  July 4th – 14th in Hinsdale and July 18th - 26th in Burr Ridge.

Ten year old Travel team:  July 9th - 13th in Oak Lawn and July 23rd - 27th in Homer Glen.

For a player to be considered for all-stars, the attached eligibility form must be completed and returned to your child's coach by June 10th 2009. A $50 participation fee must be paid for each all-star player to cover insurance and tournament costs.

Player availability will be one consideration in the selection of the traveling all-stars teams.

Player availability will be a major consideration in the selection of the District teams as these teams could play as many as six games in six nights.

Terry Hankins

All-Star Tournament Director

The Juniors

The Juniors won their third game of Districts by beating Berwyn 18-17. Coach Dave’s boys never had the lead until the bottom of the 7th and were down by as many as 8 runs before mounting their comeback. The Juniors play for the District championship on Tuesday in Berwyn at 5:30.

The District 12s

The 12's lost 8-0 to a very tough LaGrange team.  It was again close early, tied 0-0 in the 4th inning.  Chris Myslicki started on the mound and once again pitched great, as did Andy Chorley, Ryan Dodge and Matt O'Hea in relief.  It just was not the 12s day at the plate. Now the 12s move on to the Darien tournament where they play Tuesday at 5:45, Friday at 8:15, and Saturday at 4:30.

The District 11s

Big Luke Bandyk is getting tired of teams checking his birth certificate and is starting to take it out on them. Against Lyons Township, Luke struck out 13 in 5 innings and hit a home run out of the park at Pleasantdale.  Emmitt Corrigan had big triple and double.  A great defensive effort all around lead to a 6 – 2 win by Coach Hernandez’s team.

In the second game, Teddy Borst was on the mound and was absolutely wicked for 5 innings.  Big Luke Bandyk hit his second home run of the tournament. Alex Hernandez went three for three. But the key play of the game came in the 6th inning with bases loaded and one out, the score tied 8 – 6 and Coach Felix looking for the Rolaids. William Danziger caught a line drive to left field and then threw to third to double off the runner. Game over. LGP wins 8 – 6.

The 11s next play Tuesday at 5:30 in Pleasantdale.

The 11s Travel  - Open up Tuesday in Lisle

The District 10s

I think the St. Francis and Ogden kids would have actually liked to go to school today so they could have talked baseball with their classmates from LaGrange. The 10s gained some sweet revenge after a 14 - 0 pool play loss to LaGrange by knocking their rivals out of the tournament with an 8 – 6 win. Tyler Haage and Matt Prendergast had key hits for the 10s, Jon Ezell once again pitched great and Michael “The Iceman” Metz closed it out for the 10s.

Come out and watch our 10s take on Western Springs for District Championship tonight at 6:00 at Hanesworth.

The Travel 10s

The 10s gave Wasco, the eventual Lisle champion more than they bargained for, scoring 11 runs against the vaunted travel team from Wasco. Andrew Copp pitched great and Jimmy Hollowed, Andrew Copp, Timmy Havenaar, Frannie Corrigan and Johnny Bareis all had multi-hits games for the 10s. Eventually Wasco and their big barrel bats prevailed and it’s on to Homer Glen for the 10s.

And over in Hinsdale

Pat Bresnahan’s 9s almost pulled off the impossible task of beating the powerful Hinsdale A team twice in two days on their home field. Instead the 9s had to settle for 2nd place in the 16 team tournament. On Saturday after beating Westmont, the 9s took care of Big Red 6-5 but just couldn’t quite hold onto a lead on Saturday. Nevertheless, a fantastic job by the 9s.

Overall, Pat’s and Roger Veome’s 9s teams went 7 - 4 Hinsdale with three of the losses coming to the Hinsdale A team and the other to a powerful Belmont team. Following are the comments about both LaGrange Park teams from the Hinsdale Tournament Director.

“LGP parents and kids have been great.  These two teams that you have brought over have played the best fundamental baseball being seen in this tournament. Your 9YO coaches and these players’ regular season coaches should be very proud of your kids - behavior and skill.”

On to Orland Park for the 9s.

The 8s

In Homer Glen, Pat Lyons’ 8s beat Lisle 15-4 in 5 innings. Payton Krone was named MVP of the game by the Lisle team. He led the hitting attack along with Michael Henehan, Michael Quinlan, and Sam Rodewald. Payton Krone and Brendan Copp pitched 2 scoreless innings each. Defensive plays that might be played on ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" came from Steve Mikulecky and Sam Rodewald.

Frank Campo’s 8s won against Bloomingdale with strong outings by Jacob Hollowed, Tommy Pigatto, and Patrick Sideman who each pitched 2 solid innings each and with key hits by Domenic Campo and  Frankie and Mauricio  Espitia . In their second game against Lisle, a   10-4 loss, Thomas  Atself and Frankie  Espitia  gave the 8s two solid innings each in their pitching debuts. Alex Weisshaar, Tommy Pigatto, and James Carrington all had nice hits for the 8s.

On to HInsdale for the 8s.

Come out to Hanesworth tonight at 6:00 and watch the District 10s win LGP’s first District 10 championship since  . . .. . quite frankly it’s been so long, no one can remember.

Congratulations to Manager Dave Stachowicz  and his Junior team for winning Districts, Sectionals and going to state. Also, congratulations to Manager Tim Murphy and the District 10s for winning the Westchester Invitational and to Manager Chris O'Hea and the Districts 12s for winning the Darien tournament. Please send me pictures for the website.

All-Star Recap

What we did right

Purchased insurance which enabled us to play over 15 practices games. This had never been done before and really helped out our teams as well as providing  the Board with some much needed peace of mind.
Established relationships with and impressed local Little League powerhouses like Hinsdale, Western Springs and La Grange. By the end of all-star season, they were calling us asking for practice games and about our fall ball program.
Proved that kids that love to play in a neighborhood Little League program with their friends can also have success playing all-stars.

What we did wrong

Trusted Lisle and Orland Park when they said they would only allow in-house teams all-star teams that were formed after the regular season into their tournaments. Once bitten, twice shy. We will not be going back to Lisle and Orland Park next year.
As a last minute entry, we got 18 games free from our friends in Hinsdale which was great but I think three tournaments may have been a little too much for 8s and 9s and their parents. Also, rainouts and our success forced us to play some double headers which is too much for 8s and 9s. Next year, if Hinsdale has their tournaments again, we are getting in from the beginning. The feedback on Hinsdale was extremely positive.

The Plan for next year

8s -  1.) Evergreen Park (4 game minimum) or Burr Ridge and 2.) Hinsdale or Homer Glen B tournament (for towns with two teams).
9s -  1.) Hinsdale and 2.) Burr Ridge
10s Districts - 1.) Districts and 2.) Westchester
10s Travel -  1.) Westmont and 2.) Homer Glen B tournament
11s Districts - 1.) Districts and 2.) Western Springs
11s Travel - 1.) Elmwood Park and 2.) Westmont
12s Districts - 1.) Districts and 2.) Darien
Juniors - 1.) Districts and 2.) Westchester

If you haven't had enough Little League, stop by Hanesworth tonight at 6:00 and watch two excellent 11s teams from Hinsdale and Western Springs battle for the right to go to state. If you have any feedback on all-stars, positive or negative feel free to provide it to hankins.terry@sbcglobal.net. And finally, after getting a chance to see every LGP all-star team in action during the past month, I want to go on the record as guaranteeing that within the next five years, a 12s team from La Grange Park will win the first  District 12s title for LGP since 1963. You better start accruing for the party now Treasurer Hollowed because it going to be a big one.

"And we still play catch in the yard, my son and I. But it's more pleasant now. No more expectations, no judgment, no instruction, no disapproval, no hard feelings. Just a game of catch. He is  careful not to throw the ball too hard."

Friday, July 18
July 18th

July 18, 2008
Juniors - On Wednesday the Juniors beat N Riverside 14-4. Alec Ramp threw to all but 1 hitter and pitched great.. Big hits by Blake Beck, Joe Rodden and Alec Ramp as well. The whole team is playing great and the bench has been awesome. Coach Stachowicz's boys next face Berwyn on Fri. at 5:30 in Berwyn.
District 12s - Tuesday the 12's shut out Stickney 17-0. Andy Chorley, Jimmy Donahue, Quinn Mulligan, Ryan Dodge and Matt O'Hea all had triples. Rashaad Mathis had 4 hits with 2 doubles and pitched a scoreless final inning, striking out 3. Mike Masterson had 3 hits including a double. All 12 players scored at least one run with Ryan Dodge scoring in all 4 of his trips to the plate.

Thursday Chris O'Hea's team takes on last year's District 11 champs LaGrange at 5:30 at Hanesworth.
District 11s - Felix Hernandez's team finally takes the field this Friday at 5:30 against Lyons Township at 5:30 in Pleasantdale. A win would put them up against the hosts at 2:30 on Saturday.
The 8s - Will battle each other tonight down Homer Glen.
10s Travel team - Currently sporting an official record of 1 - 1 in the Lisle tournament. Following are all of the highlights of last night's game against the top 12 kids in  Yorkville.

And over in Hinsdale
Ever have a guest stop over at the last minute, not pay for anything and then overstay their welcome. That's how the other teams in the Hinsdale tournament are starting to feeling about Pat Bresnahan's 9s squad. They currently are 3 - 0 heading into tonight's 7:30 showdown with Big Red (Hinsdale I) who are also 3 - 0. Pat will have his kids watching Miracle on Ice all day today.
Last night Pat's team beat Burr Ridge 14 - 4. Pitching was very good. Kyle Bell gave up two unearned runs in one inning of work. Ryan O'Malley pitched two innings giving up on two runs and Elijah Medlock pitched a scoreless fourth inning. Players will multiple hits were Aidan Bresnahan and Elijah Medlock. Elijah's two hits produced four runs. His second hit (a single) scored two runners to end the game in the fourth inning.
Last night in their first game, Roger Veome's 9s beat Bolingbrook 9-5. Down 4-0  thru 4, they exploded for 9 runs in the 4th. The team road Adrian Castellon for four innings on the bump before Michael Keegan came in and closed it out. Everyone hit in the fourth with big hits coming from Castellon and Keegan with the bases loaded. Solid defense came from Kevin Doyle, Kathleen Doyle, and John Minella behind the dish. In the second game, Roger's team fell to an excellent Belmont squad. LGP had  a good showing on the mound from Patrick Goodwin and some nice plays in the field by Kevin Donahue and Danny Vale. Roger's team's next game is Friday night at 6:00 in Lisle.
LGP 9s are currently a combined 5 -2 in av ery tough Hinsdale tournament. Great job Roger and Pat.
District 10s
Tuesday against Pleasantdale Big Jon Ezell pitched a fantastic game - 3 innings, 9 up 9 down. Matt Prendergast, Michael  Metz and Matt Tully (who’s mom is a Doyle) finished it off on the mound. However, the key play of the night was a bases clearing triple by (you guessed it) Brian Doyle  to give LGP  a 7-5 lead during a  7 run 5th inning. Final score 8-5. The 10s next game is tonight at 8:00 in Pleasantdale against La Grange who is also 2 -0 in pool play. The winner should get a bye in the District finals starting Friday an Hanesworth.

All in all, a week that our teams  made LGPLL very proud, almost as proud as  . . . . . . . . . Grandpa Doyle.
Support the kids and LGPLL baseball. See you at the games.
