LETCHER COUNTY CENTRAL BASEBALL
Welcome to the unofficial web page of the Letcher County Central Baseball Cougars. The Cougars played their home games at Skyview Park (former home to the Fleming-Neon Pirates) in 2007-2008. The Cougars won 22 of 32 games at Skyview for a .688 winning percentage. Parents, players, volunteers from the community, and coaches helped to get the field ready for the 2007 season. A special thank-you goes to Bobbi Whitaker and the Skyview Park members for allowing us to use the field and facilities. The park is now home to the middle school baseball program.

The Cougars played their first season on the new field in 2009, finishing with a (7-7) record. Mark Wright and Farm Bureau Insurance donated the scoreboard (pictured below) in right center field. LCCHS will play host to the 2010 14th Regional Tournament.

2006 Cougars: The Inaugural Season
2006 marked the first year of existence for Letcher County Central High School. The school is a consolidation of Fleming-Neon, Letcher, and Whitesburg High Schools. The Cougars had a record of (18-14) in their first season, including a perfect (10-0) in district play, with a 53rd District Championship. Jon Adams, Jonathan Tucker, Schyler Sexton, and Steve Caudill were named to the all-district team. Letcher Central lost to Leslie County 1-11 in the opening round of the regional tournament. Dawell Robinson made the all-tournament team. Seniors Dawell Robinson and Steven Caudill signed letters of intent to continue their baseball careers. Robinson signed with Kentucky State University, while Caudill signed with Berea College.

2007 Cougars: 14th Region Champions
In 2007 the Cougars remained undefeated in district play, going (6-0) and defeating Cordia 8-0, and Jenkins 13-0 to win their second consecutive 53rd District Championship. Chase Adams, Jeramy Johnson, Schyler Sexton, and Jonathan Tucker (MVP) were selected to the all-tournament team. Letcher Central captured thier first ever 14th Region Championship with wins over Breathitt County 12-2, Perry Central 6-5, and Leslie County in the championship game 9-7. Making the all-tournament team was Jeramy Johnson, Jon Adams, Colton Cook, and Jonathan Tucker (MVP). The Cougars faced Johnson Central in the Semi-State 8 Sectional Tournament. After winning game one 1-0 in eight innings, Letcher Central dropped games two and three by scores of 0-5 and 3-6, they finished with an overall recored of (25-14). Three Cougars signed to play college baseball in 2007. Jon Adams and Jonathan Tucker signed to play at Pikeville College, while pitcher Schyler Sexton signed with the University of the Cumberlands.

2008 COUGARS WIN 3RD CONSECUTIVE DISTRICT TITLE
Despite having only one senior on the roster, the 2008 Letcher Central Cougars managed to win 22 games and remained perfect against 53rd district foes. The '08 Cougars had a nine game winning streak, and were sitting on a 10-2 record going into CATS testing. During the streak LCC won three consecutive games in their last at bat versus Magoffin County, Hazard, and Bryan Station. They would drop six in a row before going on a seven game win streak. They finished the season on a five game win streak, before losing in the regional tournament.
Behind the strong pitching of sophomore Ryan Brock, Letcher Central defeated Jenkins 10-0 in six innings to advance to the championship game. Brock struck out 10, walked only one, and allowed only one hit.
In the championship game senior Colton Cook pitched his fifth complete game of the season. He would pitch seven innings of shutout baseball, as the Cougars would roll to a 3-0 win over June Buchanan. Making the all-tournament team from LCC was Ryan Brock, Matt Adams, Chase Adams, Tanner Sexton, and Colton Cook - M.V.P. Letcher Central did not committ an error in the two games. Dating back to '07 the Cougars have played four consecutive district tournament games in which they did not committ an error. All four games resulted in shutouts.
In the regional tournament the Cougars would lose a heartbreaker to Perry Central by a score of 6-7. Colton Cook was selected to the 14th region all-tournament team.

2009 Cougars - 53rd District Runners-up
The 2009 Cougars finished a game under .500 at (16-17). The highlight of the season was over a three day span when LCCHS won three consecutive closely contested games. On April 23rd senior Nathan Adams outdueled Jimmy Joe Morgan pitch for pitch over eight innings at home. In the top of the eighth Adams had a three pitch inning. With the score tied 0-0, sophomore Tanner Sexton hit the first pitch fastball from Morgan into the netting in left field for the first walk-off home run in school history. The Cougars won 1-0. The very next day Letcher Central would make the long trip to Stanton to take on the Powell County Pirates. Leading 15-4 in the fifth with two outs, starter Ryan Brock was lifted with runners on first and second and one out. Several Cougar pitchers had problems finding the strike zone and the Pirates fought back. Chase Adams came on to pitch 2+ innings to earn the save as the Cougars held on 15-13. McKenzie Smith went 4 for 5 with 4 rbi's in the win. The very next day the Cougars would earn their first ever win over the Estill County Engineers 7-5. In that game LCCHS would steal nine bases, squeeze in two runs, and committ no errors. Michael Watts, Corey Dollarhide, and Tanner Sexton did the pitching chores in the game. The following Wednesday the Cougars edged out J.J. Kelly (VA) 4-3 and would extend their winning streak to five games. LCCHS would enter the 53rd district as the #2 seed. After defeating Cordia 15-0 in five innings, the Cougars would face Knott Central for the district championship. Leading 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning the Patriots would rally for six runs and go on to win 6-2. Chase Adams, Casey Kincaid, Nathan Adams, and Tanner Sexton were selected to the all-tournament team. In the opening round of the regional tournament the Cougars would face the host team, and 54th district champion Hazard Bulldogs. Trailing 5-1 going into the top of the sixth senior Derek Walzer would hit a tworun homer to pull the Cougars to within 5-3. They would explode for six more in the seventh, as Walzer hit a base clearing double with the bases loaded. Hazard would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, and go on to win 10-9 in 8 innings as the Cougars allowed seven unearned runs in the game. Derek Walzer was selected to the 14th region all-tournament team.
