Beware of Legion Fundraising Scam!
Reprint from Legion Ball Banter. BEWARE! Fund-raising scam hampers local legion efforts May 27, 2006 As if the competition to generate money to support American Legion Baseball isn’t difficult enough, an illegal scam was uncovered this week by Pullman Patriots coach Burdette Greeny. As Greeny was doing his usual visit to local sponsors to generate advertising support for the upcoming season, he was told that someone had already made calls in his territory. The person who visited Greeny’s supporters claimed to be selling advertising for the Pullman American Legion Baseball Program, which would include team photos, schedules and sponsor advertisements for the 2006 season. But a close examination of the flier revealed the alleged scammer did not have a good grasp of who they claimed to be representing. The flier featured the logo from this website, Washington Senior American Legion Baseball Banter. Problem: “Baseball Banter” does not solicit ANY advertising. The flier was being used to generate funds for the “Pullman Posse Senior AA American Legion Teams.” Problem: The Senior Legion Team in Pullman is the Pullman Patriots, not the Posse. The company producing the program, J. Lloyd Printing, and its representatives Bill Kaufman and Joan Lloyd. Problem: J Lloyd Printing lists an address in Yakima which turns out to be an empty field. No such company could be found as listed with the Better Business Bureau or the Washington State Department of Revenue. Not only have the alleged scammers been visiting businesses, but they also have accepted payments from the sponsors and have cashed the checks written by those businesses. The matter is being investigated by the Pullman Police Department and American Legion Baseball officials. If you have any information about this situation or have encountered a similar problem, please contact Commissioner Bill Calkins 360-856-2100 immediately.
