CIF PLAYOFF CHANGES FOR 2002
CIF PLAYOFF FORMAT
There will be four playoff divisions. La Costa Canyon is in Division 1. Each League Champion (not co-champion or tri-champion)shall be guaranteed entry into the first round entry level games. Remaining berths in each division will be filled by at large teams. The top four seeds receive a bye and play their first game at home on Tuesday May 21st. The remaining eight teams play on Monday May 20th to determine which additional four teams will enter the double elimination portion of the tournament starting on Tuesday May 21st. The tournament will follow a double elimination format after the entry level games in two separate brackets. After clinching the Avocado League title and holding a No. 2 ranking in both Newspaper polls the Mavericks could get a first game bye and then play at home on Tuesday May 21st, with a second game on Thursday May 23rd. The top four seeds will be decided at the CIF meeting on Friday night May 17th, with La Costa Canyon, Rancho Buena Vista and Montgomery as the top three league champions and Rancho Bernardo as the next probable seed.

OSEGUERA HITS WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM HOME RUN
Paul Oseguera's Grand Slam Home Run in the bottom of the 7th inning scored Eddie Signaigo with the winning run as the Mavericks beat Carlsbad 6-2. Tyler Ryan allowed only 2 runs while striking out 6 in upping his personal record to 8-0. Having already clinched the outright Avocado League Championship the Mavs (11-0,24-4)look to solidify their hold on one of the four seeds for the CIF Playoffs. In the second inning Oseguera and Stoffel hit back to back singles. Oseguera went to 3rd on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error. Stoffel then scored on Signaigo's rbi single. In the bottom of the 7th Signaigo led off with a double down the left field line, and Andrew Nacario laid down an excellent sacrafice bunt to move Signaigo to third. Lee-Lauduski was relieved by the left hander Cantabrana who then walked Sterk and Burke intentionally to face the left handed hitting Chapelone. The initial move worked as Cantabrana got Chapelone on strikes only to bring up Oseguera. The left handed hitting Oseguera drilled one over 400 ft to the deepest part of the ball park to win the game in regulation. With Fuller resting a bruised right eye Signaigo started in left, Stoffel moved to right field, and Sterk filled in at 2nd. Sterk started one 4-6-3 double play and ranged to his left to get one and throw to T. Ryan hustling to cover the bag at first. Brian Lee-Lauduski(0-6) pitched a strong 6 & 1/3 innings for Carlsbad (3-8,8-15) and hit a double in the 5th inning to scored two runs and tie the game at 2-2.

MAVERICKS SEND CARLSBAD HOME IN 5-4 WALK-OFF WIN
For the second game in a row against Carlsbad the Mavericks came up with a key hit in the bottom of the 7th inning to secure the win. The last place Lancers (3-10,8-17-1) find a way to play the Mavericks (12-0,25-4) tough but not tough enough.
The Lancers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning but lost a run on a cheap shot by the runner who put a shoulder into Anthony Alvarez waiting on the throw from Nacario in centerfield. Alvarez got mad if not even by throwing out the next runner trying to steal second, in the bottom half of the inning he tied the game at 2-2 with a towering home run that landed on the football field (4th), in the 3rd inning he doubled and and in the bottom of the 7th inning he singled in the game winning run. In the top of the 4th inning Carlsbad took a short lived 4-3 lead as Nathan Duarte stole home. In the 5th inning Paul Oseguera tied the game at 4-4 with his 5th home run of the year. In the 6th inning Brian Brehm notched his 5th strike out of the game but Sean Burke's triple to the right center field gap brought in Andrew Logan with two outs. Logan struck out the next batter to strand Burke at third. The Lancers went down in order in the top half of the 7th as Logan got another strike out. In the bottom half of the 7th Jackson Chapelone led off with a double and Paul Oseguera was walked intentionally. Two pinch runners were inserted and Stoffel laid down a bunt down the third base line but Carlsbad got the lead runner at 3rd. With one out Anthony Alvarez then lined a single to left off Lee-Lauduski to score Travis Goldbach with the winning run. Oseguera was 2 for 2, with two walks and an rbi, and Chris Fuller had two hits and an rbi, and a great back hand stab of a hard grounder. Nick Diehl scored once and had four assists at third. Brian Brehm pitched a strong 5 and 2/3rds innings, yielding 4 runs on 5 hits, 5 walks and 5 strike outs. Andrew Logan got credit for his 4th win of the year by pitching to four batters, striking out two and stranding the potential go ahead run at third. Carlsbad's Brian Lee-Lauduski made several great plays at short, and a spectacular dive to tag the first base bag ahead of the runner to end the 6th inning rally but he was charged with his 7th pitching loss of the year.

San Marcos (5-9, and 12-16 overall crawled into a third place finish, ahead of El Calmino and Carlsbad which finished at 4-10. The Mavs spotted San Marcos a 3-0 lead after three innings before getting an rbi single by Oseguera in the 4th inning and a solo home run by Burke in the 6th inning. San Marcos limited the Mavs to only three hits as their defense played a flawless game and several hard hit line drives went right to a San Marcos player. Johnny Zepeda(3-3)was charged with the loss for the Mavs, but yielded only 3 runs on 8 hits, 2 strike outs and walked only 1 batter.

2002 MAVERICK BASEBALL AWARDS
At the 2002 Maverick Varsity Baseball Awards Banquet Paul Oseguera was recognized as the Offensive Player of the year and both Mike Oseguera (1999) and Paul Oseguera were recognized by Coach Justin Machado announcing that Jersey No. 9, worn by both Mike and Paul, will be retired. Other Awards were the Most Valuable Player to Avocado League Pitcher of the Year - Tyler Ryan; Defensive Player of the Year to Chris Fuller and the 2002 Maverick Award to senior infielder outfielder Eddie Signaigo.
The Mavericks finished with their best winning record ever, 13-1 in league and 27-7 overall. Ever since La Costa Canyon High School opened its doors in 1996 an Oseguera has played a prominent role on the Maverick Baseball team. Mike Oseguera from 1997 to 1999 and Paul Oseguera from 1999 to 2002 have played a key part in establishing a winning tradition at La Costa Canyon, which has included for Avocado League Championships in six years, with two 2nd place finishes. Mike Oseguera was the Most Valuable Player in each of his three seasons. He holds team records for the most career pitching wins(22) and the most career runs batted in. Mike also has the second highest on base percentage - .541, second most runs batted in in one season - 33, second most base on balls in one season - 22, second most career hits - 102, third most career home runs - 10, second lowest single season earned run average - 1.20, second most wins in one season - 8, second most career strike outs -218, and second most innings pitched in one season - 73. In his third year at the University of San Diego Mike recently pitched in his first NCAA Division I Tournament game and ended with a 5-2 record.
Younger brother Paul Oseguera was a four year Varsity letterman and holds individual team records for the highest single season batting average - .455, highest career batting average - .394, most hits in one season - 46, most runs batted in in one season - 34, most strike outs in one season - 99, most carer strike outs - 245, and most doubles in one season - 13. Paul also has the third lowest single season earned run average - 1.29, second most saves in one season - 3, second most strike outs in one season - 87, and the second most strike outs in one game - 15, all without pitching a single pitch in his senior year. Paul is looking to attend UCLA.
Notwithstanding the record numbers the intangible leadership qualities of the two Oseguera brothers will be the things that are missed the most.
