MAVERICKS IN THE MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT On June 8, 2008, Mike Kenny (Class of 2004) was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels with the 859th pick in the 28th round of the 2008 MLB First Year Player Draft. On June 6, 2006 Paul Oseguera(Class of 2002) was drafted in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the San Francisco Giants. Paul had the option of returning to UCLA for another year of eligibility but he signed with San Francisco. Paul reported to Arizona on June 16th and was then sent to Salem-Keiser in the Oregon short season instructional league. In his first year Paul appeared 16 games, with a total of 29.0 innings pitched and a record of 2 wins, 1 loss, with 2 saves, 9 walks, 39 strike outs, 12 earned runs on 25 hits with an ERA of 3.72. In the Fall Quarter Paul was back at UCLA taking classes towards finishing his degree. On June 3, 2003 Jessie Schmidt (Class of 2000)was drafted in the 10th round of the MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants. Jesse spent two years at Palomar and had one great year at Sacramento State where he set several team records. In June of 2002 Paul Oseguera became the first La Costa Canyon High School alumni drafted in the Major League player draft, but after under going Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow he elected to attend UCLA instead of signing as a low round pick with the Texas Rangers. Monday, July 20 MAVERICK ALUMNI PLAYING PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL 2009 MIKE KENNEY, (2004) has been assigned to the Los Angeles Angels Single A affiliate in Rancho Cucamonga of the California Single A League. In Twentysix Appearances and 39.1 innings pitched Mike has a record of 0-1, H , R , BB 20, SO 34, and an ERA of 4.35. On April 28, 2009 against the San Diego Padre affiliate the Lake Elsinore Storm, Mike pitched 2.33 innings, allowing 1 hit, 0 runs, walking 1 and striking out 2. Rancho Cucamonga visited the Lake Elsinore team for a weekend series on Friday May 22nd through Monday May 25th. PAUL OSEGUERA, (2004) stayed with the San Francisco extended Spring Baseball squad in Arizona, before being assigned out to the Augusta, Georgia Minor League Team. In a brief stint Paul pitched in 3 games, 19.0 inninngs, walking 5, striking out 25, while posting a 1-1 record with a 1.89 ERA. After being promoted back up to high Single A affiliate in San Jose, Paul started 7 games, pitching 40 innings while allowing 11 walks, and striking out 31, and starting with a 2-4 record and a 4.5 ERA. PAUL MACALUSO, (2000) returned to ITALY for another year of professional basebal and this year talked Jake Blalock of Rancho Bernardo in to going with him after JESSE SCHMIDT (2000) decided not to go back to ITALY for another year. 2008 PAUL OSEGUERA, LCC (2002) has been promoted to the Double A Connecticut Defenders affiliate of the San Francisco Giants playing in the Northern Division of the AA Eastern League. Paul finished the year with a couple stints on the disabled list with blister problems but he pitched in 19 games, with 8 starts, a 4.58 ERA, 3 wins with 2 losses, and stuck out 45 while walking only 29. MIKE KENNY, LCC (2004) was assigned to the Los Angeles Angels Arizona Rookie squad. Mike pitched in 16 games, had a 2-1 record, and in 18.2 innings of work he allowed 17 ER, 22 H and 9 BB while striking out 12. JESSIE SCHMIDT (2000) AND PAUL MACALUSO (2000) were once again playing professional baseball in ITALY. 2007 PAUL OSEGUERA. LCC (2002) has been promoted to the Single A San Jose Giants which plays in the California Advanced Single A league with the Lake Elsinore Storm. www.sjgiants.com Paul got his first start of the year on Sat. Apr 7th against Stockton. He went five innings, striking out 5, walking none, and giving up 3 earned runs on 3 hits. He got a no decision as San Jose lost the lead, rallied to tie, and then won it in the 13th inning. On Apr 12th Paul got the start in the home opener, going 5 & 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run, 3 hits, no walks and striking out 4, but another no decision as the Giants won in the bottom of the 16th inning. On April 18th Paul notched his first win by throwing another strong five innings, walking one, striking out 4 and allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits. On April 23 at Rancho Cucamonga Paul put in another quality start, pitching 5 shut out innings, on 3 hits, 1 BB and 5 strike outs. He left with a 4-0 lead but the San Jose bull pen could not hold the lead. On May 9th Paul pitched another 5 scoreless innings before yielding in the 6th inning to the relief pitchers who once again could not hold the lead. After 7 starts Paul is 2-1, and an Earned Run Average of only 2.72. Over 36.1 innings he has allowed 11 Earned Runs on 32 Hits, with only 2 HR's, while allowing only 4 walks while striking out 30. San Jose comes down to Lake Elsinore on June 7th-10th. JESSE SCHMIDT (LCC Class of 2000 is awaiting a Visa to go play professional baseball in Italy. 2006 PAUL OSEGUERA. LCC Class of 2002, four years at UCLA, drafted in the 16th round by San Francisco. Paul was assigned to the the Northwest short season in at Salem-Keiser, Oregon. In his first year of professional baseball Paul appeared in 16 games, with 29.0 innings pitched, posting a record of 2 wins, 1 loss, 2 saves, a 3.72 ERA, allowing 25 hits, 12 earned runs, 9 walks and 39 strike outs. JESSE SCHMIDT, LCC Class of 2000, two years at Palomar and one year at Sacramento State: In March of 2006 Jeese was back in Arizona for Spring Training with the Chicago Cubs Minor League camp trying to move up to the AA level as an outfielder. After an injury Paul did not get the promotion to AA and opted to go back to Sacramento State to get his degree. He can still play ball and was recruited by the Fullerton Flyers of the Golden baseball league to play right field. In a recent series at San Diego State stadiym against the Surf Dogs Paul hit well and played a strong outfield. In 5 games and 16 at bats he had 7 hits, 1 2b, 1 3b, 4 rbi's, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. In fifty games he batted .246, with an on base percentage of .359, AB 175, R 27, H 43, 2b 13, 3b 2, HR 3, RBI 22, BB 30, SO 40, and SB 5. In 2004 he played his second year of professional baseball with the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic Single A League. Jesse had one game where he went 3 for 4, 1 2b, 1 3b, and 4 rbi's. In 112 games with 410 at bats, Jesse hit .263 with 19 doubles, 3 triples, 7 home runs, 52 runs scored, 55 rbi's, 61 walks, 84 SO, and 10 stolen bases. Pitcher Jesse English of RBV High was also on this team. In 2003 Jesse played the short Single A season with the Salem Oregon Rookie ball team affiliated with the San Francisco Giants organization. Jesse played in 51 games, with 167 at bats, 42 hits, 4 home runs, 18 runs batted in and a .251 batting average. At Sacramento State Jesse set a new school record for hitting in 24 consecutive games. He finished with 81 hits, 53 runs scored, 16 Home Runs, 55 runs batted in, 16 steals and 12 outfield assists. 2005 PAUL JACINTO, Class of 1998 and a 2004 graduate of BYU, In 2005 he was invited to the San Diego Padres 2005 Spring camp but he was one of the final cuts. He had other offers but decided to ask his girl friend to marry him. In 2004 he signed with the Quebec Capitals of the Independent Northeast League. In nine starts Paul finished the year at 8-0, with a 0.79 Earned Run Average. In sixtynine innings Paul struck out 44 and walked only 8. Mike Kenny (Class of 2004) a starting pitcher for Loyola Marymount(6-7), On March 7th a healthy Mike pitched a career high seven innings, allowing only three runs on five hits, with one walk and three strike outs, to help the Lions beat the defending National Champion and currently 12th ranked Oregon State Beavers by a score of 12-3, and up Mike's season won-loss record to 3-0. Mike finished the 2008 season with a record of 5 wins 3 losses and 1 save. Mike pitched 59 innings in 15 appearances which include 10 starts, and had 29 strike outs. Sunday, May 27 2007 ALUMNI UPDATES JACKSON CHAPELONE (2002) SAN DIEGO CITY COLLEGE - Jackson played in 17 games, AB 28, H 4, R 2, Avg. .143, 2b 2, BB 5, SO 9, HbP 1. ANDREW NACARIO (2003) DARTMOUTH - 8-29-1, 5-15. The Big Green played their first game on 3-3-07, in a 1-9 loss in Cincinati the game was delayed twice by Snow. Andrew is starting in left field again this year for the Big Green. Andrew finished the year having started 33 games, 112 At Bats, Avg .223, R 6, H 25, 2b 3, rbi 9, BB 9, HbP 10, and SO 22. NICK BURKE (2004) PALOMAR - Inactive SCOTT CLEMENT (2004) UC SAN DIEGO - 37-25 Scott is listed on the roster as a versatile 1b, 3b, catcher and Desginated Hitter. Scott started 17 of the first 20 games for the Tritons, 20 overall, and for the season he hit .333, with AB 72, R 15, H 24, HR 4, 2b 5, 3b 1, RBI'S 17, BB 8, HbP 3, SO 10, and a SLG% of .613. MICHAEL KENNEY (2004) LOYOLA MARYMOUNT - (22-33) Michael had 23 relief appearances for the Lions, a record of 2 wins and 3 losses, pitching 27.1 inn., he allowed 30 Earned Runs , 36 H, 11 SO, and 19 BB. DOUG KONOSKE (2004) PEPPERDINE On February 11th Doug made his second appearance of the year for the Waves, pitching a perfect 9th inning in a 11-3 win over UC Davis. Doug finished the year with a total of 11 appearances, 8.0 full innings, 10 BB, 6 SO, 15 hits and 7 earned runs allowed. RUSS LOWELL (2005) LONG BEACH STATE - 36-18 (14-6), Russ had 1 appearance, one third of an inning, allowing one run and one hit, with one plate appearance himself resulting in a hit by pitch. MICHAEL CRUZ (2006) PALOMAR - 25-18 - Michael started seven games for Palomar, with a record of (4-1-0) he pitched in twelve games, IP 43.1, ER 20, ERA 4.15, H 55, BB 9, SO 16. JIMMY PIERCE (2006) PALOMAR - Jimmy played in 16 games, with 15 at bats, runs scored 2, hits 3, Avg. .200, 1 Sac F, 2 rbi and 7 SO. Tuesday, June 6 2006 ALUMNI UPDATES PAUL OSEGUERA (2002) Was back as the most consistent relief pitcher for UCLA (33-25). In 2006 Paul earned Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors with a team leading 29 appearances, a 1.66 ERA, with a record of 3 wins, 1 loss and 2 saves. He has pitched 48.2 innings, allowing 9 earned runs, on 41 hits, while striking out 47 against only 9 walks. On June 4th in the NCAA tournament against Missouri, Paul pitched 1.1 innings, allowing 1 inherited runner to score on one hit, and struck out 1. On May 16th Paul pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, with only 4 hits, 6 strike outs, and 1 walk to get his 3rd win of the year in a 8-4 victory over UC Irvine. In the two recent three game series with USC and Stanford, UCLA won 2 out of 3 in each one, and Paul pitched in two games of each series. In two appearances against the University of Miami, Paul pitched two and one-third innings, allowing 1 hit, no earned runs, walked none and struck out three. On Feb. 10th Paul entered the game in the 8th inning with the bases loaded and one out, with Miami leading 2-1. Paul gave up a sacrafice fly to left and got a ground ball to 2nd for the 3rd out. In the 9th inning Paul struck out the side. On Feb 28th Paul entered the game in the 8th inning with UCLA holding a 6-3 lead over Long Beach State. With one out and one runner on, Paul got a third to second to first double play. On Mar. 3rd at North Carolina State Paul entered in the 7th inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Paul struck out the batter to end the 7th and then over the 8th and 9th innings Paul allowed one hit and struck out three more to earn his first save. On Mar. 4th Paul entered the game in the bottom of the 9th inning with the Bruins leading by one, with one out and one runner on. Paul struck out two batters to end the game and earn his second save. From Mar 10th to the 12th, Paul pitched in all three games against 19th ranked Ole Miss, yielding his first earned run of the year in a 9-2 win, and getting 2 of the 3 outs in the 9th inning of the 6-4 win before yielding to a right handed pitcher who got the 3rd out. On Mar. 19th against San Diego State Paul pitched the 8th & 9th innings of a 9-1 win, giving up no runs on 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out three. On April 1st Paul got his first win against the University of Washington and on April 9th he got his second win against Washington State. CASEY STERK (2002) A senior at Wake Forest (33-22)Casey is in the mix in playing right and left field, haveing started 21 of the 35 games he has appeared in. On Feb 21st Casey played five innings, going 1 for 2 in a 4-3 win over Charlotte. On Mar 19th Casey started in left field in a 8-6 win over Baoston College Casey went 1-1, 1 h, 1 rbi and 3 BB. On April 16th Casey started in left field against Duke and went 3 for 5, with 3 runs scored and 1 run batted in. Casey finished the 2006 regular season with a .250 batting average, a .389 OBP, he has 20 hits, 3 doubles, 14 BB, 6 HbP, 17 R, 5 rbi's and only 7 SO in 80 at bats, and stole 10 of 13 attempted steals; with 37 put outs and 1 assist in the outfield. JACKSON CHAPELONE (2002) Jackson is making a come back at San Diego City Community College (20-15. In 18 appearances, Jackson has 29 AB, 5 R, 9 H, 2 rbi and a .310 Avg. PETER BETHEA (2003) Peter is on the roster as a catcher with St Mary's University of California. The Gaels (13-13) came to San Diego for a 3 game series with USD. JOEY BURKE (2003) Joey transfered from Palomar to Cal State Chico, (46-21, 20-13), which won the 2006 CCCA Conference Tournament, and on May 21st won the 2nd game of a double header with Cal State LA to win the Western Regional Championship and advance to the Division II College World Series in Montgomery Alabama for the 7th time in the last 10 years. Chico swept through the World Series brackets to reach the Championship game undefeated where they lost a late lead and then the game, 2-3 in extra innings to the No. 1 ranked University of Tampa(54-6). Joey started 8 of the first 9 games of the year for Chico, playing in the outfield and leading off. Joey was hitting .476, with 10 hits in 21 at bats, scoring 10 runs, 3 rbi's, and a .600 on base percentage with 6 walks when at a game in Las Vegas Joey fouled a pitch off his foot and then had to leave the game, and missed several weeks. He started two games over the Mar. 18th weekend and on Sat. went 2 for 2, with 1 BB and 2 runs scored. Joey recently came back to San Diego to play UCSD and although Chico lost 3 of 4 and fell a game behind in the standings Joey started all 4 games and collected a couple of hits and 2 rbi's. Joey finished the year having started 34 of the 39 games he has appeared in, batting .275, with an on base percentage of .391, with 120 AB, 33 H, 23 R, 2 2b, 10 rbi's, 18 BB, 9 SO, 3 HbP, 5 for 8 in SB/ATT, and 54 Put Outs and 2 assists. ANDREW NACARIO (2003) A junior at Dartmouth (20-19, 13-7), Andrew was back again this year starting in left field and batting near the top of the order. In their first two games (after a late start due to winter weather), Andrew batted .333, with 2 H, 1 2b, 1 R, and 1 RBI in 6 At bats. Coming out to rainy So. Cal. against Peperdine, Andrew helped his team beat Peperdine 3-2, but popped out to short against former team mate Doug Konoske. In a recent 13-8 win over Harvard Andrew got 1 hit, 1 BB, scored 2 runs and had 1 rbi. Andrew started 33 games, with a .282 Avg, 124 AB, 22 R, 35 H, 3 2b, 18 rbi's and 5 BB, 10 HbP, 11 SO, .358 OBP, 1 SB, 65 PO and 3 Assists. NICK BURKE (2004) Nick transfered to Palomar Community College (30-14)which entered the State Playoffs as the No. 6 Seed hosting Rio Hondo. On Feb. 21st Nick went 3 for 4 with 2 rbi's and 1 stolen base. In 29 games he is hitting .365 with 63 at bats, 23 hits, 9 runs, 12 rbi's, 5 2b, 1 3b, 5 BB, 14 SO, 3 HbP, 3 SB, and a .437 OB%. SCOTT CLEMENT (2004) Scott transferred from Palomar to the University of California at San Diego (35-24)which got off to a great start. Scott started 47 games at first base or designated hitter. In 182 at bats, Scott batted .341 with 15 Home Runs, 2 Triples, 9 Doubles, 52 runs batted in, 38 runs scored, 10 walks, 28 SO, 5 HbP, a .389 OB%m a ,659 Slg%, and 101 Put outs. On Feb. 18th Scott went 3 for 5, with 1 HR, 1 run scored and 4 rbi's. On Mar. 27th in a double header sweep of Chico, Scott went 6 for 8, with 3 Home Runs, 2 Doubles and 7 rbi's and he was named the CCAA League Player of the Week. MIKE KENNEY (2004) Mike appeared in two games as a relief pitcher for Loyola Marymount. DOUG KONOSKE (2004) Doug was limited by arm problems to two appearances. He made his first appearance of the year for Pepperdine University (19-11), pitching the 7th & 8th innings of a 6-2 win over Dartmouth, striking out two and allowing only a bunt single and a walk before getting former team mate Andrew Nacario to pop up to short for the third out. In his 2nd outing against Northwestern, Doug pitched the 8th and 9th innings, giving up one ER on two hits and one Strike out. App. 2, ERA 2.25, Inn 4.0, ER 1, H 3, BB 2, SO 3. KEVIN PATTERSON 92004) Kevin has transferred to Grossmont Community College which made it to the second round of the State Playoffs(29-16). In 11 games Kevin has 31 at bats, 4 R, 9 H, 3 2bs, 2 3b, 1 HR, 9 rbi's, 2 BB, 10 SO, a .290 batting avg. and a .613 slugging percentage. RUSS LOWELL (2005) Russ is on the roster at Long Beach State and red shirted. BRETT StAMOUR (2005) Brett is at San Diego Mesa Community College(14-24-1). In 29 games he had 84 at bats, scored 11 runs, 17 hits, 3 BB, 3 HbP, 8 SB, 15 rbi's and a .202 avg. NICK SIGNAIGO (2005) Nick is at San Diego City College (20-15). In 17 Games he had 31 at bats, 7 runs, 8 hits, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 BB, 7 SO, 1 HbP and .258 avg. Thursday, June 2 2005 ALUMNI UPDATES Lance Altshuler (2002) - Lance's comeback bid was cut short by a hand injury but in six games for Los Angeles Mission Community College, Lance had a .222 batting average with 18 AB, 4 hits, 2 rbi's, 2 BB, 3 SO, and 1 HbP. Matt Ryan (2002) - Matt is a redshirt sophomore at Sonoma State (19-24, 13-14) battling for playing time at catcher, with three starts in his 9 appearances, Matt has one hit in 11 at bats. Will Stoffel (2002) - After shoulder surgery in Nov. 2002 Will returned to the mound at Santa Barbara City College(17-11,7-9) against Pasadena City College, he pitched a scoreless 2 and 2/3rds innings, on one hit and one K, to help the Vaqueros hold on to an 11-6 win. On April 1st against Moorpark he threw 4 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out 3 and walking 2. In 5 appearances and 8 1/3rd innings Will has allowed 4 ER on 8 hits, 2 BB and 6 SO. Paul Oseguera (2002) - After elbow surgery in Sept 2002 and three years of rehab Paul is on the active roster for the UCLA Bruins(8-25) as a relief pitcher. He recently made his first college appearance against the defending NCAA Champion Cal State Fullerton, pitching 1 and 2/3rds innings, giving up no runs on 2 hits, 2 BB and 1 strike out. On April 16th Paul notched his first save. UCLA was leading UC Santa Barbara 9-8 in the bottom of the 9th inning. Paul entered the game with runners at second and third and only one out. Paul needed only 7 pitches to strike out the final two hitters. On April 20th Paul got his first start of the year at San Diego State. He pitched 4 innings and left with a 5-4 lead, allowing 5 hits and striking out 6. On May 10th Paul got his 3rd start of the year and his first collegiate win, against UC Irvine; working five innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out three. Casey Sterk (2002) - Casey has played in 53 of Wake Forest's 56 games, (28-30, 12-18) starting in right field, he finsihed the season with a batting average of .250, with AB 204, Hits 51, Home Runs 1, 2b 11, Runs 32, RBI's 24, BB 25, HbP 4, SO 32, OBP % .340, Stolen Bases 10 in 13 atempts, Put Outs 120, Assists 3, Errors 6. Casey started April off by helping the Deacons(16-20, 9-11)complete a 3 game sweep of Duke in which Casey had 5 hits and a 3 run home run, and 10 put outs in the field. The Deacons also beat #6 ranked Miami 13-6 and against #11 North Carolina Casey was 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored. In a recent 9-5 win over NC State Casey was 2 for 3 with a 2b and 2 runs scored. Wake Forest finished the year in the ACC Tournament with wins over Duke, Maryland and North Carolina, but lost to Georgia Tech and Florida State. Joey Burke (2003) - Joey was named an ALL Conference infielder in his second year at Palomar (34-11), starting most of the games at second base' and hitting lead off for the Pacific Coast Conference Champions with a regular season batting avg of .301, 3 HR, 2 2b, 22 rbi's, 27 r, 19 BB, 13 SO, 6 HbP,and 10 stolen bases. Joey was a big part of the Comets 8-3 run through the State Playoffs as they reached the State Championship game before falling short. Drew Logan (2003) - Drew is red shirting this year at Palomar while he strengthens his pitching arm. Andrew Nacario (2003) Andrew returns for his second year at Dartmouth College (14-21, 8-12). The Big Green were the preseason pick to win the Ivy League, but they did not play their first game until March 19th in Florida. In a 2-0 win over Bucknell the key defensive play of the game came in the first inning when Andrew, the starting left fielder, threw out a runner at home plate. Andrew has moved up to the lead off spot in the batting order and he has started 19 of their 21 games. He is batting .288, R-11, 2b-4, rbi's-7, BB-4, HbP-6, and 2 of 5 on SBA. Nick Burke (2004) - Nick has played in five games for the University of California at Riverside (28-27,11-10), in a loss at UCLA he had four put outs in the outfield, and a hit and one walk in two at bats, and has a .333 batting average. UC Riv. had wins over USC 8-3, UCLA and finished the year with a 6-2 win over the No. One ranked CSU Fullerton 6-2. Scott Clement (2004) - Scott has played in 23 games for State Finalist - Palomar (34-11), at designated hitter or back up catcher, with a regular season .314 batting average, 4 HR, 18 runs, 1 3b, 4 2b, 15 rbi's, 10 BB, and 14 SO. Michael Kenney (2004) - Michael is redshirting at Saddleback Community College, the defending State Community College champs. Doug Konoske (2004) - Doug has one start this year for Pepperdine University(38-21, 21-9), in a 4-3 loss to Long Beach State, Doug went 4 and 1/3 innings, giving up 1 earned run, on 4 hits, 1 BB and 2 strike outs. Doug has 19 appearances, a total of 34 1/3 innings, allowing 10 ER on 38 hits, 13 BB, 30 SO and a 2.62 ERA. Pepperdine started the NCAA regional tournament against USC. Kevin Patterson (2004) - Kevin is a reserve outfielder at Palomar(34-11), a finalist in the State playoffs, and played in 5 games with one start, he has 1 BB and 3 SO in 8 AB.
2004 ALUMNI UPDATES Paul Jacinto (1998) - Is a senior pitcher for BYU,(12-28,12-12). Last year in 2003 Paul Jacinto was 10-5, with a 4.14 ERA and he was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year. In 2004 Paul was named to the All Mountain West Conference Team. With 14 starts and a total of 21 appearances, Paul has pitched the second most innings(94) on the team. Paul at 3-9, and 3 saves, with a 5.55 ERA, 70 K's and only 21 BB, has not been very lucky. On April 15th Paul earned his first win of the year in his first relief appearance; he pitched the last 5 and two thirds innings of an 11th inning 7-6 win over San Diego State, striking out 4 and allowing 1 run on 6 hits. On April 2nd, Paul pitched a complete game, 7 hitter, allowing 1 solo HR in a 0-1 loss to New Mexico. Head Coach Vince Law, "Paul pitched a splendid game, one of the best games he's pitched at BYU." In March Paul pitched 7 inn. against Fresno State, allowing only 3 earned runs, 2 K's and 3 BB's but got a no decision. On Mar. 27th against Utah, Paul took a 4-2 lead into the 9th and was relieved after yielding a lead off single, and again after allowing only 3 earned runs, 3 K's and 1 BB, got a no decision. On the last weekend of the regular season on May 20 Paul got his 3rd win, pitching 6 shut out innings against Air Force, and then came back a day later to pitch a scoreless 9th inning for his 3rd save of the year in a 10-9 win. Paul pitched two scoreless innings in the MWC Tournament. Blake Read (2000) - Is a Senior relief pitcher for the University of California Bears(25-31, 9-15) and recently earned his first win of the year by pitching two innings in relief against #5 ranked Arizona State. On May 13th Blake pitched 1 and one-third innings, giving up 2 runs in a 7-4 loss to USD in San Diego. Blake appeared in 20 games, a total of 24.0 innings, and an ERA of 6.00, a record of 2 wins and no losses, with 16 K's and 7 BB's. Paul Oseguera (2002) - Is still on scholarship at UCLA undergoing rehab after a second minor surgery on his pitching elbow and in May finally started throwing off a mound. Casey Sterk (2002) - Started all 50 games in left field field for the Wake Forest Deacons(17-33,4-20) of the ACC, and had one hit and one rbi in the 12-15 loss to Maryland in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Wake Forest was 13-10 at home but only 2-19 on the road. After 50 games and 168 at bats Casey finished with a batting average of .256 with 4 home runs, 2 triples, 6 doubles, 28 runs batted in, 34 runs scored, 15 base on balls, 87 put outs, 2 assists in the outfield, and he stole 5 bases in 5 attempts. On April 15th he helped the Deacons to a 4-1 over the #24 ranked North Carolina State with one solo home run and a walk. In a 10-11 loss to Florida State Casey was 1 for 4 and scored 2 runs. Matt Ryan (2002) - Is a redshirt freshmen at Sonoma State, recently got his first at bat against San Francisco State and made the trip down to play University of California San Diego. Sonoma State (39-28, 25-15) entered the CCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed but lost to Chico State in the Tournament Championship game. Sonoma State and Chico State both advanced to the Western Regional Tournament in Pueblo Colorado where once again Sonoma was eliminated by Chico State in the final game. Chico State advanced to the NCAA Division Two College World Series Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama but they were eliminated in two games. Will Stoffel (2002)- Is a redshirt freshmen at Santa Barbara City College(19-16,11-14), where he is a reserve outfielder, started two games, and in 10 games he batted .154 with 2 doubles and 2 rbis's. Although still rehabing his pitching shoulder after last year's shoulder surgery, Will made his first relief appearance in April, pitching to 2 batters and giving up 1 hit. Santa Barbara won ten more games in 2004 then they did in 2003. Joey Burke (2003) - Is the starting 2nd basemen at Palomar Community College(21-14,12-10). On Sat. Feb 28th Joey went 4 for 4, with 2 doubles, 2 walks, one rbi and three runs scored. Joey unfortunately broke his right thumb fielding a ground ball but after having spent a couple of weeks in a cast he rejoined the team before the end of April in time to help spark a run towards the second place playoff spot. In 25 games Joey is batting .300 with 20 runs scored, 8 rbi's, 15 BB's and 4 SB's. Palomar made the State Playoffs as the second place team out of their league but lost in the first round 8-7 to 5th ranked El Camino JC. Drew Logan (2003) - Is pitching at Palomar(21-14,12-10). Drew has appeared in 7 games, has 1 start, a 1-0 record, and in 19.1 innings has struck out 5 and walked only 3, with an ERA of 4.66. Palomar lost in the first round of the State Playoffs to El Camino JC 8-7. Andrew Nacario (2003) - Split time in the Outfield at Dartmouth College (25-17, 15-7)in New Hampshire which made the Ivy League Championship series against Princeton but lost in extra innings. During an early 11 game trip to Florida, Andrew had 1 hit against Iowa, 2 hits and a run scored against the University of Florida and 2 rbi's against Northwestern. Andrew recently went 1 for 4 in a win against Cornell with 1 run scored and 1 rbi. Andrew started 15, and played in 29 of their 42 games. He finished the year hitting .258, in 62 at bats, with 15 runs scored, 9 rbi's, 1 2b, 1 3b, 9 BB, 3 HBP, 10 SO and he was successfull in 1 of 3 attempts to steal a base. Wednesday, March 30 MAVERICKS COACHING IN 2005 The 2005 College Baseball Season finds Chad Addison(LCC-1998,UCSD-2002)and Mike Oseguera(LCC-1999,USD-2003) now helping out for the second year as Assistant Baseball Coaches at University of California San Diego. Victor Yoshida (LCC-1998) who played baseball at Palomar and Cal Poly Pomona has returned to the La Costa Canyon campus to coach the Freshmen baseball team. |
