Sunday, June 7 POWAY WINS CIF CHAMPIONSHIP Poway's luck continued to hold as they edged Rancho Buena Vista 4-3 with another rally in the bottom of the 7th inning. Thursday's Semi Final Games Poway 11 Rancho Bernardo 0 Rancho Buena Vista 5 Vista 3 Tuesday's Playoff Games Rancho Bernardo 2 Poway 0 Vista 6 Rancho Buena Vista 0 Friday, May 29 09 Season Ends in RB The Mavs lost a hard-fought game by a final 4-6 score to end their CIF run. Michael Swanner went the distance on the mound for LCC, striking out 4 and allowing only 3 hits over 6 innings. RB jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 3 innings on 2 walks and 2 home runs, but the Mavs battled back with a run in the 4th on a leadoff double by Will Swanner and a sac fly by Matt Lindberg. LCC opened the 6th with a leadoff solo home run by Mitch Tybroski and then loaded the bases on walks to Phil Evans and Swanner and a single by Grant Jochem. Evans scored on a wild pitch and Swanner came home on a balk to tie the game at 4-4. The Mavs were unable to hold RB in the bottom of the frame, allowing 2 more runs on 2 walks and a single. LCC threatened in the 7th on an Evans single, but were unable to move him around, and the game and season ended. Tybroski finished strong, going 2 for 4, and Will Swanner scored 2 of the Mav runs. Wednesday, May 27 Heartbreak in Poway The Mavs lost 7-8 in a miracle 7th inning comeback by the Titans in Poway. Leading most of the game, La Costa brought a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the 7th. Max MacNabb pitched a 2 hitter over six innings for the Mavs, allowing just 2 runs and striking out 5. The bullpen was not able to hold the lead, however, and La Costa will attempt the tougher route through the lower bracket beginning Friday. The Mav offense started strong, loading the bases in the first and scoring 3 in the second on hits by Zach Gage, Mitch Tybroski, Phil Evans, and Will Swanner. After adding one in the 3rd, La Costa put up 3 more runs in the 5th on hits by Gage, Kevin Hill, an 2-RBI double by Tybroski and a sac fly by Swanner. Things unraveled in the 7th on some disputed calls, a few walks, and some timely hitting by the Titans. Gage finished the game going 2 for 4 with an rbi and 2 runs scored. Evans had 3 hits, scored a run and drove in 1. Tybroski had 2 big doubles, scored a run and drove in 3. Tuesday, May 26 La Costa Canyon starts CIF tourney with play-in win The Mavs combined a strong offensive showing with 6 power innings of pitching by Garrett Hughes to end the Eastlake season. La Costa Canyon scored 9 runs in the first 4 innings to put the Titans in the hole early. They finished with 11 hits and 4 walks. Kevin Hill had 3 hits, scored twice and drove in the game winner in the 2nd inning. Mitch Tybroski and Phil Evans each scored twice, while Will Swanner and Grant Jochem each drove in 3 runs. Hughes allowed 1 run on just 2 hits while striking out 5. Jake Webb closed the 7th for La Costa Canyon, striking out 2 Titans. Wednesday, May 20 Mavs end league play with home win La Costa pitchers combined for their second straight shutout of the Escondido Cougars, sending the senior day crowd home with a 7-0 win. Jake Raffaele started things off with 4 innings of 1 hit ball. Cody Parks, Jake Webb and Parker Johnson finished the mound work for the Mavs. The La Costa offense struck again in the first inning on walks by Will Swanner and Grant Jochem, an rbi double by Matt Lindberg to score Swanner and a wild pitch to score Jochem. The Mavs picked up 2 more runs in the 4th with an rbi single by Justin Graeber and a sac fly by Phil Evans. Garrett Hughes continued his power show in the 5th with a 3 run opposite field bomb that completed the La Costa scoring. The Mavs finish the regular season with a 22-8 record, 9-6 in the Avocado League. Monday, May 18 Mav pitchers no-hit Escondido in 25-0 blowout After 3 straight losses to Torrey Pines and an earlier loss to Escondido at home last month, La Costa came in fired up and never looked back, evening their series with the Cougars. Garrett Hughes led 4 Mav pitchers in a 7 inning no-hit shutout by working the first 4 innings and allowing just a single walk against 4 strike outs. The final 3 innings were shared by Cody Parks, Parker Johnson, and Cory Soto. The Mav offense brought 54 hitters to the plate in 7 innings, collecting 20 hits, 9 walks and 2 hit by pitchers. Hughes led the attack with 2 home runs and 5 RBI’s. Jake Webb had a 3 run homer in his only at bat in the 7th. Zach Gage had 4 hits including 2 doubles and drove in 4 runs. Justin Graeber continued his hot streak with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored. Will Swanner scored 3 runs and his brother, Michael, collected his first hit of the season. Chris Doyle had 2 hits and scored twice. The Mavs finish league play on Wednesday at home against Escondido. Saturday, May 16 Torrey makes it 3 straight over Mavs 2 solo home runs were not enough to prevent a sweep by the Falcons, who spoiled a fine pitching effort by Michael Swanner and squeaked out an 8 inning, 3-2 victory at home. Swanner gave up only 5 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings, striking out 5. The Mavs carried a 1 run lead into the bottom of the 7th on home runs by Justin Graeber and Grant Jochem, but the Falcons tied it up with a lead off single, a sac bunt, a stolen base, and an RBI ground out. The Mavs failed to score in the top of the 8th, setting the stage for the dramatic Torrey comeback. Bright spots for the La Costa offense were 2-hit outings by Graeber(2-2), Jochem(2-4) and Ryan Fessel(2-3). Thursday, May 14 La Costa Canyon in tough loss at home The Mav bats stayed quiet in the second round of the Torrey Pines series, producing just 1 run on 4 scattered hits. Max McNabb pitched well enough to win, giving up just 3 unearned runs in the first 5 innings before leaving it to the bullpen. He started slow, walking 4 in the first but ended with 9 strike outs against just 3 hits. Jake Webb pitched well in the 6th, but allowed a run on 2 hits, and Cody Parks closed out the 7th, retiring 3 straight batters. La Costa left 8 runners stranded, scoring only 1 in the 4th inning on 2 straight walks and a sac fly by Zach Gage. Final score, Torrey Pines 4, Mavs 1 Tuesday, May 12 Mavs drop opener at Torrey Pines La Costa started strong in the first inning, scoring all 4 of their runs on 5 hits. Mitch Tybroski and Phil Evans opened the game with singles and then Will Swanner took an outside fastball deep to right for a 3 run homer. Grant Jochem followed with a single, advanced to second on a single by Garrett Hughes, made it to third on a pass ball and scored on Zach Gage’s sac fly to right. That ended the Maverick offense. One hit by Justine Graeber in the 6th was not enough to score more runs. Garrett Hughes went 5 and 2/3 innings on the mound but gave up 7 runs on 8 hits. He struck out 7 and hit 3 batters. Jake Raffaele, Parker Johnson, and Jake Webb pitched in relief. Final score 4-9. Saturday, May 9 La costa completes sweep of Fallbrook with double header wins Max McNabb kept the Warrior offense under control, striking out 10 in 6 innings and allowing only 2 runs on 6 scattered hits. The Mav offense gave him plenty of run support. Garrett Hughes’ 2 run homer in the 2nd started the 9 run, 10 hit attack. Zach Gage followed with a double and then scored on 2 base on balls and 2 hit batters to cap a 4 run inning. 3 straight singles in the 5th by Will Swanner, Grant Jochem, and Matt Lindberg started a 4 run inning, highlighted by back to back rbi singles by Kyle Durrschmidt and Kevin Hill. The Mavs added 1 more run in the 6th when Phil Evans got on base with his 2nd hit by pitch of the day and scored on a Lindberg liner to center. Parker Johnson closed the door on Fallbrook in the 7th with a solid relief outing. Final score, 9-4. In game 2, Michael Swanner and Jake Raffaele teamed to shut out the Warriors, who stranded 9 baserunners. Swanner allowed 5 hits in his 5 innings, striking out 3, while Raffaele struck out 1 in the last 2 innings. All of the Mav scoring came in the 2nd. Following walks to Garrett Hughes and Zach Gage and a single by Justin Graeber, Bobby Zalud slammed a double to deep left to score all three runners. That would be all the run support Swanner needed to pick up his 3rd win of the season. The 3-0 victory pushes the Mav season record to 20-5. He struck out 9 while allowing just 5 hits. 2 of the hits were solo home runs, accounting for the 2 Warrior runs. Michael Swanner closed the 7th inning, striking out 3. The Mav offense struck in the 2nd inning with a hit batter, 3 walks and a 2 run single by Mitch Tybroski. Phil Evans started off the 5th with a walk, Will Swanner followed with a single, Grant Jochem bounced a shot off the 3rd baseman’s glove to plate Evans and Matt Lindberg drove in Swanner with a grounder to 2nd. La Costa scored 2 more in the 6th on 2 more errors by the Fallbrook 3rd baseman and an RBI single by Swanner. Lindberg added a solo homer in the 7th to complete the Mav scoring. Swanner finished the day going 3 for 4 to lead the offense. Thursday, April 30 Escondido takes opener at La Costa, 5-4 in 10 innings Max McNabb struck out 8 in the first 4 innings and the Mavs jumped out to a 3-0 lead before giving up 2 unearned runs in the 4th and finally falling behind in the 6th. Will Swanner opened the bottom of the 7th with a double to left and then scored the tying run on a clutch double by Kevin Hill, sending the game into extra innings. Escondido scored a run in the top of the 10th and the Mavs were unable to answer. Phil Evans singled and advanced to 3rd with just one out, but 2 ground outs could not score him and the game ended. Grant Jochem went 3 for 5 with a home run and a double. Hill ended up with 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. Michael Swanner pitched 4 strong innings in relief and struck out 9. The Mavs record falls to 17-5. Tuesday, April 28 Mavs complete sweep at San Pasqual La Costa combined a strong 1st inning offense and 6 innings of Garrett Hughes to overpower San Pasqual on the road. Mitch Tybroski and Zach Gage got on base to start the game and Phil Evans blasted a line drive home run down the 3rd base line to make it 3-0. Matt Lindberg doubled, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and then scored on a Will Swanner chopper to short, giving the Mavs enough offense for the win. Hughes struck out 8, while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, pushing his record to 7-1. Jake Raffaele closed the game in the 7th, fanning 2 Eagles. La Costa added single runs in the 3rd, 5th, and 7th, the last a solo shot to left by Will Swanner. Final score, 7-3. Thursday, April 23 La Costa over San Pasqual at home The temperature on the field was 30 degrees cooler than their game earlier in the week, and the Mav bats cooled as well, banging out only 3 hits in a 3-2 victory. Jake Raffaele and Michael Swanner teamed up to hold the Eagles to only 2 runs on 6 hits. La Costa opened the scoring in the 4th inning with singles by Mitch Tybroski and Zach Gage. A 3 base error by the Eagle’s right fielder scored both players. San Pasqual scored a run in the 5th and then tied the game with another run in the 6th. Tybroski lead off the home half of the 6th with a base on balls and moved to 3rd on a single by Phil Evans. Grant Jochem wore out the Eagle starter with a 9 pitch at bat and finally loaded the bases by taking a ball in the shoulder. Matt Lindberg hit the next pitch to center for a sac fly to plate the game winner. The Eagles threatened with a baserunner in the top of the 7th, but an Evans/Zalud/Doyle double play preserved the win for the Mavs. La Costa is now 16-4 for the season, and 3-2 in the Avocado league. Tuesday, April 21 Mavs open San Pasqual series with 6-0 win Garrett Hughes turned in another impressive game with his 6th win on the mound and 2 RBI’s at the plate, powering the Mavs to a road win. He allowed only 3 hits and struck out 10 in 6 innings. Phil Evans completed the shutout with a strong 7th inning in relief. Will Swanner also had 2 RBI’s, scored a run, and caught 7 tough innings in the 95 degree heat. Kyle Durrschmidt and Bobby Zalud each had 2 hits and scored runs for the Mavs. Saturday, April 18 Comeback falls short at home Mission Hills scored 8 runs in the first 7 innings but the Mavs saved all their offense for the bottom of the 7th. Hits by Tybroski and Evans set up an RBI single by Grant Jochem. After Will Swanner was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Garrett Hughes narrowed the lead to 8-5 with a massive grand slam down the line in right. Singles by Graeber and McNabb and a fielders choice by Kevin Hill were followed by an RBI double by Mitch Tybroski, that just kicked up chalk on the left field line. Down by 2 runs, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and Zach Gage at the plate with a full count, the Grizzly reliever appeared to balk in a run with a move to 3rd. Neither umpire made the call, however, and the pickoff at 3rd base ended the game in a storm of controversy, the Mavs down 8-6. Michael Swanner pitched 5 innings for La Costa, and got help from Cody Parks and Parker Johnson in the 6th and 7th.

Thursday, April 16 Mavs waste McNabb gem at Mision Hills Max McNabb blanked the Grizzlies over 7 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 8, despite taking a line drive off of his leg in the 2nd inning. The offense struggled, however, posting no runs in the first 8 innings on just 3 hits. Going into the 9th tied 0-0, La Costa finally got on the board with 1 run on 3 straight singles by Will Swanner, Garrett Hughes and Matt Lindberg picking up the RBI. The Mavs defense was unable to hold on in the bottom of the frame, allowing 2 runs on a walk, a double, and RBI ground out, and an RBI walk-off single. The 1-2 loss puts the Mav record at 15-3. Tuesday, April 14 Mavs open Avocado play with 8-3 win Garrett Hughes powered La Costa to a victory over Mission Hills with a 3 run homer to open the scoring and 5 shutout innings on the mound. It was a cold, drizzly afternoon, and neither team scored until the 4th inning, when Hughes followed singles by Grant Jochem and Will Swanner with a towering blast to right center. Jochem added to the Mav tally in the 5th with a 2 run shot to left that finished the Grizzly starter. Mission Hills responded in the 6th with 3 runs on 5 hits, but Jake Raffaele entered in relief and stopped the rally. The La Costa offense went back to work in the bottom of the 6th with a double by Hughes, an RBI triple by Matt Lindberg, a sac fly by Kevin Hill, and an RBI single by Zach Gage, taking the score to the final 8-3. Michael Swanner closed the door on Mission Hills in the 7th to preserve the win. Thursday, April 9 Mavs drop Lion's semi for 2nd loss La Costa came up on the short end of a 3-2 final score against Temecula Valley in a Lion’s Tournament semifinal game at University of San Diego. The Golden Bears opened the scoring with a run in the 1st and the Mavs responded with 2 in the 3rd inning on a double by Kevin Hill, an RBI single by Mitch Tybroski, and an RBI grounder by Phil Evans. Jake Raffaele turned in a gutsy performance on the mound, going 6-1/3 and allowing only one run on 5 hits in the first 6 innings. Fatigue caught up in the 7th, however, when he walked the first 2 hitters then allowed a single to load the bases before being relieved. A 2-out single drove in the winning runs for Temecula. The Mavs had 2 baserunners in the bottom of the inning on hits by Kyle Durrshmidt and Hill, but were unable to move them around. The loss puts the La Costa record at 13-2. Wednesday, April 8 Mavs move to 3-0 in Lions with win over RB The Swanner brothers had big days as LCC upended Rancho Bernardo 9-5. The win over RB was the second of the year by the Mavericks. Michael Swanner went 5 2/3 innings for the win. Will Swanner went 2-2 with a home run, double and two walks. He also threw out the only runner that tried to steal. Jake Raffaele entered in releif and gave up just one hit while recording 4 strike outs to get the save. Grant Jochem and Mitch Tybroski both went 2-4 with a double. Phillip Evans, Justin Graeber and Kevin Hill all added to the offense. The win brings the LCC record in the Lions Tournament to 3-0 and 13-1 overall. Tuesday, April 7 LCC handles Silverado, Nevada The Mavericks boosted their record to 12-1 in beating the visiting Skyhawks from Siverado Nevada 7 - 0. Max McNabb threw 6 scoreless innings, striking out 11 and only giving up 4 hits. McNabb's record moved to 5-0 and lowered his ERA to below 1. Jake Webb came in relief and kept the shutout intact. On offense, Garrett Hughes hit his fourth home run of the year, Phillip Evans and Zach Gage both went 2-4 with 2 RBI's, Kevin Hill 2-2 (1 RBI), Mitch Tybroski hit an RBI double and Ryan Fessel went 1-3 with a run scored. The win ups LCC's record in the LIONS Tournament to 2-0. Monday, April 6 Mavs open Lions Tourney with win La Costa entered the 6th inning down 1-0 to a strong Grossmont team. After 2 walks and 2 singles tied the score, Will Swanner supplied the heroics with a towering grand slam to right-center to put Mavs on top for good. Garrett Hughes went the distance on the mound in another strong start, holding the Hillers to 1 run on 3 hits. He struck out 6 batters. The Mavs scored 2 more in the 7th on a bunt single by Mitch Tybroski, an RBI double by Zach Gage and a sac fly by Grant Jochem to post a final 7-1 victory. Wednesday, April 1 Mav bats pound San Marcos La Costa picked up a 21-1 win Wednesday at San Marcos. Max McNabb started on the mound and went 4 innings, picking up the win. He allowed just 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 7. Brown, Webb, and Raffaele each contributed shutout relief innings. The offense exploded for 18 hits and drew 13 walks. Jochem, Tybroski, Hughes, and Evans hit home runs driving in 12 of the Mav runs. Most starters left after the 4th inning but the Mavs scored 10 more runs. 15 players hit safely and/or scored runs. Monday, March 30 Ramona hands La Costa first loss The Bulldog starter shut out the Mavs hitters for 5 innings, allowing just 1 hit. Garret Hughes kept La Costa in the game, giving up only 1 run on 2 hits before getting into trouble in the 6th inning. The Mav relievers were unable to stop the surge and Ramona built up a comfortable lead. Friday, March 27 Mavs take Orange Glen in mismatch La Costa scored 16 runs in the first 4 innings to bury Orange Glenn, 17-1 at home. Jake Raffaele started for the Mavs and got the win. David Brown, Jake Webb and Cody Parks each pitched a shutout relief inning. The starters left the game after the 3rd inning. Chris Doyle had a nice RBI triple and Justin Graeber went 3 for 3 with a double to right center. Wednesday, March 25 Mavs in comeback win over Valley Center La Costa opened the North County Tournament with an 11-3 win. Max McNabb held Valley Center to 2 runs on 5 hits over 6 innings. The Jaguars shut the Mavs out and led until the 6th inning in a game that grew increasingly tense for the home club. Garrett Hughes opened the bottom of the frame getting hit by a pitch and was followed by game-tying RBI singles by Will Swanner and Kyle Durrschmidt. At this point the wheels came off for Valley Center as the Mavs finished with 11 runs in the inning. Highlights were 2 run doubles by Phil Evans and Hughes and a 3 run double by Ryan Fessel. Parker Johnson closed the game on the mound for the Mavs. Monday, March 23 Hughes powers Mavs to 3-2 victory at RB Garret Hughes threw a complete game against Rancho Bernardo, allowing only 2 runs on 6 hits. He struck out 14 and shut out the Broncos for 5 innings. The Mavs scored 1 run in the 2nd inning on 3 RB errors and added 2 more on solo homers by Will Swanner and Phil Evans. The win pushes the Mav record to 7-0. Saturday, March 21 Mavs dominate final, 10-0 over Scripps Ranch The Pirate/Falcon tournament final was all La Costa Canyon as the Mavs take their 2nd straight title. The early innings belonged to the Swanner brothers with Michael shutting out Scripps Ranch from the mound and Will swatting 2 home runs in his first 2 at bats. Jake Rafaelle entered in the 4th and continued the shutout for 3 more innings until Cory Soto completed the 7th. Garret Hughes and Phil Evans also went yard at the Oceanside park. 8 Maverick players hit safely and 7 scored. Will Swanner finished the day 3 for 4, scoring 3 runs and driving in 3. Tuesday, March 17 Mavs bury Pt. Loma with 18-hit attack, advance to final La Costa advances to the Pirate/Falcon championship game with a 15-3 win at home. Max McNabb pitched a strong 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 8. Jake Webb and Cody Parks each worked a steady inning in relief. After the Pointers opened the game scoring 2 in a strong first inning, the Maverick bats came alive, producing 15 runs in the first 4 innings. Almost everyone contributed to the show, but a few standouts must be mentioned. Phil Evans went 4 for 5 with 3 doubles, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI’s. Will Swanner had 2 towering doubles and 3 RBI’s. Mitch Tybroski and Zach Gage each scored 3 runs, while Grant Jochem and Matt Lindberg each drove in 3 runs. The bats are back! Saturday, March 14 Mavs move to 4-0 record with 9-0 win over Mira Mesa Garrett Hughes and Parker Johnson combined to shut out the Marauders, allowing just 3 hits. Garrett went 5 innings and struck out 7. The Mav offense stuggled against the Mira Mesa starter, managing only 2 runs on 1 hit by Hughes. In the 5th inning the Marauder defense loosened and their relievers had control problems. The Mavs scored 7 runs on 2 errors, 5 straight walks, and a hit by Bobby Zalud. Overall, the Mavs had just 2 hits and struck out 10 times in 6 innings. Thursday, March 12 Mavs beat Great Oak 4-1 Mavs and Great Oak played 7 innings to a 1-1 tie. Michael Swanner pitched 5 innings, giving up only 3 hits and one run. Bobby Zalud led off the 6th inning with a clutch single and was driven in by Zach Gage to tie the score. In the top of the 8th the Mavs scored 3 runs on 4 singles by Gage, Evans, Jochem, and Lindberg. Jake Raffaele threw 3 shutout innings in relief to notch the win. Mavs move to 3-0 for the tournament. Tuesday, March 10 Mavs beat Calexico in slugfest The LCC Mavericks beat the visiting Calexico Bull Dogs 18-2. Max MacNabb threw 4 shut out innings to get the win, recording 6 strikeouts and only giving up 1 hit. Excellent relief by Cory Soto, Jacob Raffaele and Parker Johnson each going one inning. The Mavericks scored 18 runs over 6 innnings. The hitting attack was led by Zach Gage 3-4, with a triple and 4 RBI, Will Swanner 2-3 with a double and homerun, Garrett Hughes 2-4 with a double, Ryan Fessel 2-4. Other extra base hits went to Kevin Hill (triple) and Phillip Evans (double). Six other players each contributed one hit.
