After stranding runners in consecutive innings, the Mavericks added 6 big runs in the bottom of the 5th on hits by Lyon, Solomon, Winters, Hinkle, Schreiber, and Martin.  The Mavericks then sealed it in the 6th with another run when Balderas singled and was hit in by Miller's RBI single.  The final score was LCC 9, Valhalla 3.

Mavericks Beat Valhalla in Game 2 of 2012 CIF Playoffs

The Mavericks faced off against the Valhalla Norsemen in second round play of the 2012 CIF Playoffs.  The Norsemen proved they were a serious contender when they started the game with 3 straight singles, a deep sacrifice fly and a perfectly executed suicide squeeze to score 2 runs in the top of the first inning.  The Mavericks replied in the bottom of the 1st with a run of their own after Martin hit a long double and then scored on an overthrow error.

In the 4th inning the Mav's added 2 more when Winters hit, Miller reached on an error and Schrieber pushed a run in with a basehit.  In the 5th the Mavs scored two more when Solomon started the inning with a triple down the right field line.   Balderas followed with a base on balls and Winters collected another RBI with a single.  The Mav's had yet another 2-run inning in the 6th when Martin and Balderas both had singles and Winters pushed them both across the plate with a double.  The game ended with a final score of 7-2.

After facing adversity in the first inning, Andrew Hinkle gathered himself and was almost unhittable for the rest of the game.  He gave up 4 hits on the day (just 1 after the first inning), and he struck out 9 batters.  He got the complete game victory.

The Mavericks will now play on Tuesday at 3:30 against Valhalla.   (See brackets below.)

La Costa Canyon Beats Ramona in CIF Playoff Game 1

LCC entered the 2012 CIF Playoffs as the #2 seed, giving them home field advantage against Ramona.  LCC jumped on the board with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st after Martin and Solomon walked and Winters hit a line shot for 2 RBI's.  LCC added 2 more in the 3rd after Balderas walked, Miller singled, and Armstrong walked.  Lyon got an RBI with a bases-loaded walk and Martin drove in a run with an RBI single.

Ramona posted 4 runs in the top of the 5th to tie the game.  Neither team could muster a run and the game went in to extra innings.

The Mav's scored in the bottom of the 9th when Hinkle started the inning with a base hit single, and Balderas followed with another single - Miller ended the game with a walk-off RBI single down the right field line.  The final score was Mavs 5, Bulldogs 4.

Mavericks Clinch League Title With Win Over Oceanside

Story by Rob Terranova, North County Times:

For the second consecutive year, the La Costa Canyon High baseball team won the Avocado West League title, beating Oceanside 4-0 on Wednesday at home.

The Mavericks (18-9, 9-3) jumped on the scoreboard early with four runs in the first inning, and that would prove to be enough for senior starter Andrew Hinkle, who scattered seven hits while only walking one batter.

"(Hinkle) has really stepped it up for us this year," Mavericks coach Justin Machado said. "He pounds the zone. He gets a ton of ground balls. He really has put it all together and stayed consistent all year long.

"He's got a great presence on the mound."

Machado said strong pitching and solid defense is why his team was in position to claim the league championship again.

"Every team in this league had a lot of good pitching, and every game we played was well contested," said Machado. "But our guys went out and competed every time they took the mound, and the defense stood tall behind them, and anytime you do that you have a chance to win."

CARLSBAD 4 LA COSTA CANYON 3

John Maffei - North County Times 5-13-12

Avocado West League baseball heavyweights Carlsbad High and La Costa Canyon met Saturday afternoon with the league title on the line. And after 11 innings and 3 1/2 hours, Carlsbad's Matt Wezniak singled home the winning run to cap a day in which he pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief as the Lancers scored a 4-3 victory that left them in control of their play-off destiny.

"It felt like Rocky IV, where Rocky goes to Russia and the two (fighters) stand in the middle of the ring knocking each other around," Wezniak said.

The victory forged a tie atop the league standings between No. 10 - ranked Carlsbad (8-3, 19-8) and La Costa Canyon (8-3, 17-9-1) with one league game remaining. It also gave the Lancers a victory in the three game series with the Mavericks, meaning if the two teams finish tied, Carlsbad would be credited as the league champion for playoff-seeding purposes, (earning the higher seed over division I league rival Rancho Buena Vista)

And what a three-game series it was.

Carlsbad won 1-0 on Tuesday, LCC won 4-2 in nine innings on Thursday before the Lancers rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win Saturday.

Wezniak, who started Saturday's game as the DH, had pitched just 5 2/3 innings this season. But with pitching thin in the third game of the week, the sophomore  left-hander entered in the fifth inning. He worked out of a jam in the fifth and didn't allow a hit until Danny Martin singled with two outs in the bottom of the 11th.

"The last few innings were a boxing match," Wezniak said. "We knew LCC was a good team. We knew we weren't going to roll over them. But this series was special."

Wezniak walked four and struck out five, allowing just one LCC runner to reach second base. "I wasn't trying to strike guys out," Wezniak said. In the ninth, tenth and eleventh innings, I tried to block everything out. I felt good because the adrenaline was pumping. I tried to use my fielders and Thomas Eshelman, my catcher, is so stable."  It was Eshelman who ignited the Carlsbad offense.

Andrew Hinkle drove in three runs to stake La Costa Canyon to a 3-0 lead, which it held until Carlsbad scored a run in the sixth inning on a balk.  Addison Domingo reached on a two out single later in the inning and Eshelman followed with a long homer to left field to tie the game. " I knew a fastball was coming in the situation and just sat on it," said Eshelman who went 3 for 5 with a double. "This win, tying for the league title, is so big because Carlsbad hasn't won a league title in (seven) nineteen years. It is a huge confidence boost."

Carlsbad coach Chris Greene threw Wezniak into an extra-inning game against Rancho Bernardo in March "without even seeing him throw a bullpen. The guy has nerves of steel," Greene said. "He has been clutch for us all season, but mostly with his bat."

He did it with his bat, too, Saturday.  Wezniak's two-out, run scoring single in the top of the 11th inning - scoring Austin Avan - was his team-leading 24th RBI of the season.

"That was a tough loss," LCC Coach Justin Machado said. "But it was a great game and an incredible series. The balk call in the sixth inning rattled us a little, and Eshelman is a tough out.  This series will help both teams in the playoffs. We'll both be battle tested, that's for sure."

Mavericks Beat Carlsbad in Suspenseful Game 2

Playing at Carlsbad in the 2nd game of the series, La Costa jumped out in front with a run in the top of the 1st on a single by Martin followed by an RBI hit by Solomon.   Both teams threatened, but neither team could cross the plate until the 6th when Carlsbad got on the board with a run.

Neither team scored in the 7th, and the game went in to extra innings.  The Mavs scored in the 8th when Schupp led off with a single, Casas moved him to 2nd on a sac bunt and Lyon hit him in with a line drive basehit.  The Lancers answered in the bottom of the 8th with a solo homerun.  The Mavericks scored 2 runs in the 9th when Carlsbad helped the cause with an inning-opening fielding error that allowed Hinkle to reach 1st, Winters and Miller both followed with basehit singles.  Schupp then pushed 2 runs across the plate when he put the ball in play with bases loaded to score 2 runs.  The Mavs held Carlsbad in the bottom of the 9th to win 4-2.  The defensive play of the game goes to Robby Schupp for a diving, ESPN-Top-10, catch in deep right center field to end Carlsbad's rally in the 8th inning.

Andrew Hinkle pitched 7 outstanding innings.  Carter Johnson got the win with 2 strong innings of relief.

These teams will face off again on Saturday in the rubber game of the series.  The 2012 Avocado League West Championship will be at stake.

Thursday, May 10
Mavs Lose Game 1 To Carlsbad

The Mavericks got beat by Carlsbad by a score of 1-0.  This was the first game in a 3-game series that will determine who claims the Avocado West League Title.

Game 1 was a classic pitchers duel with the Mav's only managing three hits the entire game (2 by Martin, 1 by Hinkle).

Game 2 of the series will be at Carlsbad on Thursday.

Saturday, May 5
Mavericks Win Non League Game Against Bonita Vista

Playing a non-league game against Bonita Vista at home on a perfect Saturday afternoon, the Mavericks started out in the hole.  After one and half innings of play the Mav's were down 3 nothing.  In the bottom of the 2nd the Mavs started to claw their way back in to the game when they scored 1 run to get on the board.   The Mavericks then found their bats in a big 4th inning rally, batting around and scoring 7 runs.  The rally was capped by a 3-run HOMERUN by Colin Winters.   The Mavericks won the game with a final score of 10-5.

Andrew Hinkle started the game and threw six innings.  He was relieved by Carter Johnson in the 7th.

The Mavs now prepare for the final league series of the regular season.  The opponent will be Carlsbad.   La Costa leads the league with an 8-1 record, going in to the final series of the season.  The Mavs lead by one single game with three games left to play.

Tuesday, May 1
Mavericks Lose Close Game To Cathedral Catholic

The Mavericks faced off against nemesis and rival Cathedral Catholic in a game played for bragging rights.  The Mavericks jumped out ahead in the top of the 1st when Danny Martin hit a lead-off BOMB over the left field fence.  Unfortunately the Dons answered with their own lead-off HR, followed by 2 more runs in the bottom of the 1st.  In the 2nd, Cathedral added two more runs to make it 5-1.   With the Cathedral ace on the mound things weren't looking good for the Mav's until the 5th when the Mavs mounted a serious drive.  Miller led off with a solid double, followed by another by Casinelli.  Martin then unleashed his 2nd BOMB of the day - this one to dead center field.  This shot made it 5-4.  Unfortunately the Mavs couldn't find a way to post another run and Cathedral won by one run.

Jake Schulz pitched a solid six innings, but had to take the loss for the day.  Carter Johnson pitched the last inning and retired the side.

Saturday, April 28
Mavericks Sweep Series Against El Camino

The Mavs finished up the 2012 series with Game 3 at El Camino.  The game was scoreless after three innings, but the Mav's moved ahead in the 4th with two runs on a double by Balderas, a single by Solomon, and a sac fly by Winters.  In the 5th inning the Mavs piled it on by scoring 5 runs - including a 3 run homerun by Colin Winters.   The Mavs then added 3 more in the 6th with a hit by Miller, a walk by Casas and a big double by Danny Martin.  The Mavs went on to win the game by a final score of 10-2.

Drew Krassny was a cool operator on the mound for the first 4 innings.  He got the win, giving up no runs and striking out 3.  Carter Johnson finished the game.  Some sloppy fielding by the Mav's allowed the Wildcats to put two runners across the plate, but Johnson shut them down - giving up just one hit and striking out five.

Friday, April 27
Big DOUBLES Day Against El Camino

The Mavericks brought their bats in this second game of the 3-game series.  After  2 - 1/2 innings the score was tied at 0-0, with the Mavs coming up to bat.  The Mavericks plated 9 runs in the 3rd, with all of the runs coming on two outs.  The Mavs added another run in the 4th and one in the 6th to finish with a final score of 11-0.

The Mavs had 7 doubles on the day from Winters, Martin, Hinkle, Healy, and Solomon.  The Mavs defense also managed 2 key, inning-ending double plays for the day.

Andrew Hinkle pitched the first 5 innings.  He had 7 strikeouts and gave up no runs.  Hogencamp pitched the 6th and Dudeck closed in the 7th.  The suspense for the day came down to the last inning when El Camino loaded the bases with just one out, but Dudeck came through when he struck out the last two batters to maintain the shut-out.

With this win the Mavs move in to sole possesion of first place in Avocado West League Play with a league record of 6-1.

Tuesday, April 24
Mavericks Win Game 1 Against El Camino

The Mavericks faced off against El Camino in Game 1 of the 2012 Avocado West series at ECHS.    Neither team scored in the 1st, but the Mavericks jumped ahead in the 2nd with a run.  The Mavericks then found their bats in the 3rd inning when they batted around and scored 4 runs.  The Mavs added 4 more in the 4th inning when they batted around again.  Big hitters for the day included Danny Martin and Evan Schreiber with 3 hits each.  Solomon, Balderas and Miller had 2 hits each, with Miller posting 5 RBI's for the day.  The Mavericks won by a final score of 10-1.

Jake Schulz (6-1) got the win with 5 strong innings.  He gave up one run.  Kyle Sachrison pitched the last two innings and gave up no runs.

The Mavs move to 5-1 in league play, and 14-6-1 for the 2012 season.

Mavericks Take Series Against RBV

After winning the first game of the series on Tuesday, the Mavericks lost a home game against RBV on Thursday of this week.  This loss tied the series at one game each.

The two teams faced each other at RBV for the rubber game of the series in a battle of lefties.  The game was indeed a battle with the score tied at 2-2 after four innings.    Both teams went to their bullpen in the 5th and it looked like the game might be headed for extra innings as the score was still tied going in to the 6th.  In the 6th inning Anthony Balderas reached 1st on an infield hit to 3rd base.  Devon Roseberry pinch ran and scored the go ahead run on a key hit by Andrew Hinkle.  The Mavericks scored another run in the 7th on a double to LCF by Shayne Davern.  Sam Casinelli ran for Shayne and scored on a passed ball.  The Maverick defense played error-less defense on the day.  The Mavs won with a final score of 4-2.

Drew Krassny started and pitched 4 strong innings.  Carter Johnson threw 3 innings and got the W, giving up no runs on the day.

The Mavs have won both of their first two series and are now 4-1 in 2012 League Play.  Next up is El Camino.
