Jonathan Law Wrestling "No Mercy"

WELCOME TO THE HOME OF JONATHAN LAW WRESTLING "NO MERCY"

The 2008/2009 season begins the 34th season of wrestling at Jonathan Law High School. The program was started in 1974 by Joe Beler Sr. and went 1-9-1 in their initial campaign. There have been seven head coaches since Beler began the program in 1974. Jon Nelson took the helm from 1976-1980, former Milford High State Champion and current head of the Milford Indians youth wrestling program Bill Coehlo from 1981-1982, Ray Vanyo 1983-1984, Tom Worrell 1985-1986, Roy Lenz who has the most wins of any Head Wrestling coach with 220 wins and the longest tenure coaching from 1987-2001 (15 years), Scott Miller 2002-2005, and finally current Head Coach and class of 1991 graduate Matt Schoonmaker who was a two time Class M finalist and was All-State in Football 1990 and Wrestling 1991 at Jonathan Law. Schoonmaker also wrestled for three years at Division II Southern Connecticut State University for Don Knauf and was a two time national qualifier and has the longest association with the program of any coach. 1988-1991 member of team, as a volunteer coach from 1992-1995, assistant from 1996-2005, 2005-current Head Coach (19 years overall). Schoonmaker will be assisted by Jose Salgado, class of 92' former captain and state divisional placewinner as well as Jim Bottigliero class of 91' also a former captain and a two time All-State wrestler.  Other volunteer assistants will also include Nick Newell 04' who wrestled and captained his team at Western New England College, Jeff Root 06' Junior wrestling at WPI, Jake Nihart 06' Junior wrestling at Norwich University and Bryant Jiravisicul 07' Sophmore wrestling at Wesleyan.  The school has produced 29 State Champions and All-State wrestlers. Jonathan Law has had three State-Open Champions. Daryl Arroyo in 1980, who went on to earn All-American status while wrestling at Springfield College where he now serves as the schools Head Coach. In 1984 Keith Arroyo was a 119lb State Open Champion. The third Open Champion was Chris Kenworthy in 1994 at 112lbs. The program has won 411 matches since its inception and has had 9 20+ win campaigns as well as a State record 33 wins in 2007. The 1991 team 22-3 was the first team to ever be ranked in the top ten and defeat a ranked opponent. As of 2006 the school record of 25-2-1 set in 1993 was eclipsed.   The 1993 team now has the highest winning percenrage in a season as the 2007 team eclipsed their win total going 33 - 6.  In 2007/2008 Jonathan law finished ranked in the Top 10 for the first time in school history with a # 10 ranking. At the end of the 80's the Milford Register voted Jonathan Law Wrestling the team of the decade in the city of Milford. The team won three league championships while in the C.C.I.A.C 1991,92,93. Law left the C.C.I.A.C. in 1995 and joined the S.W.C and as of 2004/2005 joined the S.C.C..
