Laurier Captures National Gold
The WLU Faspitch squad captured Gold this past weekend at the 2nd Annual Canadian Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Championships. Laurier hosted 8 other teams from across Canada, in a 9 team National Championship.
Laurier opened the weekend with a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to rival U of Western Ontario. The team rebounded to defeat St. Clair College 7-4 and the U of Calgary 9-1. The round robin record put Laurier into the playoff round with two lives. The first playoff game ended with a 4-3 victory over Durham College.
Monday morning saw a rematch with still unbeaten Western. The Laurier team saved their biggest hits of the weekend for the playoffs on Monday. Some late inning big hits sparked a 7-0 6 innning run ruling of Western...handing them their first loss of the season.
Laurier awaited the winner of Western & U of Saskatchewan game to vie for the gold medal. U of Sask defeated Western 3-2 setting up a rematch of last year's Championship game between Laurier & U of Sask. Saskatchewan built a 3-0 lead over the first 3 innings, holding Laurier to 2 hits over that time. In the 4th Laurier broke the game with a 3 run homer and a 2 run double. Saskatchewan never recovered and Laurier went on to a 7-3 victory.
OIWFA Championships
The Laurier Fastpitch squad went into the OIWFA Championship tournament in London off a 14-3 regular season record, and 2 weeks removed from a National Championship gold medal on Thanksgiving weekend. This was not to be their weekend however...the team struggled offensively through the Round Robin games Saturday....generating only 5 runs of offense in the 3 games. A 3-2 extra inning victory over Brock in extra innings was enough to advance them to Sunday as the 3rd seed. The team lost to eventual champions McMaster and 3-1 to Ottawa (also in extra innings) to finish up the round robin.
Looking to change their Sat performance...the Laurier squad faced off vs Guelph. Once again unable to string hits together and some uncharacteristic errors led to a much earlier than anticipated exit from the tournament. Guelph went on to capture the Bronze.
Despite falling short of their weekend goals the team can be extremely proud of their achievements not only this season, but the past 3 years.

Week 1 Summary
The Laurier Fastpitch squad kicked off the 2009 Seasion in exciting fashion. As hosts for the 2009 Canadian Collegiate Championships, a number of games need to be made up that would be played that weekend. As a result, the 2009 season kicked off with 6 games opening weekend starting with Windsor Friday night.
The team trailed Windsor in the opener 2-0 on 2 unearned Windsor runs...but came back with a flurry in the 4th and 5th to run-rule Windsor 9-2.
Game two was a much tighter affair with the Laurier squad trailing 8-3 heading to the 7th inning. An offensive outburst saw the game tied at 8 after 7 innings. In the 8th Laurier pushed 3 runs across...to seal up the 11-9 victory.
On Saturday the team headed to UofT...and game 1 saw the squad mercy UofT 8-1. Game two was once again much closer....with Laurier trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom of the 7th. A clutch 2 out single drove in 2 runs for a 2-1 victory.
On Sunday the fastpitch team completed the perfect weekend with two victories over U of Guelph. 6-0 in the opener and 4-2 in the second game. The two games versus Guelph were by far the best showings of the weekend as the defence is rounding into form.
Laurier hits the road for Week 2 with four games in the Nations Capital....Ottawa on Saturday and Carleton on Sunday.
