Diary of Nationals Weekend

Here is our update from day 1.....

The weather here was very cold for our first day....sunny...but very cold. We started the day at -7 but by our first game it was up to -3. It took some time to get accustomed to playing in that cold weather, especially the pitchers, and combined with nerves we were trailing U of Calgary 8-3 after the 3rd inning. The team hung in and our bats really came alive...and we ended up winning 12-8.

By Game #2 it was up +4...and we played a very tough UBC team .  It was a back and forth affair and both teams made some amazing plays to get out of jams.....we scored in the bottom of the 7th to win 4-3.

We have U of Regina and SAIT today....and it's supposed to get to +10 today.

Here are the updates from day 2....

The weather warmed up to +11 today...and considering the -8 on Saturday...it was downright balmy! ;)

We had a very good game with U of Regina and the game was tied 1-1 until the 6th....and our bats came alive with an out of the park homerun igniting the offence...for a 6-1 victory. We mercied SAIT in our second game.....

We finished 2nd overall in pool play. U of Saskatchewan was also 4 wins and 0 losses, but they had a better +/- than us. We play UBC again tomorrow morning. It's supposed to be +17 here....which will be nice.

Here is the update from our playoff round (day 3)

We played UBC again this morning....who we beat 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th on Saturday. We played one of our most intense games of the season...and were able to push 1 run an inning across....and won 8-3.

That put us in the Championship game vs Saskatchewan. A combination of the travel, weather and games caught up with us....and we completely ran out of gas. Saskatchewan was also a extremely strong team with a number of  players  from the Outlaws team which won the Junior Nationals this past summer in PEI.

Laurier can be very proud of their Silver achievement....UBC took the Bronze.

Championship Weekend

The Laurier squad returned home from Calgary on Tuesday night, only to turn around and host the OIWFA Championships at Budd Park starting on Friday night.   The team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to U of Ottawa...Saturday the team defeated U of Windsor and Queen's in convincing fashion.

Sunday morning saw the team pitted against Guelph in the quarter finals....and the squad reeled off a 6-2 victory.   The Semi's saw the #1 and #2 seeds squared off for the right to advance to the Championship.   In 2006 Western won the OIWFA Championships...and in 2007 Laurier defeated Western in an extra inning Championship game.   The teams split their double header league game this year.  This rivalry has provided some very exciting and thrilling games over the past two seasons.  Western defeated Laurier 4-1 in the Semi's.....

In the Bronze medal game...Laurier defeated McMaster.  Western defeated Ottawa in the finals.

The 2009 OIWFA Championships will be held in London.

Opening Weekend

The Laurier Fastpitch team kicked off the 2008 Campaign with a pair of Victories over Brock University.  It was an overall  team effort, as the  team recorded shutouts in both games....

The team again hits the road this weekend with trips to York & Queen's.

 Week 2

The Laurier Fastpitch team hit the road in week 2 with games vs York & Queen's.   The team played well in different phases of the game...running off 4 victories.   Laurier defeated York 9-1 in the first game.  (which ended after 5 innings).   The rain moved in for the 2nd game...and the soggy affair ended again after 5 innings, won by the Laurier squad 10-1. Cassie Taylor-Baptiste picked up both pitching wins...allowing 1 earned run.

Sunday, the team played morning games vs an improved Queen's team...on surprisingly good field conditions.   Game 1 was a 6-5 win...Katie Westoby picked up the pitching win.   Game 2 was a 9-0 victory as the Laurier squad run-ruled Queen's.  Cassie Taylor-Baptiste tossed the shutout.   Kelly Craig had 8 hits over the weekend, and Haylea Leaman scored 7 times.

The team has an overloaded schedule in week 3, with 6 games on tap....starting with a double-header Friday night at Waterloo Park vs Waterloo. (6 & 8 pm)   Saturday the team travels down the 401 to Windsor...and Sunday, the team is at Western.

Week 3

Saturday the team travelled 3 hours down the 401 for a double header with the University of Windsor.  The defence and pitching was once again stellar.  Laurier posted 6 runs in the first game...holding Windsor scoreless for a 6-0 victory.   Katie Westoby picked up the win.   The second game was a much closer affair...as Amy Oliver drove in pinch Hitter Melissa Pertschy for the games only run in the bottom of the 7th.   Cassie Taylor-Baptise & the Laurier defence held Windsor to 3 hits and the 1-0 Victory.

Sunday the team again travelled down the 401 to London to face the Western Mustangs!   The team started the first game very slowly, making uncharacteristic errors, coupled with some good Western hits....and allowing 3 runs right off the top.  The team didn't recover eventually lose 5-0....It was the first loss of the season for the fastpitch squad.

Game 2 the Laurier squad rebounded nicely.  The team got back on track offensively.  Amy Oliver had 3 hits....and Cassie Taylor Baptiste had two hits and scored 2 runs....to go along with a fine pitching performance, holding the powerful Western squad to 2 hits....and picking up the 6-0 victory.

The team continues it's road travels by heading to Mac on Thursday....and will then be home for the remainder of the season.  Home games start Saturday at Waterloo Park Diamond #1, 2pm & 4pm vs University of Guelph. Sunday the team faces U of T at Waterloo Park at 11 & 1 pm.

Week 4

The Laurier squad kicked off week 4 with two victories over McMaster Thursday evening.   Game #1 was a 5-3 victory...a Laurier win led by a double & Triple by Robyn Haig, a Triple by Kelly Craig and a triple by Cassie Taylor Baptiste.   Katie Westoby Picked up the W.   Game #2 again saw the strong bats continue with  home runs by Jody Waltho and Kelly Craig.   Cassie Taylor-Baptiste went the distance, picking up the shutout in a 4-0 win.

Saturday saw two more victories by the Laurier squad...both close games.  The first game was a 2-0 victory over University of Guelph....the second game was a close knit 1-0 victory.   Robyn Haig had all 3 RBI's....

Sunday the squad started very slowly...giving up 4 runs in the big U of T inning, and the team couldn't recover suffering only their second loss of the season 4-2.   Game #2 was a rebound game in which the Laurier team pounded out a number of hits in a 9-3 victory.

Week 5

Laurier completed their 22 game regular season schedule on the weekend with 3 victories and one heartbreaking loss.   The team finished the season with an 18-3 overall record.   Saturday the team hosted Carleton and picked up 2 victories both by the same score of 8-1.

Sunday the team faced the Gee-Gee's from Ottawa.  A back & forth affair in the first game saw numerous lead changes...and trailing 4-2,  a 3-run homerun by Robyn Haig ignited the offence and the team went on to an 11-5 victory.

In game 2 the Laurier led 4-0 (and threatened in the 5th), but heading into Ottawa's home half of the 6th....Ottawa scored 5 times to take a 5-4.    Laurier put runners on 2nd & 3rd with one out, but Ottawa held tough for the victory.

2007 Season

Championship Weekend

The Wilfrid Laurier Women's Fastpitch team are the 2007 OIWFA Champions. The team defeated the defending champions, the university of Western Ontario in a thrilling 4-2 extra inning championship game. The team finished second in their division after the round robin pool play. On Sunday, the team showed their true colors en route to 3 straight victories.

The team defeated McMaster 7-0 Sunday morning, the game was close until the 4th when the Hawks scored 5 times. They then faced the Gee-Gee's from Ottawa. An exciting game saw 4 lead changes, and the Hawks trailed Ottawa 6-4 heading into the bottom of the 7th...the team came through pushing across the winning run for a 7-6 victory. The Championship game was another nailbiter....trailing Western 1-0, the team went ahead 2-1 in the 6th on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze. Western was able to tie the game 2-2 in their half of the 7th. The 8th inning saw the game go the international tie-breaker...but Laurier was unable to score in their top of the 8th. Western loaded the bases in their half of the 8th before Laurier could register an out. The Hawks didn't break and were able to turn a double play....to get out of the inning unscathed.

Laurier was able to push across two runs in the 9th to seal the 4-2 Victory. The weekend showed the meaning of a team effort as every single player contributed. Katie Kropf was the Championship tournament MVP.
