If the recently completed pre-season is a valid indicator of what to expect in the fall, plan on 2010 being a unique one for Matadores harriers. Since spring training began, a majority of the team simply has relished leaving the confined spaces of the track and running on the open trails. Realistically, although this type of training reminds athletes of the glory days of fall, there are issues the varsity level athletes will need to deal with during the long summer. The most significant of those issues has to do with the departure of last season's seniors. Never before has the Matadores team been so young. On the one hand, the #3 through #7 boys are are separated by less than a minute over a 3-mile course. On the other hand, all five members of this chase pack are rookies. In fact of the 70 athletes on the current boy's and girl's roster, over 55 are newcomers to the team or were non-varsity rookies last fall. BOYS: Depth. That's what the 2010 season brings for the Matadores. Many factors boost their hopes for 2010: strong recruits from track, and the knowledge that the chase pack, training stronger than ever, is closing the gap on the front pack. With 8 Matadores breaking the 5:00 standard in track (7 under 4:50), and a newfound dedication to success up and down the roster, the boys are eager to show the rest of the cross-country world they are serious about climbing to the top. At their annual pre-season time trial, the boys, led by last season's Suburban League Champion Regan Garcia (15:30 PR) and Moises Cuahutles (PR of 4:33 in the 1600 and 16:25 for 3-miles), let it all out as they established a preseason team-time record that, when extrapolated to a 3-mile course, puts them under 82:00 going into the summer. Despite an off day from senior, Raul Reyes (16:31 PR), there was a negligible 16 second gap between the #3 and #7 runners! With four rookies and newcomers close behind the top 7, the boys have the fastest team and the closest pack they've ever had. Besides Regan Moises, and Raul the projected 2010 lineup includes 4-year harrier Frankie Nogales (16:32 PR), Jake Casalou (16:37 PR), Clint Bales (17:42 PR), Eric Wong (17:49 PR) and Mauricio Pavano (4:48 PR in the 1600). Newcomer, Jake Ostgaard, together with Pavano and Jai Labasan (4:46 PR in the 1600) respectively were the #4, #5 and #6 finishers at the recent time trial. In addition Louie Lozano is making a strong case for himself with his recent performance. Regan, Moises, Raul, & Mauricio

GIRLS: In 2009, the Lady Mats were ranked amongst the "Top 10" in CIF-SS Division II, advanced to CIF-SS Finals for the second consecutive year, placed 5 girls in the top 10 at League Finals, earned to an unprecedented 9th consecutive league title, and sent rookie Taylor Jones to Fresno to compete in the State meet. While this year's team is determined to make onlookers forget the success of last year's team, there's still a lot of work to be done. Even though their primary goal is to attain a spot on the starting line at Clovis in November, the girls know they have their work cut out for them in a competitive Suburban League. Fortunately, the top 2 Lady Mats are closely packed and already in the sub-18 minute range with a 3rd and 4th teammate close behind. Their biggest challenge will be to find three athletes to round out the top varsity spots and close the gap between #4 and #5 that at this point in the season is close to a minute. Led by Taylor Jones (17:17 PR, 5:14 & 11:24 PRs in the 1600 & 3200), Celinda Manzo (18:00 PR & 11:46 PR in the 3200), and Ashley Casanover (18:35 PR & 11:58 PR in the 3200), with Charlen Gantan (20:15 PR) and Nicole Hammonds (19:12 PR) less than half a minute behind, the girls surprised themselves by closing in on last seasons pre-season team-time record that puts them just above 1:35.00 going into the summer. Two factors that most surprised the team and makes their effort that much more impressive were the 12 sec gap between the #5 and #8 runners and the fact that three of last season's varsity members (Emily De Boer (18:35 PR), Aja Labasan (19:31 PR), and Ambar Hickman (20:05 PR)) were unable to participate in the time trial. Rounding out this season's squad, and contending for a top spot is Junior Czarina De Jesus. Taylor, Celinda, Emily, Ashley & Nicole
