President’s Message – May, 2009

It seems like just yesterday we were having our Opening Day at Feist, and here we are only 3 weeks away from the end of the season. I’ve tried to get around to as many games as possible this season and I have seen some great baseball.

Even though the season is winding down, there is going to be a lot of activity around Lakeside this summer:

  • At the end of our AAA season, the top four teams will play in a Lakeside Champions Tournament to determine the division winner for the season.
  • At the end of our Majors season, the top two teams will move on to play in the District 54 Tournament of Champions against the top teams from the other leagues in our district.
  • Immediately following TOC’s, the District 54 All Star tournament will begin. All Stars will be announced on June 15 and play will begin on June 28. This year we will be entering a 9/10’s team, a 11’s team, a Majors team, and a Juniors team. Each team in each age group will be randomly drawn into a 4 team pool. The top two teams from each pool will advance to a single elimination round of games. The final winner will move on to represent District 54 in the sectional All Star tournament.
  • Our softball program will be entering three teams into All Stars – a 9/10’s team, an 11’s team, and a 12’s team. We are the only league in our district with a softball program, so our girls will skip straight ahead to the sectional All Star tournament. Dates are currently TBD.
  • For the first time in a few years, Lakeside will be hosting one of the All Star tournaments at Feist Park. We were selected to host the 11 year old All Star tournament. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our spectacular facilities and generate revenue for the league. To those ends, we will need many volunteers to help prepare the fields, announce and score games, direct traffic, and run the snack shack. Jon Tattersall is coordinating the tournament efforts and will be contacting many of you in the very near future as he sets up his schedule and program. Please consider volunteering some of your time to help run this tournament.
  • And of course, Fall Ball starts in September. Many of our kids play other sports in the fall, but this is an excellent opportunity to keep your baseball skills sharp and have a good time. Fall Ball is set up to be more instructional and low key and is a great learning environment, especially for those kids that will be transitioning into a higher division next year. Fall Ball runs from September 11th to November 14th.

We’ve had some great off-field successes this year as well:

  • Our 3rd annual Crab Feed was a huge success. We sold out the venue at 420 people and no one went home hungry (or thirsty for that matter). Many thanks to the volunteers that helped set up, run, and clean up the Crab Feed this year, especially Bill Rockefeller, Tracy Cusack, Julie Whitesides, and Nicolle Brown. I’d also like to thank our sponsors and vendors, many of whom donated their services to the league. They include Tony’s Fine Foods and NorCal Beverages.
  • Our batting cage is coming together with the addition of mats, screens, and safety padding. It will be painted in the next few weeks and over the summer we expect to get the roof put on. We’re also looking at other long term improvements (as funds allow), including much needed grandstands at Granite Bay Community Park and a more permanent home for our expanding softball program.
  • Over 350 tickets were sold for the annual Lakeside at the A’s game in Oakland. The group had a blast watching the A’s play the Rays on a beautiful spring day.

Just as our kids age out of the Little League program as they get into Junior High School and High School, our Board members also move on. We have several openings for next season and I would like to get those filled as soon as possible. It’s always easier to recruit people while the season is still in full swing, as opposed to at the end of summer when baseball is a distant memory for most. Even though next year’s Board does not take effect until October, prospective members should contact me now. We’d love to have you attend our June 2 Board meeting and get a feel for how this all works. We currently have positions open for Webmaster, Secretary, Snack Shack Coordinator, and Player/Coach Development Coordinator. These are all voting positions and critical to the operations of the league. Thank you all for your continued support.
