Thursday, January 4

15 years ago, I started the Lake City Youth soccer program with 60 kids in 3rd through 6th grade and for the past 15 years, I have spent countless hours developing the program into what it is today. The program now averages over 350 participants per year ranging from 4 year olds through 6th graders. It provides an opportunity for kids of all levels to learn and play soccer in an environment that stresses the importance of sportsmanship and fair play. It is a program that I am proud to have been a part of and one that greatly benefits the youth of Lake City. After lots of thought, I have decided to “hang up my cleats” and this spring 2018 season will be my last season running the program.

What this means is that others will need to step forward in order for the program to continue to flourish. It is my recommendation that this is not done by one person but instead by a steering committee of parent volunteers with possible input from the head coaches of the high school boys and girls teams. I would like to put together this steering committee as early as possible so that they can be “trained” on the many aspects of what is done before, during, and after the spring soccer season. I will do everything in my power to help ensure a smooth transition but it will be up to the steering committee to be prepared to take full responsibility of the youth soccer program for the spring 2019 season.

If you are interested in being a part of the steering committee and seeing the future success of the youth soccer program or if you have any questions regarding this, contact me as soon as possible. I will be scheduling a meeting sometime in February to discuss the upcoming season and the transition process.

Thank you,

Mark Spence
