The Lafayette Lady General Fastpitch Softball team is entering its 16th season with a combined winning percentage of 70.0% as the result of an overall record of 377-161. Lafayette has seen three coaches in the past who have established the foundation for this premier program which ranks 9th in the top 10 for most wins all-time in the state of Kentucky.
Mark Montgomery transitioned the team from slowpitch to fastpitch and as a result of his efforts, Lafayette became one the premier fast-pitch softball programs in Kentucky with a winning percentage of 72.7% during his tenure. For 6 seasons, Mark compiled a record of 136-51 making him the winningest Head Coach in Lafayette Softball history and having the distinction of winning the very first fast-pitch softball game in Lexington's history by beating Dunbar 15-14. After his 5th season in 1999, Mark became the Head Coach at Georgetown College and continued his winning ways for the NAIA program. Currently, Mark is continuing his coaching career at Centenary College in Louisana, the smallest Division 1 school in America. Mark has led tiny Centenary College into the NCAA post season tournament in 2 of the last 3 years with a combined record of 102-74; along the way he has beaten such teams as Florida, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Auburn, and Arkansas to name a few. Mark passed the Lafayette tradition to Allison Denton before the 2000 season.
Allison was a standout softball and basketball star for cross-town rival Paul Lawrence Dunbar during her days of roaming the high school hallways. After high school, Allison transitioned to a basketball court in college. While leading the Lafayette softball program for 2 years, Allison compiled a record of 56-16 which resulted into an impressive .778 winning percentage, the highest winning percentage in Lafayette Softball History among coaches. After two years, Allison accepted an offer to become the Girls Basketball Head Coach for Lafayette where she lead the Lady Generals basketball team to their first regional tournament birth in 8 years during the 2003 season. As a result of Allison's acceptance into the basketball program, the softball reigns were passed to Vic Travis in 2002.
After becoming Head Softball Coach in 2002, Vic Travis would carry the Lafayette program for the next 5 years leading up to the 2006/2007 season. Over that span, Vic would compile a record of 118 wins versus only 60 losses in a total of 178 attempts. (66.3% winning percentage) In 2002, Vic inhierited a young team having lost 8 of 9 starters from the 2001 squad; however, he was able to mold the young girls after a 15-21 start into seasoned veterans over the next couple of years and Lafayette's Regional Champion title along with a State Tournament berth in 2004. Before the 2006/2007 season, Vic decided to hang up his hat and leave the tradition to Dana Taylor, our current Head Softball Coach and Lafayette Alumna who will keep the storied tradition alive and well for years to come. In Dana's first year as Head Coach of the Lady Generals, the team finished 21-12 with a District Runner-Up title and a berth into the Region 11 tournament where they would fall to Region 11 Champion Scott County in a tough fought battle. Dana's overall record for three seasons is 67-34 for a 66.3% winning percentage. Under Dana's tenure, the Lady Generals have added another District Title and a #13 ranking in the state for the 2009 season before dropping to eventual Region 11 Champion Franklin Co in the Region Tournament at UK.
