Greenwood finishes third at Kentucky Fastpitch Classic
The Lady Gators won two and lost one this weekend in the Kentucky Fastpitch Classic. GHS defeated #12 Reidland 1-0 in 8innings, as GHS picked up its 29th win. Kathy Church won her 26th and recorded her 15th shutout. Amanda Montgomery was 2for3, and Kathy Church bunted home by Lindsay Klineline for Greenwood's lone run. In the Second game against #7 Christian Co, the Lady Gators made 6errors that cost them a 6-1 set back. Church and GHS suffered only its 3rd lose of the season. The Third game and the game for third place in the tournament matched #3GHS vs #2 Daviess Co. Greenwood got the best of this one with a 1-0 win, scoring a run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Melanie Pendelton singled to left, Tiffany Evans sacrificed her to second and Andrea Slaughter grounded out to the shortstop to score Melanie. Kathy Church improved to 27-3 and is one win shy of matching a school record for wins with 28. Greenwood finished the regular season with a 30-3 record, best in school history. Greenwood is also 2wins shy of tieing a school record for wins at 32.

State champion hopeful Greenwood took its first step to that goal with a 3-0 victory over Bowling Green in the tournament’s first game.

When the teams met up two weeks ago, the Lady Gators needed a seventh-inning run for a one-run win. No late heroics were needed Wednesday.

“I’m happier tonight,” Greenwood coach Penny Reece said. “A lot of teams that you’d think would be in the state tournament are already done. There’s always upsets and that’s the big thing you have to watch out for.”

Bowling Green’s Ashley Herndon was the lone Lady Purple to hit successfully off Greenwood pitcher Kathy Church. Herndon’s pair of singles were the only hits Bowling Green (10-15) would find.

“We couldn’t string anything together,” Bowling Green coach Lisa Correa said. “We had a few good hits here or there but couldn’t get anything together.”

Church struck out 11 and walked four in the effort.

It was a bottom of the order offensive attack that propelled Greenwood to the district championship. The Lady Gators’ six-through-nine hitters had five of the team’s eight hits.

Greenwood began its scoring in the third inning when Lindsey Klineline hit a chopper to the mound with teammate Andrea Slaughter on third. Herndon threw to first base when Slaughter dashed to home on the throw to first and snuck past a tag attempt.

The Lady Gators added solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings on two-out, run-scoring singles by Tiffany Evans and Church.

“When the top isn’t getting it done, the bottom does,” Reece said.

“A lot of people can ease up when they get to the bottom of the lineup. You can’t do that against us.”

Greenwood Advances to State
Greenwood has been ranked in the top ten all year, and won 34games going into the finals of the region against Allen Co. Win Number 35 was the best of the year, in a come from behind 10inning game. Allen Co jumped out 2-0, but before the nerves were settled the score was tied 3-3 after the third. Thats when Kathy Church went to work, pitching the remaing portion of the game perfect. Allen Co. didnt get a hit nor baserunner of any sorts from the 4th to 10th innings. Mean while Greenwood had some opportunities get away until the 10th, when Amanda Montgomery singled and scored on Shannon Murl's shot to left field. Greenwood will face the Region 12 winner and play at 10:00 next Friday. Good luck Gators

GHS tags 6-1 loss on Allen Co
By Rob Herbst, rherbst@bgdailynews.com -- 270-783-3238

It was a softball matchup between the Fourth Region’s top two ranked teams, but the final result might deserve a slight asterisk.
No. 2 Greenwood easily handled visiting No. 13 Allen County-Scottsville 6-1 on Thursday night, but the Lady Gators’ offense didn’t come against the Lady Patriots’ All-State pitcher Hannah Roberts, who was nursing a back injury.

“Obviously it makes a difference without (Hannah) on the mound,” Greenwood coach Penny Reece said. “I would have liked to have seen her pitch. It would have been good to see somebody throw that (high) velocity and all.

“And plus, it would get us prepared for her later on. I’d like to see what she had, although I think I know.”

Greenwood did have its All-State pitcher, Kathy Church, and she proved her worth.

Church had a perfect game going until Kristy Gaston’s one-out, fifth-inning single. That was one of only two hits against Church. Only two others reached base — both because of errors that led to an unearned run in the top of the seventh.

“We just didn’t hit the ball very well. She’s a good pitcher and we didn’t come to hit,” Allen County-Scottsville coach Rick Roberts said. “We hit a couple of shots that were good shots, but they were to somebody. We didn’t hit her well enough to score many runs.”

With two outs, Greenwood scored four times in the second on AC-S freshman hurler Katie Gaw.

Run-scoring singles by Andrea Slaughter and Elizabeth Ferrell scored Jessica Mustread and Church. Then a booming double by Andrea Fitzpatrick that went off the fence 200 feet from home plate scored Slaughter and Mustread.

The right-handed Gaw pitched only two innings as Rick Roberts elected to go with three pitchers.

“Katie is going to be very good later on, but she’s only a freshman. I think she might have been a little tight and we didn’t help her very much either,” Rick Roberts said. “When Hannah isn’t around, we’ve tried to go right hand, left hand, right hand. It’s kind of a baseball thing, but I think it works in fastpitch (softball) too. If you don’t have overpowering pitching, you’ve got to platoon pitch and try to keep an edge someday.”

Two-out troubles hurt Allen County-Scottsville again in the fifth and sixth innings as Greenwood scored a run in each with two outs. Andrea Fitzpatrick led off the fifth with a single and scored on a two-out fielding error by AC-S shortstop Heather Monroe.

A one-out single by Slaughter in the sixth inning eventually resulted in a run as she scored on a two-out wild pitch.

That was plenty enough support for Church and Greenwood, who will still savor the victory over their rivals.

“I don’t think you can help not to (get more excited about this game). We’re 1-2 in the region as usual,” Reece said. “As coaches, you want to downplay it, but at the same time, you want it bad. There’s a lot of rivalry there.”

Allen County-Scottsville (6-4) is at Franklin-Simpson on Monday. Greenwood has a chance to become No. 1 in the state as it goes to the Kentucky Prep-5 Star Showcase Tourney hosted by current No. 1 North Laurel on Saturday.
