INDIANA - She didn't score a point and probably only played about five minutes, but Erin Brennan's vital contribution when the game against Northern Cambria was still in doubt had Bishop Guilfoyle High School girls basketball coach Mark Moschella singing her praises.
'I think about the job that Erin Brennan did with two cracked ribs,' Moschella said. 'She came into the game at about the five-minute mark of the second quarter - sometimes these things go unnoticed - but, Rachel Rea was in foul trouble, and Erin just did a heck of a job with her post defense and got us a couple of good rebounds to give us time to go with our regular five in the third quarter.'
While Alli Williams came through with her typical 19 points and her standard quality all-around play, Bishop Guilfoyle's 47-25 District 6 Class A championship game victory Saturday at IUP's Memorial Field House came thanks in large part to the Lady Marauders' lesser-known names.
'Really, that's what happened pretty much the whole year. Rachel [Rea] would come through with her 15 or 17, and Alli with her 19 or 21,' Moschella said, 'but it always seemed like we'd get those big baskets from Kaleigh or Tiffany or Shannon, and that's what happened with [today's] game.'
Kaleigh Floyd and Tiffany Seasoltz both exceeded their scoring averages in the championship game, and their points came at instrumental times. Floyd scored five of her 11 points to spur an 8-0 BG run that turned a one-point deficit into a lead the Lady Marauders never relinquished.
She and Seasoltz then combined for 11 points in a third quarter Guilfoyle carried, 17-4, to put the game away.
'I just felt like I needed to step up,' Floyd said. I knew we had to hit our shots and play good defense.'
That's where Shannon Hite came in. She drew the task of guarding tall, athletic Northern Cambria guard Breanna Kochinsky. After getting burned a couple of times early, she settled in, funneling Kochinsky to help defenders and eventually containing her.
'Defense and rebounding meant a lot, and finishing our layups in our motion offense in the third quarter. Every shot seemed to be a layup, and Shannon's defense up top just trickled down to everyone,' Lady Marauder senior Rachel Rea said.
Seasoltz finished with eight points and three steals. She came in already knowing what it felt like to be a key contributor to a district title run as the BG softball team's shortstop last spring, but Seasoltz, a first-year basketball starter, said this was different.
'It's a lot better getting a lot more playing time,' Seasoltz said. 'Shannon, Kaleigh and I all stepped on this year as new players, pretty much, and we work well together.'
'They were part of it [last year]. I hope everyone on our basketball team knows that whether you are a sophomore that never gets in, learn from this, because maybe in a couple of years, when it's your turn, good things will happen for you,' Moschella said.
They are with increasing frequency for Guilfoyle's role players, which has become a big help for Rea and Williams.
'We are starting to expect it more out of them. They are definitely stepping up,' Rea said. 'We're just taking smart shots. Of course, when they hit the 3, it definitely helps.'
