BG girls, three area boys teams earn No. 1 D6 basketball seeds

From Mirror reports

The Bishop Guilfoyle High School girls and three area high school boys teams garnered No. 1 seeds for the upcoming District 6 basketball playoffs. The district released the pairings and brackets Monday morning for classes AAA through A.

Sites and times for the games will be released Tuesday, and the information for the Class AAAA tournaments will come out after those teams have complete their seasons.

The BG girls, defending champions and undefeated heading into Monday's game with Altoona, are the top-ranked team in a Class A field top heavy with area squads - defending PIAA Class AA finalist Northern Cambria is seeded second and Williamsburg is fourth. The Lady Marauders will get a first-round bye before meeting the Penns Manor/Homer-Center winner in the quarterfinals.

Central (AAA), Cambria Heights (AA) and Bishop Carroll (A) are the boys top seeds. The Scarlet Dragons edged Tyrone and Johnstown for the No. 1 spot and drew the winner of the Somerset/Indian Valley game in the semifinals.

Carroll, meanwhile, is looking at a potential meeting with diocesan rival Bishop Guilfoyle in the quarterfinals; the Marauders recently defeated the Huskies in a close game in Ebensburg. Heights will get into action in the quarterfinals against either Mount Union or West Branch.

Bellefonte and Southern Huntingdon were the other two girls first seeds in AAA and AA, respectively. A total of 18 teams from the Mirror coverage area entered the tournament.

The tournament is scheduled to tip off next Monday with first-round games in Class AA and Class A. Typically, the first week is reserved for first round and quarterfinal action, along with Class AAAA and perhaps Class AAA semifinal games. Most semifinals, the consolations and championships will be played the following week.

District 6 has also announced that the Class AAAA playoffs only will be comprised of three teams each, because Central Mountain has decided to enter neither of its teams.
