BG’s Forr joins elite group - surpasses 1000 points!
By Bob Larson, For the Altoona Mirror
It was a special night for Mary Forr and the Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders.
Forr needed just one basket to reach the magical 1,000 point mark for her career.
Just 33 seconds into the first quarter, Forr took a pass from Dani Williams and drove to the basket for a layup to become BG’s newest member of the 1,000 point club.
The game was stopped briefly and Forr was given a standing ovation.
Forr was just getting started, she finished with a game-high 22 points and BG got a rare sweep of the season series with Lewistown, 65-50, in a Mountain Athletic Conference Section II game, Thursday night at the Pleasant Valley gym.
“Mary is just one of the most positive kids we have had in our program,” Bishop Guilfoyle coach Mark Moschella said. “She is such a team player so to score 1,000 points while being that unselfish is remarkable. Her work ethic and the way she treats her teammates is second to none.”
Forr, true to her coach’s word, deferred the credit to her teammates.
“It (scoring 1,000 points) says a lot for our team,” Forr said. “Everyone contributes to my scoring. “They do a good job of getting me the ball. Not just one person makes a basket happen.”
Lewistown got five first half 3-pointers from sophomore guard Hannah Geedey and the Lady Panthers hung tough.
BG led 19-15, after one and 37-32 at the half.
Geedey injured her right ankle midway through the second quarter and had to come out of the game.
“I looked over at coach (Billy)Adams with about 4:00 left in the second quarter and asked him if Lewistown had missed yet,” Moschella quipped. “They do a nice job of running their offense.”
Geedey started the third quarter, but wasn’t able to make a go of it and had to come back out.
“She was having a great game,” Lewistown coach Kevin Kodish said. “She turned her ankle pretty bad. It was an unfortunate break for us.”
Courtney Carroll started the second half with a 3-pointer and BG extended its lead to 40-32, but Lewistown managed to pull to within one, 44-43.
A 3-pointer by Alli Williams at the third quarter buzzer extended the BG lead to seven, 50-43.
“That was a dagger,” Kodish said. It was a four point game and then she hit that big shot from the left wing.”
Williams came off the bench to score 17 points, 13 in the second half.
“Alli did a great job for us off the bench,” Moschella said. “She scored out on the perimeter and in the post.
Forr and Williams combined for 39 points and were too much for the Lady Panthers to handle.
“We’re small,” Kodish said. “We lost our center Morgan Bobb earlier in the season to a torn ACL.”
BG went in a spread offense in the fourth quarter and were able to extend its lead.
“Our guards did a nice job out on the perimeter,” Moschella said. “So they had to respect our guards too. Our offense is pretty balanced.”
BG remained unbeaten in the MAC at 12-0, while Lewistown slipped to 7-5.
“BG is my pick to win states,” Kodish said. “BG fans have a lot to look forward to this winter.”
