3RD REGION TOURNAMENT
E-Gals, Catholic advance
5/31/2008
Apollo, No. 1 Lady Aces meet for title today By Mark Mathis
Messenger-Inquirer
No. 1 Owensboro Catholic is in a familiar place. The Lady Aces will be playing in their 12th straight 3rd Region Softball Tournament championship game today after dropping Meade County 3-0 on Friday night.
They will be going for their eighth straight regional title.
This is completely new ground for Apollo High School. The E-Gals stopped Grayson County 3-1 to earn their first berth in a regional championship game in the fast-pitch era.
The teams are scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. today at Parent's Park to decide who advances to next week's Fast-Pitch State Softball Tournament at Jack C. Fisher Park.
Catholic (33-7) found Meade County a formidable opponent. The Lady Waves worked on Catholic pitcher Hadley Clark early, getting three hits off her and putting runners in scoring position in the second and third innings before Clark settled in.
Catholic catcher Jessica Adkins, who has been on teams with Clark since the seventh grade, knew her pitcher would find the zone that has led Clark to a 25-1 record.
"A lot of times I just talk to her," Adkins said. "She's usually pretty calm out there. Nothing frustrates her, and she has that much confidence in her pitches."
Clark allowed only one baserunner over the last four innings, which coincided perfectly with Catholic getting its offense rolling.
Adkins was a huge factor in that part of the game as well for the Lady Aces. After Clark singled with one out in the fourth, Adkins put a ball high in the air to right field. Meade County's Cindy Padgett started going back for it and got a glove on it, but couldn't bring the ball in. The tough play was ruled a hit, and it scored Clark. Megan Dickinson picked up pinch-runner Susan Babb with an RBI single two batters later to give the Lady Aces a 2-0 lead.
Adkins collected another RBI in the fifth when she hit a sharp single up the middle that scored Brianne James. With Clark controlling Meade County (16-13) at the plate, those were all the runs Catholic needed.
"I was just looking for a pitch to hit and a chance to advance the runners," Adkins said.
Catholic coach George Randolph has seen his team get hits when it's needed them all year.
"I'm hoping we can keep swinging the bats," Randolph said.
He thinks Clark will also be ready to roll against Apollo.
"This is her chance," Randolph said. "She hasn't had the chance before to pitch in the regional championship game, and all we can do is put ourselves in the position to be here."

Apollo 3, Grayson County 1 -- The E-Gals haven't advanced this far in the postseason since Coach Melissa Bullington was playing at Apollo.
"Coaching as long as I have, I had hoped all the work would pay off," Bullington said. "We set some high expectations the last couple of years, and didn't meet them. We changed the whole way we set goals. We've worked on the little things."
Apollo (24-14) did enough of those to scratch out two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth. That was enough for the E-Gals as they kept Grayson County from generating much offense until the sixth inning.
Sophomore shortstop Chelsea Riney singled and scored in the third on an RBI single from Emily Priar. Riney got an RBI single of her own with two out in the fourth, bringing in pinch-runner Chassidy McNeely, who was on after Sarah Tanner singled to start the inning.
Apollo has played perhaps its best softball of the season during the regional tournament.
"I don't know if it's been the best, but it's been really good," Riney said.
Grayson County (31-7) got a run in the sixth on Jordan Clemons' RBI single. She advanced to third but was stranded.
Apollo pitcher Emily Gerteisen, who struck out seven, retired Grayson County in order in the seventh for the win.
Randolph warned his team that Apollo would test the Lady Aces.
"The last two games they've hit the ball really well," Randolph said. "Apollo is playing well right now."

9TH DISTRICT TOURNAMENT
No. 1 Catholic breaks loose to claim crown
5/22/2008Clark tosses two-hitter, strikes out 16 in 4-0 win over Apollo
By Mark Mathis
Messenger-Inquirer
The Owensboro Catholic High School softball team got the usual big inning it has come to expect.
Hadley Clark was the usual strikeout machine on the mound for the Lady Aces.
And, as usual, the No. 1 Lady Aces walked off the softball field with the 9th District Tournament championship.
The Lady Aces beat Apollo 4-0 on Wednesday at Parent's Park, fighting the E-Gals through four scoreless innings before breaking out with four runs in the fifth.
"They're known to do that," Apollo coach Melissa Bullington said.
Clark, who struck out the first nine Apollo batters and 16 in all, had the big single up the middle to score two runs in the fifth.
"Hadley took an inside pitch up the middle," Catholic coach George Randolph said. "We hit the ball, but we didn't string anything together until the fifth."
Emily McCarty singled to start the inning, but was thrown out on a bunt attempt. Emily Jolly came up at the top of the order and tripled to left-center field, scoring Carly Kaelin.
"She had been 0-for-2 then one-hopped the fence," Randolph said. "Hadley got the two big RBIs. We started taking the ball where it was pitched."
Clark felt good about her team's chances to have a big inning. It has been happening all year as Catholic has built a 31-7 record.
"We didn't score until the fifth, but I never felt like we were down," Clark said. "I felt like we would put something together, and we finally did."
Clark's work on the mound was stunningly efficient. She allowed just two hits and saw only one Apollo baserunner get into scoring position.
"The first time around I threw all hard stuff and didn't use my change-up, then the second time I tried to work the change-up in," Clark said. "I was trying to keep them guessing."
Apollo looked timid at the plate, with players almost expecting to struggle against Clark, who is now 23-1.
"She's a great pitcher," Bullington said. "She came out to control the game. We weren't confident coming to the plate. It looked like we had a little fear in us this time."
Catholic has won six of the last seven district titles, and in five of the last six district championship games has now outscored its opponents 26-0.
Both Catholic and Apollo advance to next week's 3rd Region Tournament, also at Parent's Park.
Emily Gerteisen pitched well, and she kept Catholic under control through four innings.
"When you play the same team, it makes it difficult," Randolph said. "They know what you do, you know what they do. To play a team a third time and get a shutout, you've got to be pleased with that."

Plain's 3-run homer powers E-Gals
5/21/2008Gerteisen tosses shutout as Apollo tops Daviess, 4-0
Messenger-Inquirer
Apollo High School's Hillary Plain is proof dynamite can come in a small package.
Listed at 5-foot-5 on the E-Gals' roster, the junior belted a first-pitch, three-run homer over the fence 198 feet away in left field.
The blast broke open a scoreless contest in the fifth inning as Apollo beat Daviess County 4-0 in the first round of the 9th District Softball Tournament at Owensboro Catholic. The win puts the E-Gals into today's 5:30 p.m. championship game at Parent's Park.
"It's a big win for us," Apollo coach Melissa Bullington said. "I'm proud of all the girls."
The fireworks in the fifth were the lone outburst in what otherwise was a pitchers' duel between Apollo's Emily Gerteisen and Daviess County's Katie Perkins.
Gerteisen struck out seven, walked two, hit a batter and got out of big jam in the third inning. Perkins was also effective, allowing four hits, striking out six and walking three.
The E-Gals made being aggressive at the plate a priority after a 1-0 loss over the weekend to Shelby County in a game where Gerteisen struck out 10, Bullington said.
Plain took the advice to heart.
"We knew she was coming first-pitch strike," she said. "It was there for me. It was a nice pitch. It felt good when it came off the bat."
Emily Priar opened the deciding fifth inning with a walk. Shelby Williams followed with a single to set up Plain's game-deciding shot.
Apollo (22-13) added its fourth and final run on an error.
The Lady Panthers (17-16) had a shot at taking the lead in the third when Courtney Biggs and Samantha Hines led off with singles.
Carri Crisp then hit a shot to the second baseman, but an interference call led to the first out of the inning and took away a run.
With a runner back at second, and one at first, Gerteisen got out of inning by retiring the next two batters on ground balls.
Daviess County left 10 runners stranded for the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh.
"We didn't come up to the plate and hit the ball," Daviess County coach Matt Mason said. "Apollo, they came out ready and they capitalized on the situation. We've been in situations all year where we've come back from being down a few runs. We never give up, that's the big thing."
Biggs and Hines had two hits each for Daviess County.
Apollo had struggled against Perkins in the past, and the E-Gals split games with Daviess County during the regular season.
The win will give Apollo a confidence boost heading into today's title game against No. 1-ranked Catholic.
"She's a very confident pitcher," Bullington said of Perkins. "We couldn't let her get in control.

Lady Aces roll by Owensboro in first-round game
5/20/2008
Messenger-Inquirer
Owensboro Catholic High School's loss to Christian County last weekend was a gentle reminder leading into the postseason that the Lady Aces should stay on task.
No. 1-ranked Catholic did just that in the opening round of the 9th District Tournament as the Lady Aces beat Owensboro 15-0 in three innings.
The loss "served a good purpose," Catholic catcher Jessica Adkins said. "It kept us motivated to work in practice and to run out every ball because you never know when this could be your last game."
Catholic (30-7) jumped on Owensboro (2-19) with five first-inning runs and eight in the second. OHS pitcher Kasie Boone struggled with her control, but when she hit the strike zone, the Lady Aces made solid contact.
Adkins, who went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in, got things started with a two-run single. Three batters later, Emily Hayden drove the ball off the centerfield wall for a two-run triple.
"There's a reason they're the No. 1 team in the state," OHS coach Bryan Kasey said. "That's probably the best-coached team in the state. Their girls start at such a young age, and that's what we want to do, too.
"We've got to improve our seeding so we don't have to face them (in the first round) again."
Catholic had 15 hits, including three by interim leadoff hitter Brianne James, who moved from second in the lineup to first when Emily Jolly sat out with a minor shoulder injury. James had two singles and a two-run double off the wall in right in three at-bats.
"Brianne could bat leadoff because she can bunt or slap-hit, and she's got power," Randolph said. "But we decided our best average hitter would lead off because that would mean 10 or 15 more at-bats over the course of the season rather than batting third or fourth."
Catholic scored all eight of its runs in the second inning after two outs. Carly Kaelin and James each drove in a pair of runs while Elizabeth Fenwick, Meghan Dickinson, Emily McCarty and Adkins had one apiece.
Catholic ended the game in the third inning with a pair of runs on four hits as Randolph used all pinch-hitters.
"We've been swinging the bats really well the last week, and a lot of people got big hits tonight," Randolph said. "We've got a lot of kids who have worked hard and are waiting to play on a regular basis."
Adkins said no matter who Randolph plays, the team has confidence.
"We knew we had to play our best because upsets always happen," she said. "But Morgan (Rudy subbing for Jolly) did a good job at shortstop. "We had a lot of young girls playing different positions because of injuries the last few games, but we just played Catholic softball."
Pitcher Hadley Clark got the win in the abbreviated game shortened by the mercy rule. She threw a no-hitter, struck out seven and walked one.
OCHS advanced to the district championship game at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday against the winner of today's Apollo-Daviess County game.

Ohio recovers to post 8-6 win over McLean
5/21/2008
Messenger-Inquirer
GREENVILLE -- Ohio County High School found itself in a 6-0 first-inning hole, and Lady Eagles coach Jessica Daugherty greeted her team at the dugout door with a stern message.
Start playing hard or go home.
"I have to raise my voice once in a while, and that usually does the job," Daugherty said as Ohio County fought back and defeated McLean County 8-6 in an opening-round game of the 10th District Softball Tournament on Tuesday night at Muhlenberg South.
"We've been down three or four runs and come back to win, but never six. I had confidence that they would come back. Confidence is the key, and they rose to the challenge."
Ohio County (11-14) will play Muhlenberg North (22-11) for the title at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The Lady Eagles chipped away at McLean County (9-24) with one run in the bottom of the first, four in the third inning, then took the lead with two in the fourth. Courtney Albin's run-scoring double tied the game at 6, and Ashley Stewart put Ohio County ahead for good with a rocket off the left-center field fence that scored Albin.
"Since we beat them twice in the regular season, I think we underestimated them a little bit," said Albin, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two stolen bases. "I was kind of worried when we got down six.
"You can't just go up there and expect to get one monster hit and get back into it. You've got to stack the bases and give a team effort."
McLean County did just that in the first inning as an upset brewed. The Lady Cougars sent 12 batters to the plate, and Bailey Roberts and Brooke Little both had two-run hits.
"That was the best first inning we've ever had," McLean County coach Ryan Humphrey said. "I couldn't control them in the dugout. They had me pumped up, too.
"We played well the rest of the game, but Ohio County hit balls in the gap and there's nothing you can do about that."
Ohio County batted around in the third inning, scoring four runs on RBIs by Hali Gaither, the winning pitcher, Albin and Stewart, and a throwing error.
The Lady Eagles finished with just six hits, but stole six bases and took advantage of eight walks and five errors.
"Katie (Henderson) and Courtney didn't play last year but came back this year, and they've been a tremendous help," Daugherty said. "They've played on winning basketball and soccer teams here, and they're dedicated to winning."
Albin said it's been four years since Ohio County has been to the regional softball tournament, and enough is enough.
"We decided we weren't going to lose," she said.
McLean County's Megan West and Roberts both went 3-for-4.
Ohio County's Sabrina Ruby went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases.
