Coach Jones' Rutgers Match Story
Kutztown University Rugby kicked off their home schedule on Sunday September 7,2008, due to the previous day's postponement caused by hurricane Hanna. The opposition was the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University and the match was played in the Kutztown University football stadium. The Golden Bears were looking at this match , along with the up-coming fixture with Georgetown University, as two pre-season matches before launching into the MARFU Premier League on September 27, 2008. The league opener will be a home game with the University of Maryland Terrapins. Rutgers came to town with an improved resume .In 2007 , the Scarlet Knights broke into the America Rugby News Division One National Top Twenty Five Rankings at the # 24 spot. Despite the fact that they competed at the division two level and won the 2007 Met Union Division Two Championship. Their side was led by Johannes Cronje, an excellent South African flyhalf who tested the Golden Bear's back three defenders with high up and unders in the Kutztown red zone, while numerous Rutgers players sped down field and applied pressure, as the ball descended into the waiting hands of the isolated Kutztown wingers and fullback. This tactic led to the majority of the Rutgers points and was very effective on the narrow football field . Needless to say , the field dimensions held a slight advantage for the Scarlet Knights and the patented wide attack of Kutztown was slightly curtailed. However, the Kutztown forwards answered the call , as they controlled the majority of the set pieces and had flashes of brilliance in attack . Several times they mounted devastating forward rushes with brilliant episodes of continuous off-loads to one another in support. All in all , Kutztown touched down nine times and won the game going away in the second half, 55-24 . The Golden Bear scoring was led by hooker Chris Pettine , flanker Jim Fitzgerald and freshmen winger Tim Acker. Look for the Bears to supply a lot more speed on the wings this year , as several young speed merchants have evolved . The wide ball attack promises to be very exciting with the likes of Tim Acker, Sean Healy , Pat Vymazal and Mark Eichner hauling the mail. RUN WITH THE BEARS Doc Doc Jones

Coach Jones' Sweet 16 Story
Kutztown vs Bowling Green / USA Rugby Sweet Sixteen . Kutztown University Rugby was on a collision course with destiny. All of the anticipation, planning and strategy of two consecutive rugby seasons bonded , the instant those wheels of United flight 241, hit the runway, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The team departed from the plane , feeling relaxed but yet focused. However, no one could help but wonder what the weekend held for the Golden Bears. The U.S.A. rugby world, west of the Mississippi was clamoring all season about the high national rankings that were bestowed upon the small college from Pennsylvania. They had never seen the Bears play and had little respect for the undefeated champions of the newly established MARFU Premier League. They slightly acknowledged Kutztown's victories over last year's final four participants, Penn State and Navy. However there was always an undercurrent of disbelief that Penn State was rebuilding and Navy probably didn't start their best side against the Bears and got caught off guard. So the team and staff knew that all eyes were going to be focused on the squad in Albuquerque. There were those diehard west coast fans that were insulted by the publicity of the little upstart school from back east and there were those curious rugby fans that were waiting for a new heavy weight to emerge. Front row seats were at a premium. The team settled into the Hotel Blue, in the bowels of Albuquerque's hardened and down trodden center city, on infamous "Route 66". The barren desert was a suitable backdrop for a city that seemed to stop in time when the clock struck midnight, on new year's eve, 1969. But the Mexican food was a delight and the desert scenery was a new experience for most of the players. The team drove out to the Balloon Festival Park and were delighted to see eight emerald green fields with regulation goal posts shimmering in the sun . It was quite a spectacle to observe so much green grass in a sea of brown desert. The team had checked in with USA Rugby the night before and strode through the gates and onto the pitch . Bowling Green looked like they deserved to be the undefeated champions of the Midwest. They were big and looked confident as they ran through their warm-up drills, but did they deserve to be the favorites in this match-up with the undefeated champions of the Middle Atlantic Region. This was college rugby at its best, on every field, a champion was taking on a champion. The atmosphere was electric when Kutztown kicked off and instantly dominated Bowling Green with ferocious defense and blistering attacks. Within three minutes it was Kutztown 5 -0 and they never released the pressure .At the twelve minute mark it was all Kutztown 12-0 . Then all of a sudden, it was distinctively recognizable when Bowling Green's South African flyhalf,Nick Viviani stood off of one of their rucks and calmly gave instructions to his backs . He took the pass from his scrumhalf and instantly became the field general that he was noted to be throughout their fourteen game winning streak. When he settled down , all the brown jerseys settled down. It was then that Bowling Green began to claw their way back into the game. Viviani was instrumental in scoring all of their first half points and at the break ,the score read KU 17 BG 12. The Falcons were here to stay , even though the Kutztown game out wide was giving them fits, Viviani kept his cool and always found a way to apply pressure with his boot or lead his players to a gap. The two teams battled back and forth for the next thirty five minutes and with the score in favor of Kutztown 22-20 , Viviani hit a massive penalty kick, to thrust the Falcons into the lead 23-22, for the first time in the game. It didn't look good for the Bears, as the partisan Falcon crowd went wild and smelled victory with a few minutes remaining on the clock. However, don't forget another young South African by the name of Marco Barnard , as he shouted instructions to his experienced Golden Bear backline. They had been slipping through gaps the whole game and running wide on Bowling Green's stretched defense, they were confident that they could do it again, even under all of those pressure packed circumstances. Now, with about three minutes to play, Kutztown forced a turnover as they poached a ball out of a Bowling Green ruck and regained possession at midfield. Barnard was signaling and placing his backs in position as he took a wide pass from his flyhalf, Josh Keys. Everyone in the park knew the ball was going wide , including the Falcon defense, as they sent everyone wearing brown and orange running for their lives to spread out and defend the perimeter. Then as if it was choreographed on a broadway stage , Barnard ran wide and attracted several defenders as he sent the ball on a twenty yard spiral to the outstretched hands of the speeding winger, Mike McNallen, and in the most brilliant move of his illustrious career, McNallen switched with the Bears center Marco Cardillo . The Falcon defenders were momentarily stunned as they tried to react to Cardillo cutting inside them and literally froze in the moment, as the talented Marco Cardillo raced for the promise land untouched and dotted down for the game winner and his second try of the day.The game officially ended a few minutes later but for all intended purposes, it was in the record books when Cardillo touched down. Bowling Green couldn't recover from that move, and at that moment in the contest, it proved to be devastating. Bowling green was now 14-1 and Kutztown was advancing to America's Elite Eight.

Coach Jones' Syracuse Match Story
It was nine o'clock on Saturday morning and I met all the freshmen at the rugby field. It was the age old tradition of rookies setting up the field for game day. However, on this day, there wasn't a lot for them to do because the field was covered with two inches of snow . No one could find the lines and it was hovering near thirty four degrees with a forecast of rain. I was concerned because the Syracuse University rugby team was en-route and it was going to be a sloppy day of rugby. We held the team breakfast and watched as more snow descended on the campus, but when the squad left the cafeteria, we were drenched in sunshine. When we reported to the field for taping and warm-up , the snow had evaporated and the ground was heavy , but in a semi-solid marsh like condition. The footing was going to be slow but the lines were visible and Luckenbill Ave. was playable.
Syracuse was coming to town with a 10-3 record from last semester and a 2-0 record this season. Their only losses being at the hands of Northeast regional qualifiers, Brockport University and the University of Buffalo. They had also sustained a loss early in the fall while on tour to Canada. They fell to Canadian collegiate powerhouse Queens University. The Orangemen were coming to Kutztown with a very respectable record and very positive press releases in the national rugby internet magazines. They were anxious to test themselves against a team of Kutztown's caliber and reputation.
Kutztown opened the day's action with a high end over end kickoff to the Orangemen and just like that, Syracuse deviated from the norm and spun the ball out to their backs and attacked from behind their own twenty two. Needless to say they caught some people off guard and ate up a sizeable chunk of real estate as they let everyone know they were here to play. The momentum was in their favor and they ground their way to the Kutztown red zone with a pack of big powerful forwards that were not intimidated one iota by the maroon and gold jerseys. At the four minute mark , one of their tight five fell on the ball in the end zone as the Orangemen worked their forward pack with aggressive precision. All of a sudden the Golden Bears were holding a meeting under the posts, as the Syracuse place-kicker missed the conversion. SU 5 KU 0 .At the ten minute mark, Kutztown swung the ball wide in the vicinity of their own thirty yard line and found the outstretched hands of Marco Barnard. He turned the corner and zigzagged his way through several defenders and into daylight for an electrifying jaunt of seventy yards and paydirt. Ewan Maisey converted and the scoreboard read KU 7 SU 5 . Both teams spent ten minutes wrestling back and forth at midfield when Marco Barnard ran wide to his right, straightened up, just enough to freeze his defender , dished off to fullback Ewan Maisey who in turn found Mike Mcnallen racing down the sideline. MacNellan was under pressure from the angling defenders and twenty yards later dished the ball back to Ewan Maisey. Ewan cut inside and was ten yards from the goal line when a Syracuse defender twisted him to his left. Ewan was going down but instinctively looked for support and found flyhalf Josh Keys trailing the play at full pace. Ewan dished off to Josh and he dove under the posts with a Syracuse defender hot on his heels. Ewan converted and the score was KU 14 SU 5 . At the 30 minute mark , Marco Barnard called for the kicking tee on a penalty call near the midfield stripe. He lined up the ball and proceeded to launch it through the uprights and ten yards beyond the dead ball line. It was a massive kick and sent out a proclamation that Kutztown was capable of scoring anywhere inside the opposition's half of the field. I have seen kicks of this magnitude , demoralize many rugby teams and I thought it might have the same effect on the Orangemen. To my amazement, not one Syracuse player dropped their head or muttered a word. Eight minutes later they were knocking on Kutztown's door with that physical tight five banging away on the goal line. They got in, KU 17 SU 10. The half ended with the Golden Bears on their way to the sidelines and a few suggestions about tactical changes. The Bears had challenged the Syracuse forwards and came away with a stalemate . Syracuse had neutralized the challenge and were successful at slowing down the Kutztown ball out of the rucks , while their personnel reorganized on the defensive side of the ball. Kutztown now realized where the orange crush resided and it was time to change the attack .
When the Bears received the restart for the second stanza, it was quite evident that Syracuse was going to be seeing a different picture. Marco Barnard caught the kick-off and ran hell-bent for leather towards the center of the field as the Kutztown forwards ran off his right flank and the backline was formed on his left, just when everyone in the house expected him to pass the ball wide, he offloaded a sweet little pass inside, to a trailing Derk Scheepers . The Kutztown # 8 kicked it into high gear and ran through the Orangemen at a blistering pace , down to the Syracuse ten yard line. Kutztown spent the next few minutes in the Syracuse red zone , applying pressure with their forwards but to no avail as the Orange Crush stood up and beat back the onslaught. Finally, the ball went wide and inside center Marco Cardillo sliced through an arm tackle and then ricocheted off an orange jersey and into the end zone , near the posts. KU 24 SU 10 . Surely this took some of the steam out of the Syracuse attack. Not so quick my friend. Five minutes later Syracuse picks up an errant ball lost in contact and takes the turnover down to the Kutztown twenty yard line and sends their big horses smashing into the gain line where their outside center gets an off load and races into the house untouched. KU 24 SU 17Kutztown restarts with a deep kick into the corner , where a Syracuse player catches the ball but has it jarred lose by a tackle, producing a bouncing ball that ends up in the hands of Kutztown 2nd row Greg Brooks. Greg runs down the sideline and right before being driven out of bounds, near the goal line , he off loads a soft pass into the hands of Kutztown flanker Cory Collins for the try. Marco Barnard hits an impossible angle kick from the sideline and Kutztown vaults ahead 31-17 . On the next restart , Barnard puts the ball in the same deep corner, a Syracuse player mishandles it and Kutztown pressures them into losing the ball on contact. Jason Zinc , who is now in the game as a replacement at fullback , comes up with the rock and swerves through two or three defenders to touch down under the posts. KU 36 SU 17. The match is ticking down with about fifteen minutes left , when Syracuse kicks for touch and puts the ball within five yards of the Kutztown goal line. A driving maul and two or three forward picks from the base of the ruck puts one of the Syracuse flankers in the big house. KU 36 SU 24 .
The Orangemen refuse to go away. Their forwards are playing extremely tough and a few Kutztown miscues combined with the Syracuse tenacity is keeping them within striking distance of the up-set. A few minutes later a tenacious Kutztown defense picks up a turn over situation and center Mike McNallen is of to the races when he comes under pressure and off-loads to Marco Barnard . Barnard picks up some valuable yardage and sets up winger Kyle Moser. The big wing , powers his way into the end zone and dots down just left of the posts. KU 43 SU 24 . The Golden Bears are definitely riding the wave of momentum they had created by capitalizing on Syracuse miscues . In the closing moments of the contest, Marco Barnard was going weakside when he took a wide pass off the base of a ruck and turned the corner eight yards from the end zone. Here he fired a pass to fellow South African and # 8 Dirk Scheepers . Dirk was attacking at full speed when he caught the ball and extended his body parallel to the ground and dove into the corner for a try that would have rated on any sports center "Play of the Week" . A few moments later the referee blew full time and this one was in the record books.
It was a very good test for both sides and Kutztown comes away with the type of match they needed to prepare for next weekend and the University of Delaware. The Golden Bears will depart for Richmond, Virginia on Friday afternoon and put it all on the line as they battle the Blue Hens for a birth in the national sweet sixteen tournament on Saturday , March 29, 2008 at 11AM . The match will be played at Pole Green Park, Richmond, Virginia. CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS!

Kutztown vs Delaware
The next game is always the most important game. On Saturday 11/10/07 at 1PM, the Golden Bear Rugby Club will play the most important game of their season and perhaps the most important game in the club's storied twenty three year history.
The University of Delaware comes into town, ranked 5th in the nation (ARN) and 10th in the nation (Goff) . The (Goff) # 1 ranked and (ARN) 3rd Golden Bears are putting their top national ranking on the line , while simultaneously trying to win the inaugural MARFU Premiere League and finish the fall campaign undefeated. The Blue Hens are hell bent on ruining the Kutztown dream of a perfect season. A Delaware victory could tie them for first place in the Premier League and thrust them into the top spot in the nation, replacing Kutztown and handing the Bears their first defeat of the season. All of this occurring on the last day of the season and the final game of the league schedule. On top of all that, Kutztown and Delaware are bitter rivals, with contrasting styles.
The Blue Hens will pound you with their forwards and concentrate on going north and south, wither they go through you ,or over you, they will never go around you.
The Golden Bears will dazzle you with speed and passing, going north and south, but traversing east and west along the way as they skirt around you. You can take the time to watch paint dry when Delaware has the ball, while Kutztown can score at the blink of an eye. It will be an excellent rugby game, contested by two excellent sides. The stakes are extremely high, for the second week in a row, the Golden Bears are the most important game in the country and the MARFU Premiere League could be the best that collegiate rugby has to offer.

Navy Preview
On Saturday, November 3rd, 2007, Kutztown University will host the United States Naval Academy, for first place in the Middle Atlantic Premiere Division One, Rugby League. It is also being billed as a possible battle for the number one ranking in the nation. I quote www.goffonrugby.com , one of the most respected national rugby news agencies in America. Speaking about the top spot in the upcoming national rankings next week, " The winner of Navy vs Kutztown could well be there. " On another site most respected for their rugby coverage, www.americanrugbynews.com , has Navy ranked # 3 and Kutztown # 5 in the country. On top of all that, Kutztown is undefeated and Navy's only blemish this season, is a draw two weeks ago with the University of Maryland 29 - 29 , the same Terrapin team that Kutztown defeated three weeks prior, 55-15.
On top of all this, Kutztown and Navy are fierce rivals. They have had some epic battles in the past with Kutztown dropping a heart breaker last year, in the Mid Atlantic play-offs, when the Golden Bears scored in the last minute of the contest , to take the lead and the probable victory. Only to have the score nullified by a penalty. The midshipmen were saved from elimination in the national tournament and proceeded to make the National Final Four , finishing third in the nation for 2006. Two weeks later, Kutztown traveled to Annapolis once again. This time to compete in the inaugural Navy Classic Rugby Tournament. Kutztown defeated Navy in the finals and walked away with the hardware, however, neither team played their most potent line-up that day.
So, the stage is set, both teams want desperately to walk away victorious, gaining the most valuable prize, which is first place in the league and the # 1 seed going into the Premier League play-offs on March 29-30, 2008. The top two teams out of the MARFU Premier League play-offs advance to the sweet sixteen of the national collegiate tournament. There are a tremendous number of variables on the table , all very significant to the future success of these two excellent rugby teams.
The match will display the physical, smash mouth style of the large ,athletic Navy forward pack versus the swift, elusive Kutztown backline. The team that controls the possession should be in the driver's seat in any rugby game, but Kutztown could relinquish more possession then normal and still pull this game out of the hat, with their explosive backs, led by 2007 All-American inside center, Marco Barnard, they will be a constant threat to break off a long run and constantly pressure the Navy defense. Throughout the season Kutztown has been working extensively on improving their forward's attack, and have improved dramatically, giving the Golden Bears a much sought after balanced attack .
Travel on out to Luckenbill Ave. this Saturday afternoon and witness two of the most dynamic college rugby teams in America.
You won't be dissapointed, kick-off is slated for one O'clock.

Coaches Game Story
The Kutztown faithful filed down Luckenbill Ave.They took their usual places around the bowl shaped field that the Golden Bears call home and watched silently as they observed the Philadelphia Whitemarsh Men's Club warm-up before them. These behemoths from South Street were running through their pre-game ritual, peppering the silence with international accents from England, Fiji and New Zealand. The Kutztown fans also took note that the former United States Eagle hooker, Matt Wyat was wearing the Whitemarsh colors. This club doesn't have the mundane composite of your local men's club. They are members of the "Super League / Stewart Shield" that represents the highest level of rugby in this country. This club travels throughout the United States competing in this top flight league, in the cities of Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver and Boston to mention a few members of their league. This is the United States' version and our closest facsimile, to a professional rugby league. All of the teams in this league, import international rugby talent and pay for their services. The most competitive part of their season takes place in the spring and their roster is at full strength. The autumn finds their club competing in a competition known as the Stewart Shield, when they are constructing and developing new players and combinations with their "Super League" competitors on the east coast. Their reputation precedes them and the Kutztown fans were buzzing about the obvious mismatch that was about to occur.
The inner sanctum known as the Kutztown coaching staff had scheduled this match six months prior to the impending kick-off. Their logic being , a strong conviction that the Golden Bears would defeat Penn State this year and then took note that the squad had a two week span before hosting the Naval Academy on November third. This format called for a strong opponent and then a bye week. The Whitemarsh venue offered the opportunity to engage a heavy, experienced forward pack, that would represent and possibly mirror the same physical tools that Navy will bring to the table. This challenge to the Kutztown forwards was multifaceted, and these are some of the questions that had to be addressed. Could the Golden Bears consistently hold the ball in contact and could they feed their talented back line enough ball to be productive ? Would the first phase platforms (scrums / lineouts) be cohesive against such odds ? How would the lighter college squad fair against the continuity produced by the tight, hammering and pounding style of the super league ? Could the Kutztown backs be patient and capitalize on critical possession ? How would the undefeated Bears react to adversity. Each question and situation had to be observed and evaluated.
After their victory in Happy Valley, the Bears were also vulnerable to the mental letdown common to teams coming off a huge win. Another paramount consideration was the intimidation factor that the Super League team brought to the table. All of these factors are very similar in weighing the current number one nationally ranked Navy war machine that is slated to sail into Luckenbill Ave in a fortnight. The Whitemarsh match, no matter the result, was the perfect precursor for the midshipmen. The reality of the Bears world, lies in the fact, that they have secured a spot in the MARFU Premiere League play-offs come the last weekend of March 2008 , but they must defeat Navy, on their way to capturing the MARFU Premier League crown and securing the best possible seed for the league play-offs. This seed will be paramount on the pathway to the national sweet sixteen tournament.
The Golden Bears took the field and veteran referee, Dan Dahony presided, as Whitemarsh sent a high end over end kick into the midst of the maroon jerseys. The Bears responded by dropping the ball out of bounds and the tourist formed a concise driving maul off their lineout reward, that resulted in a score. It was to easy and the Bears looked intimidated. Kutztown kicked off and the visitors moved methodically within the Bears red zone. Here the Whitemarsh forwards exhibited a menagerie of tight fisted power moves that reverberated throughout the paddock. Kutztown stood their ground and fought valiantly as they reeled momentarily, regrouped and marched one step forward as they went two steps backward. This trench warfare lasted six or seven minutes when Philly's kiwi # 8 smashed through a sliver in the defense and grounded the ball in the end zone. It was fifteen minutes into the contest and Whitemarsh had what looked like a very convincing 10 - 0 lead. The Golden Bears kicked off once again. The visitors made a careless mistake, lost the ball and something significant happened. Kutztown captain Marco Barnard made a break, found himself inside the opposition's red zone, drew the attention of several defenders and off-loaded inside to a enterprising Jim Fitzgerald who had taken a support angle that guided him into the end zone unmolested and he touched down between the posts. The clock ticked off five more minutes and Bears hooker Chris Pettine demonstrated why he is one of the brightest stars in the Kutztown galaxies, when he took a flat pass at full speed, ricocheted off two defenders and powered his way into the promise land. All of a sudden the scoreboard read Kutztown 12 Whitemarsh 10. The college kids stole the momentum, Whitemarsh took notice and intimidation was no longer a factor. At the thirty minute mark, Marco Barnard found their Achilles heel and directed the Kutztown possessions East and West, as the wide ball eventually took him North and into the end zone. Kutztown 19 Whitemarsh 10 . The Kutztown forwards started an explosive maul off a turnover in the visitors red zone and before they could reorganize their defense,Bears flanker Cory Collins was rolling into the house. Ten minutes later , Ewan Maisey slotted a penalty kick and Kutztown went into the break, 27 - 10. The halftime huddle was quiet and the boys seemed more focused then ever. I don't really know if they were aware of what was happening but it was a classic example of athletes being oblivious to their surroundings and riding a surreal wave of momentum.
The second stanza began the same way the first one ended. Kutztown scored within the next ten minutes and Whitemarsh countered with another score at the sixty minute mark. Kutztown 39 Whitemarsh 17
The Whitemarsh backs were frustrated with the lack of quality ball, but found the fortitude to make the most out of a Kutztown turnover and scored in the corner to bring them within striking distance at 39 - 22 .
The action was becoming increasingly furious as Whitemarsh tried desperately to mount significant attacks and the Golden Bears reached deep to find the fortitude to stop waves of violence in front of their goal line. I mention the word violence because it was at this point when one of the Whitemarsh Fijians bought a yellow card for a couple of cheap shots in a ruck. Kutztown took the ball and quick tapped in the restart, found quick ball from a ruck and passed to # 8 Dirk Schippers as he rocketed between two defenders and scored near the post. At this point, some of the Whitemarsh players lost their composure and the fists started to fly in the loose play. Their forwards were frustrated and the wide Kutztown ball movement had literally taken them out of the game. While they were concentrating on fisticuffs, Marco Barnard was concentrating on rugby, he continuously directed wide attacks and sent Maisey free for a try with Pettine following suit a few moments before full time. The final score read Kutztown 60 - Whitemarsh 22.
The Golden Bears had passed the test with flying colors. The forwards absorbed the physical aspect of the Whitemarsh machine and capitalized on the tourist mistakes. These turnovers produced enough ball to set the Kutztown back line free and spread the Whitemarsh defense across the field, minimizing the effect of their heavier forwards. The wide ball established a work load that was in stride with the younger, fitter college side but found the Whitemarsh troops playing a style not familiar to the bigger, heavier "Super League". It was the age old fable come true, the tortoise tried to run with the hare.
Most importantly, the smiling faces in the winners circle had gained some valuable experience. They will carry today's lessons into their preparation for Navy, where elegant violence, will be the order of the day.

KUTZTOWN 27 PENN STATE 20
How many times have the Kutztown faithful read that headline over the years. Well, if you don't happen to know, I'll be glad to inform you, the answer is never. The Golden Bears have only played Penn State , a half dozen times over the last twenty two years , but
last Saturday was lucky number seven.
On a sunny autumn day in Nittany Valley, with the yellow and gold mountain range as a back drop and a cool autumn breeze blowing in from the north , Kutztown took the field. The field was Penn State's brand spankin new, two million dollar rugby facility with dark
green artificial turf and permanently painted lines that seemed to glisten off the plastic grass. There were tall statuesque rugby post adding a touch of dignity to the scene, like four sentinels, guarding the integrity of the game. All of this encapsulated by an eight foot black wire
fence, that held the throng of blue and white clad alumni, enjoying their 2007 homecoming day. Their homecoming festivities were interrupted by a Kutztown avalanche that produced twenty points in the first twenty five minutes of the contest. Golden Bear's skipper, Marco Barnard broke the ice in the first minute of the match, as he took an offload from fullback Ewan Maisey, who had just sprinted down the sideline and through the Penn State defense for a nifty forty yards. Ewan converted and the Bears were on the scoreboard 7-0 . The Nittany Lions appeared to shake it off as an accidental lapse in their defense and prepared to kick-off to the Bears. Within a few minutes, Kutztown was knocking on the door once again, deep in the Penn State red zone, Ewan Maisey calmly struck a penalty kick and it was Kutztown up by ten. After yet another restart, the Kutztown forwards started in on the prescribed game plan, as they ran three and four abreast. Like a German blitzkrieg, they hurled their bodies into the white jerseys and repeatedly broke the gain line as they chewed up valuable real estate and decimated the Lions midfield defense. From that vantage point, the Bears had the option to attack either side of the field. They produced quick ball and Kutztown's field general, Marco Barnard, could be heard barking orders and directions as he guided his troops into the fray. Down the field they went and on a blindside forward rush, twelve yards from the goal line # 6 Cory Collins took control of the situation and bulldozed his way through four Penn State defenders, as he reached out in the corner and planted the ball over the last stripe. Kutztown was up 15-0 and fifteen minutes into the game. The next ten minutes saw Kutztown play the entire game inside Penn State territory. Chris Pettine, the Kutztown Hooker, was stationed in a designated slot off of the Bears lineouts and when given the ball, he was instrumental in shredding the Lions defense. An alert Marco Barnard interpreted the game a few phases ahead of the action, and along with his running mate Marco Cardillo, sent the maroon jerseys in a rapid wave of precision attacks, left or right, weakside or strong, they never stopped coming, culminating in a powerful maul that sent Penn State reeling. Kutztown's tighthead prop, Steffan Ruff, rolled off all that momentum with the ball and rocketed into the end zone to dot it down left of the posts. Exactly twenty five minutes in and Kutztown was demonstrating superiority at 20-0 .
The Nittany Lions were on the brink of destruction and their captain, All-American scrumhalf Nick Grala gathered his troops under the goal post and reminded them in no uncertain terms who they were and what they represented. The next ten minutes saw Penn State stiffen their defense and started to swing the ball wide at every opportunity, hoping that eventually it would produce an advantage or an overlap in Kutztown's defense. As the Golden Bears flew around the field in defense, outside center Marco Cardillo was penalized for reaching in and not letting go of the ball in a tackle situation. I nor anyone else understood what happened next, the referee pulled out a yellow card and decided to send Cardillo to the sin bin for ten minutes. This was an opportunity that Penn State had to capitalize on and one extra man in their backline was a huge advantage for the home team. The Nittany Lions have an excellent and speedy fullback in Luke Roberts ( Kutztown fans might remember his brother Jessie Roberts, who played # 10 for West Chester and last spring we saw him , when he lined up for the Brandywine RFC ) , who along with a very crafty # 10 Justin Lotter, fired off a barrage of wide ball that eventually sent Roberts into the corner for Penn State's first try. KU 20 PSU 5. Even with a man down, Kutztown was standing toe to toe with the Lions. The Penn State backline worked furiously to create another overlap situation against Kutztown's depleted midfield defense and with only seconds left in the half, Penn State's # 10 Justin Lotter used a dummy to slip through a gap and dot down for the Nittany Lions. The first half ended with Kutztown out in front. KU 20 PSU 10 .
The second stanza started with the momentum still in Penn State's favor, it was only three minutes into the half, when they once again capitalized on Kutztown, still playing with Cardillo in the sin bin. The score now read Kutztown 20 Penn State 15. Less then a minute later, Cardillo re-entered the game and instantly clicked on the confidence, in the Kutztown squad. They gave him the ball and he ripped off yardage with two respectable runs while re-inserting himself with authority on defense. Kutztown was back to full strength and they were playing possessed to try and turn the momentum back their way. At the sixty four minute mark, the Bears turned the ball over on the outer fringe of the Lion's red zone. Chris Pettine took a pass and turned up field , kicked into gear and sped for the goal line like a runaway freight train. Along the way he side stepped a defender and ten yards from the goal line, off loaded in contact, to a speeding ( you guessed it ) Marco Cardillo. Marco ran in untouched and scored next to the right post. Ewan Maisey converted and the score was Kutztown 27 Penn State 15. Penn State never gave up and torqued it up a notch as they proved why they are so dangerous, scoring on the seventy eighth minute to make the final score Kutztown 27 Penn State 20 . It was a tremendous game, with two of the nation's more highly respected programs demonstrating that the MARFU Premier League is a true litmus test for survival, at the highest collegiate level.

Kutztown vs Penn State
K-Town Nation ,
This is the weekend that we have been anticipating for twelve months. Everyone still remembers the disappointment when we walked off the field in late September of last year. Their wasn't any joy but their was a hint of satisfaction because the players and the staff felt like Kutztown had played Penn State very tough. We felt like we had proven to ourselves that we belonged in this elite company. However, that loss didn't arouse any true interest in the national rugby community. They saw it as perhaps Penn State having an off-day and kudos for a good effort by the little school in Pennsylvania. The honest truth is, that on that particular day at Luckenbill Avenue, at the moment of the opening kick-off, no one, on that Kutztown team was absolutely sure, the Golden Bears were going to win the contest.
Now, a year later and a year wiser, I can guarantee you, there won't be one player wearing maroon and gold that doesn't sincerely expect to defeat Penn State on Saturday.
Now, please don't misunderstand, that doesn't guarantee a victory for the small school in Pennsylvania, but it does paint a completely different landscape from which they will toil.
Penn State comes into this match with a record of 2-2 . They defeated the University of Indiana, Pennsylvania ( IUP ) 64 - 3 and the University of Maryland 82 - 14 while playing in the friendly confines of State College. They suffered both of their losses on the road. The first one in Columbus Ohio, were the Buckeyes of Ohio State came out on top 21 - 17. Last week in Wilmington Delaware, they were stunned by the University of Delaware Blue Hens, 29 - 21. The Nitttany Lions are very tough at home. They are capable of scoring a truck load of trys and have an All-American scrumhalf, in Nick Grala, running the show. Their # 10, Justin Loetter, is a product of South Africa and a two time MARFU collegiate stalwart. Together, they are a very dangerous and explosive combination. Don't for one second forget that they represent one of the premiere collegiate rugby programs in the country. Most of all, not only are they playing at home, but are performing in front of their 2007 Homecoming crowd.
Kutztown will enter the arena in the midst of a sea of blue and white partisans. The environment will be hostile, the situation daunting, to say the least. Penn State articles in the school newspaper, "The Collegian" speak of the bitter loss at Delaware and comments by the players and coaches on how they must increase the team's intensity level for the showdown with Kutztown. This is being billed by the national rugby media, as the game of the week. This will be a " Test Match" situation for the Golden Bears , they must show that they can win when it counts the most, no matter what the situation, home or away ! The Golden Bears are finally were they have always wanted to be, in the national spotlight. Sporting a perfect 4-0 slate, they truly have something to prove, not only to the national rugby community, but most of all, to themselves.

Coaches Pulse of the Team Report
The Golden Bears went to Blacksburg Virginia with some glaring question marks based on their performance of the last three matches. Admittedly they scored a lot of points and dominated the three previous teams they faced. However, they scored in bunches with long lapses of concentration and a lack of team continuity in between touchdowns. There were some awesome individual efforts but few signs of those team virtues that bind clubs and produce championships. The backline would swing the ball wide and race down the sidelines untouched two or three times a match, but in the next few minutes, the backs would completely forget where they were on the field and throw the ball around, risking disaster, never showing signs of reorganization or regard for the work level being distributed to the forwards. On the other hand, the forwards spent countless minutes looking like a disorganized mob, wandering about aimlessly without purpose. Each unit (Backs and Forwards) had taken on their own identity or lack thereof and never found one another for what seemed like endless amounts of time. Then there were the penalties and the lack of urgency that appeared to permeate the side from number one through fifteen. The Golden Bears were playing on their reputation, they had lost the eye of the tiger and I envisioned disaster, right around the corner.
Before we departed for Va.Tech. , I announced a side with some changes. Dirk Scheepers was sitting out his mandatory red card suspension and Cory Collins was finally running on his injured ankle but he was still questionable. I was planning on giving him thirty minutes of match fitness if possible.Mike McNallen was at his sister's wedding. Jared Benedict would start on the wing for Mac and Tommy Slavin was moving to # 8 in place of Dirk. Jim Fitzgerald would play weakside flanker and Steve DeAngelis was switching places with Gregg Brooks, after Steve's outstanding reserve performance the preceding week against Maryland. The other second row would be Joe Gobelieskwi and Steffan Ruff moved onto the first side at tighthead prop. He had an outstanding reserve appearance at Maryland and has had very strong practices the last two weeks.Ted Griffith moved out from second row and played on the strongside flank. This was a very mobile pack, along with hooker Chris Pettine and loosehead prop Jessie Hudock. It was not our biggest combination but it was our quickest and there were some newcomers that might bring some urgency to the forwards, lest they squander this chance to be in the starting line-up. Let me comment on the idea of being in the starting line-up. It is an accomplishment, but it is not the most important thing that you can accomplish in your rugby career at Kutztown. The starting line-up in my estimation is not the players only wearing numbers one through fifteen. The starters at Kutztown wear numbers one through twenty two. All of those individuals contribute unequivocally toward the club's successes on any given Saturday. Whether you consider their contribution profound or abstract, it is of the utmost importance to the end result. That is the equation, of the big picture, within it , team equals championship. But can this group of young men decipher that equation and bind together for the end result in November. That was the main question when they took the field at Va. Tech. This was their last chance to improve before traveling to Penn State and a long anticipated date with the Nittany Lions.
Well, the Va. Tech game turned out to be the best game of the season. The team played unselfish rugby and the forwards scored six of the nine trys on the day, as the backline rushed up field and called on charging forwards when near the goal line. For the first time this season, I could see the glimpses of continuity and the all important communication factor. For the moment and at practice this week, the Golden Bears are working hard to get back on the track of total team rugby.

KU DEFEATS MARYLAND
In the second Premier League match of the season , Kutztown University defeated the University of Maryland 55-15. The Golden Bears drew first blood at the three minute mark , when they swung the ball wide, Ewan Maisey found a slot and off-loaded to Mike McNallen, who galloped thirty five yards down the sideline untouched . The tone of the match was set and Maryland's week long preparation of stopping Kutztown from going wide had failed at the onset. After the kick-off, Kutztown continued to move the ball wide and found themselves with a lineout , ten yards from the goalline. A driving maul ensued and hooker Chris Pettine rolled off to touch down after six minutes. The Bears retreated for another kick-off , leading 10-0. Maryland pinned the Bears in their own end for several minutes as the Terrapins rallied for a very strong defensive effort. Kutztown was under a great deal of pressure as they fought off one Maryland goal line charge after another. Maryland's massive # 8 Nick Weidmann, hit the Golden Bear line three times and three times he was denied. However, throughout the remainder of the match, Mr. Weidmann reeked havoc on the Kutztown defenders as he scored two of Maryland's three trys on the day.
Marco Barnard finally kicked the ball ahead and retrieved his own kick at the twenty
two meter line. He proceeded to juke a player and then sent a wide bullet pass of nearly twenty yards, on the money, to a sprinting Mike McNallen. Mac took the mail sixty yards and dotted down under the post. Kutztown 17 Maryland 0 .
It was ten minutes later when Tommy Slavin swerved through Maryland's weakside defense and found the end zone for a touchdown in the corner. Tommy Slavin is a sophomore flanker , playing big time rugby in a big time league.
Mike McNallen made another break at the thirty seven minute mark and found himself flying down the sideline for about forty yards , when he sent an inside pass Marco Barnarnd's way and Kutztown led at the break 29 - 0 .
The second half saw Kutztown's 2nd row, Gregg Brooks receive a yellow card, for allegedly coming into a ruck from the side when in fact, he was merely picking up a ball, off of the floor that had become available. So with a man down and the Maryland pack already much heavier per man, the Golden Bears sent in reserve prop Stefan Ruff to replace veteran Jessie Hudock along with Andrew Perkins at the hooker position for an injured Chris Pettine. These moves and weight distribution stabilized the pack and the Bears once again started to channel controlled ball on the put-in. In the next ten minutes the Bears emptied the reserve bench and Kutztown substituted the entire seven allowed players. Marco Cardillo took a hard knock to the ribs and left the match. Golden Bear scrumhalf, Gordon Ralph moved to outside center and J.D. Zinc filled in at # 9 . A few minutes later the ball moved down the line and Gordon took a gap that turned into a nifty attack , as he touched down just left of the posts.Within five minutes, flanker Jim Fitzgerald ran straight to the goal line as he supported the backline's movement and the Bears were cruising at 43-0. As the match progressed , the Bears made some mistakes in the red zone, resulting in two Maryland trys and the scoreboard read Kutztown 43 Maryland 10 . But the action wasn't over and the Terps formidable # 8 , Nick Wiedmann rumbled into the end zone for yet another score. Kutztown tightened up their defense and took control in the last ten minutes of the contest , Josh Keys and Marco Barnard each scored respectively and the final whistle blew with Kutztown sailing home victorious , 55-15. The only real negative in the match was the fact that Kutztown's outstanding # 8 , Dirk Scheepers received a "Red Card" for talking. He was being awarded a yellow card for allegedly going over the top when he asked his teammate Marco Barnard a question in their native Afrikaans language. The referee instantly accused Dirk of saying something derogatory about his ethnic background and awarded the red card. This means that Dirk is automatically suspended from playing for one week . The team is awaiting the full penalty which will be announced by the MARFU Disciplinary Board on Thursday. This means that he will be on the sidelines for the Va. Tech match and could possibly receive two more weeks suspension on top of the mandatory one week. Cory Collins is a doubtful starter for this weekend , as he continues to rehabilitate a high ankle sprain. Mike McNallen will not be on the wing versus Va. Tech this weekend , as he attends his sister's wedding. However the Golden Bears will take the field with some young reserve talent, that will excitedly rush into the fields of fire and come away with valuable experience and a Gold side match to their credit. One of the young freshman moving up to the gold side reserve unit for the first time, is outside center / wing , Kerry Fryberg from Coatesville Pa. Keep an eye on this young man, he has a lion's heart and great speed to go with it.

Coaches Update
This is an update on the young season and the progress of the team. The practice numbers have been very good , with the majority of the club's 46 members attending practice on a regular basis five nights a week. We average 40 players per practice, that also includes the 7AM fitness training, three mornings each week. The veteran players are dedicated to the team goals and maintaining their place among the nation's top ten division one teams. At the time of this article , they find themselves ranked # 6 in the nation by www.americanrugbynews.com and www.goffonrugby.com has them ranked # 10 in the country. We now refer to the 1st side as the Gold side and the 2nd side is the Maroon side. Each side has a captain and a coach. I find it imperative that each side has a true identity and personal pride in their work ethic and their accomplishments. Every member of the club has to have their nitch and know exactly were they stand and have a clear and defined path for improvement and advancement.
The Gold side is led by their All-American captain and inside center, Marco Barnard. An excellent MARFU representative player and weakside flanker, Cory Collins is the vice captain. The forward pack leader is another standout MARFU representative player, eighthman Dirk Scheepers. The President of the club and starting winger , Kyle Travelett does a tremendous job on and off the field , as he functions as the main liaison between the club and the University. These four young men are responsible for the successful management of the club and deserve a major amount of recognition and accolades for the club's success.
The Gold side has a record of two wins and no losses , after defeating East Stroudsburg 51-5 and the University of Virginia 32-7. The side is working very hard to correct the early season mistakes that have denied the team of their game day continuity and rhythm. The forwards have improved in their lineout play and scrummaging appears to be on firm ground. The backline will get a boost this weekend when the ever dangerous and explosive Marco Barnard and his running mate, also a very dynamic and rock solid outside center and MARFU representative, Marco Cardillo, return to the lineup after their absence in the Virginia game. These two centers, the M&M boys, can play as well together, as you might hope to see in America's collegiate game. Another two MARFU representative players, winger Mike McNallen and fullback Ewan Maisey anchor the back three along with Kyle Travellett. Ewan Maisey has been playing exceptional rugby and saved the day against Virginia , when he foiled Virginia's repeated advancements with his well placed counter kicks. Scrumhalf Gordon Ralph has been delivering crisp ball and gives the team intelligent leadership around the scrum and in the loose play. Flyhalf Josh Keys has made the switch from # 9 and continues to develop every day at his new position. This summer he started at flyhalf for the Lehigh Valley 7's team and competed in the national tournament, in Pelham Washington , along with Golden Bear's Jim Fitzgerald and Jared Benedict. Marco Barnard also played in the national 7's tournament as a member of the New York Athletic Club. In the forward pack, last year's freshman sensation and MARFU representative hooker, Chris Pettine moves back to the number two jersey after playing inside center against Virginia. Veteran hooker and also a one time MARFU representative , now a graduate student in his fifth year of eligibility, Andrew Perkins wore the number two jersey in the first two matches , but will now be the pack leader on the Maroon side and continue to see Gold playing time at hooker, along with Pettine. Joe Golebiewski continues to do an outstanding job at tighthead prop and 2nd row when called on to do so . His loose play , along with Loosehead prop Jessie Hudock give the Golden Bears a very mobile and experienced front row.Sophomore Gregg Brooks has played very solid at 2nd row , as his 6'5 frame continues to mature in stature, as well as a player. Ted Griffith, another 6'5 MARFU representative player gives us tremendous athleticism on the openside flanker position as well as at 2nd row.Sophomore Tommy slavin has filled in for injured Cory Collins on the weakside flanker position and demands a lot of attention with his aggressive and open style of play. He is definitely a player and will be seeing adequate Gold time as the season progresses. Cory Collins is still hobbled by a high ankle sprain and has made significant progress in the last week. He is now walking without crutches and receiving medical care and physical therapy. He will not play against Maryland and is possible next week against Va. Tech. We are awaiting the recent MRI report.
The Maroon side is led by their captain and excellent 2nd row, Steve DeAngelis . The vice captain is standout flyhalf , Jason Zinc. Both of these young men are members of the Gold side's twenty five man traveling squad. The Maroon side has one win and one loss. They have defeated East Stroudsburg 35-5 and lost a controversial contest to the University of Virginia 24-19 . The goal of the coaching staff and the captains is to have the Maroon side as strong as the Gold side . You can trust me when I say that the Maroon and Gold forward packs are very close to accomplishing that goal. The Maroon has some outstanding players and potential with transfer student Steffan Ruff and USA U-19 freshman Andrew Angellella leading the charge at the prop positions ,along with versatile eighthman Jeremy Winters. All three, members of the Gold traveling side. I wouldn't say that is true in the case of our backline play. The fact of the matter being that the Gold side's backline from # 9 through # 15, has the potential on any given day to perform as one of the elite collegiate backlines in America. The Maroon backs are for the most part very young and with the exception of two players Jason Zinc and Jared Benedict ( Gold traveling team members) , the rest of the line is in the developmental stages. However, watch for good things to come, from Freshmen Kerry Fryberger , Sean Healy and Tom Fontenasi.
On Saturday 9/29/07 the club will travel to University Park Maryland to take on the University of Maryland Terrapins in a MARFU Premier League match. The Gold side kicks off at 1PM , followed by the Maroon match.

Coach Jones' Year in Review
K-Town Nation,
The 2006-07 season has finally ended , with the culmination of the George Betzler Invitational High School Tournament. The tournament was a huge success , with Valley Forge H.S.winning the championship match over the Doylestown RFC. However the success lies in the management of the event. The tournament director , Tracy Artus and her husband Bob, along with Sean Collins, organized the Kutztown Parents Association into a co-coordinated effort that produced the best rugby event ever held at Luckenbill Avenue. Kudos must also go out to Kyle Travellet , Cory Collins and their Kutztown teammates that gave tremendous support to the overall effort. Thank You.
This is with out a doubt, the most accomplished year of rugby witnessed by the K-Town Nation. Starting with the opening weekend , when the Golden Bears had the collegiate rugby world sit up and take notice as they routed two well respected Canadian programs, Calverton University and the Royal Canadian Military College, at their home grounds in Ottawa and Kingston. A close loss to 2007 "Final Four" participant Penn State, proved to the players and KU fans, that the Golden Bears were improving on the national scene. The Golden Bears were never challenged in the EPRU , as they moved unobstructed into the EPRU Finals. Here the hierarchy of the EPRU set the stage for the most disgusting defeat in Kutztown history, when the "postage stamp" field fiasco was allowed to occur and Delaware went home the champions. The spring season opened with decisive wins over highly touted Ohio State and Maryland. The Golden Bears moved up in the national rankings and the spring trip to Florida was a major success . A couple of warm-up games with club sides Boca Raton and West Palm Beach proved effortless. Then a convincing victory over the number one rated college team in the sunshine state, Florida Atlantic University. The next challenge was the MARFU quarterfinal game with Navy. A game that was being heralded as the # 6 Navy vs. # 7 Kutztown. Kutztown had a winning try called back with two minutes left in the game and Navy dodged the bullet. It was a disappointing lose for many people in the K-Town Nation, but for the coaches and the players, it was a positive turning point in the Golden Bear program. We all knew that we had arrived and in a game of this magnitude , athleticism and lady luck often ride the same roller coaster. Even though Kutztown had less points on the scoreboard, they had finally made the quantum leap to legitimate national recognition and proved that they were the equal to another "Final Four participant, in Navy.
After the disappointing but respectable setback in Annapolis, the Bears had a plan. It was very simple, never stop trying to improve, never stop testing the bar of excellence. So, the very next weekend they hosted and defeated the Brandywine R.F.C. , an excellent division two men's club that hadn't lost a match in ten games and had qualified for the MARFU play-offs.
Then in an act of empowerment, the Golden Bears traveled right back to Annapolis and won the "Navy Invitational ". In doing so, they crushed the same Delaware side , on a regulation field and defeated the Naval Academy's reserve side in the finals. A calculated dissection of a determined Towson side was next on the list. Last but not least, the Golden Bears scored ninety five points against the University of Maryland on the Terps home grounds.
Today, American Rugby News listed their final Top Twenty Five Division One College Rugby Teams. The final ranking of the season finds the Golden Bears ranked # 10 in the nation.
Today ARN also broadcasted Podcast # 42. In that radio broadcast they announced that Cal Berkley, the 2007 National Champions, have recorded the highest point differential in the nation. The second best point differential in America belongs to Kutztown University.
It is now in the record books, and the point differential along with the number ten national ranking , gives us the most successful year in Golden Bear history.
Congratulations to everyone involved in Kutztown Rugby, from the players, to the alumni and the fans, you have created the chemistry and the magic that we all know and love , as Kutztown Rugby.
Now we have the MARFU Premier League , looming in the not too distant future. This League consists of seven teams, five of which held a spot in the nation's top ten, at one time or another in the last season. The Golden Bears will be traveling to Virginia Tech, Maryland and Penn State and will be hosting Virginia , Navy and Delaware. The schedule allows for four "bye" weeks, which other teams will occupy. As soon as the 2007-08 schedule is complete, it will be posted in this column. I look forward to the new rugby season with great anticipation , as Kutztown Rugby continues to raise the bar of excellence.

Coach Jones Maryland Match Story
Submitted by head coach Gregg Jones
On a sunny afternoon near the nation's capital, the Golden Bears of Kutztown University took on MARFU rival, University of Maryland. Kutztown which fields a young starting lineup with only two seniors on the roster, faced a Maryland side absent of any seniors. As the Terrapin coaching staff has opted to play the remainder of the spring campaign with the players that will represent them in the fall. The result was disasterous for Maryland , as Kutztown ran over fifteen tries and ten conversions on way to a 97 - 5 demolition of their hosts. There were four Golden Bears with multiple scores as winger Mike MacNallen led the way with a hat trick, Outside center Marco Barnard , flyhalf, Nick Recine , and # 8 man , Cory Collins, each had two tries. Since their heartbreaking 34-26 lose in the MARFU quaterfinal to Navy, Kutztown has defeated the Brandywine Men's Club, Delaware, Navy, Towson and Maryland in succesive weekends. Next week , Kutztown will put a cap on the spring season, as they entertain East Stroudburg University, during the Golden Bear's rugby alumni weekend.

Towson Post Game Report
Submitted by Head Coach Dr. Gregg Jones
On Saturday afternoon, Kutztown University defeated a determined Towson University side, 40 -3 . Towson had plenty of firepower up front, as the Tiger forwards played the first half as well as any pack the Golden Bears had seen all season. Kutztown's freshman hooker Chris Pettine ran hard , as he scored two tries within the first twenty minutes and the Bears held off several threats by the driving Towson forwards throughout the first stanza. The halfway mark found Kutztown on top 14-3. Early in the second half , the Golden Bears used their possession well and winger Kyle Travelett broke off a long run before off-loading to # 8 Cory Collins for his first of two tries ,that turned the momentum in Kutztown's favor. The Kutztown backline was clicking. Outsidecenter, Marco Barnard had an exceptionally strong game, with several long breakaways and inside center Marco Cardillo, along with winger Jason Zinc, found the end zone. The Golden Bears crossed the line for six tries and fullback Ewan Maisey continued to find the mark , as he hit on five out of six conversions and ten points on the day.
